~ ~ ~ Last Thoughts Of A Samurai~ ~ ~
The cold winter breeze blowing through my body, the same red sun arising.
The deafening silence before the fight. The familiar chilling of my spin.
The same questions echoing in through my head.
“What does it mean to be samurai?” To die without fear? To embrace death? Or to give one’s life for the fight?
These painful words pierce my heart driving me to the point of insanity.
To think a simple blade of steel is what my life revolves around, oh how I envy the Poor’s easy life.
The blossoms fall like rain, like the blood of a fell enemy, a fate I too shall share.
Is the point of my life to end? Or to cheat death?
The pain of this life rivals that of the watchful gods. How long can I last before I too am cut down by the very weapon I hold?
I close my eyes, feeling the same breeze pass again, feel the warmth of the same rising sun bearing to color of what I now must spill.
I hear the familiar song of the sword being drawn. Perhaps in death I will no longer be plagued by the questions.
Is Honor and glory really worth a life? Are these the thoughts of a Coward or Traitor? Or do we all face them?
As I stand the sun and breeze greets me once more. I hear the singing of many blades. The calm passed the fires of battle set. The ending of a life or one’s own life. Thus is the life of a Samurai.

Really nice poem, I think you really captured the spirit. Only error I noticed was gramatical, you write "The embrace death?" which doesn't really make sense in the context. Did you mean to write 'The embrace of death?' or, 'To embrace death?'. Aside from that it's awesome though. Never stop writing!

Thanks alot and while reviewing my poems, which I do often I too noticed that error. I would have corrected it but no one had posted anything for about a week so I didn't bother. I will change that now. I have studied the samurai for some time and hope to go to Japan to pratice iado/iaijutsu in the moutains along with Lung Ying(Dragon style kung fu) and Tai Chi. It's nice to know my studies haven't been in vain.

It is a very nice poem, it seems to capture the thoughts of a young samurai.
As for picking arts to study, unless they are purely for enjoyment, why not add Mui Thai along the way, :P Or learn capoera, that will be useful on the dance floor, expecially if you never get to fight with it, multifunctional =D

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I invisioned a mid-age samurai more then young. I highly belive that they had those thoughts all through thier life just they chose to ignore them and not let these bothersum question effective thier life. No matter what theres always a question or issue you have faced thats still and always will poke at you. The challange is to learn to ignore it and live your life.

Well knowing a couple of hardend war vets myself, I've been told the initial wonder and awe of life and death lose meaning after only a few battles. For someone who risks his life on a repeatative basis, and takes life even more often, that way of life begins to become natural to him.
I had a friend at my last job who was an ExMarine in Veitnam, and a very active one like that. His favorite topic was grusome tourcher techniqes, and he would just laugh wile telling me about tying men to trees just so high off the ground, so hyennas would come and eat their legs off, but since hyeenas cant raise up on their hind legs, they could not get up and eat the rest of them, and they bleed to death. That is one of the "less" grusome stories.
Combat is a bit more chivalrous when it is done point blank with melee combat, but in the end, a few battles will wash away guilt and fear, the warrior either quits carring about life, or is so confident in his skill that he doesn't think he will die. That's my perspective.
