Guildwars POSTER !! wip
The ranger i painted, i decided to add a lot of textures, aswell as give it a grungy type feel and print it large as a poster, there are still a few minor adjustments i am going to make to it before i print the poster. Also need to come up with a good name, slogan, saying etc to put on the black area at the bottom. This is the small version, it will be about A3-A2 when printed
P.S - when i make all the minor touch ups ill repost it. I know the white border is a little skew

I'm assuming this isn't supposed to be like this, but here's something that's been bugging me since I first saw this, never got around to saying it until now. His proportions are pretty wrong. He looks much more like a munchkin than he does a normal sized ranger from the game. His head is too large, his arms are quite a fair bit too short.
When it comes to height of a character, your average person is going to be about 8 heads tall (technically a little bit more). If you do an outline of your character, you'll come up at about 5 and a half heads. The arms should be about a little shorter than 4 heads in length from shoulder down to hand. Yours are a little over two.
If you take a screenshot of an in-game ranger standing straight, outline his head and line up copies of that outline, you'll come up to 8 heads tall. Your guy, being 5 1/2 (if you're being generous on the feet), is clearly quite squished when it comes to limbs, especially. A "small person", is what he looks like.
...if he's SUPPOSED to be like that for whatever reason and I missed it. Ignore this entire post and give me a break 'cause it's 5:45am over here.

hehe. Yeah i know the proportions are off, thanks for the insight though. I have been told that by a few including my art teacher
Though it wasnt meant to be a realistic character in terms of proportions Even the models in guildwars are very out of proportion. stand with your arms aside from your sides like he is standing and you will see his hands come down to the right place, though it is his lower body which is a bit too small, aswell as his hands being roughly 2/3 their normal size. From his stomach downwards is our of proportion and if one analyses his hight, yes he is too short due to this. His upper body seems right though, and in proportion to his shoulders and chest, his head isnt too big at all, its actually quite righ.
Thanks for your post though, a lot of the things you mentioned i didnt know. I normally just paint portaits and dont know much about the human anatomy as a whole Thanks again

You're right about his head size in relation to his torso, I was referring to the size of his head compared to his body size as a whole. But yeah, if you chopped off everything from his pelvis down, and his arms, and left him as "Torso/head man" then his head would be in correct proportion to what you had left.
As a whole it's not too bad though, I like the feel of it. Something else that you might want to watch is your shading. It doesn't really feel like it has a good light source, like a 3D guy. It feels like a painting...if that makes sense. Not in that it looks 2D, but it doesn't look like he's really THERE in the enviornment due to his awkward shadowing. Something I MIGHT be right on is that the shadows in several places look too dark, be very careful when it comes to dark shadows---black is not a good thing, and if you're using the burn tool, be careful not to overdo it in spots. Right now you can't really find a lightsource. Something I'm learning to work with is putting down a base color inside an outline, and then taking a highlight and a shadow color (never using black), then slowly adding inbetween shades. I assume this is common, and it's helping me personally to figure out lighting a lot easier.

Well the general atmosphere of the piece is dark. It doesnt have a strong light source, though the dim light that there is hits in straight on. I hardly use the burn tool at all, the only time i used it emphasising some cracks and some minor touch ups. The colour is all real colour. I ahve to disagree saying black isnt good. I usually to traditional oil painting, and in all of my paintings, they consist mainly of black. Ill try getting a photo of some to show you Light and dark is actually waht inspires me to paint, not really the subject matter to be honest
And the reason as to why it feels like a painting is because it is a painting.... :P

This is actually pretty cool, almost looks exactly the same as the model. Here's my crits though, in a very sloppy mouse drawover.
Mainly its fixing the anatomy problems he's suffering from, and secondly its the lack of a distinguishing difference between his armour and the BG. The background is blending into him basically, it needs to be pushed further back, so i did it very quickly and crudely. Anyways, hope this helps =)

Well it was just gaussianblur + desaturate, but of course i was only trying to show you an example of how to keep your background and character seperate, not how it should look. As i said it was just a quick hack job, i don't have time to redraw your background to show an example =P
Jus' trying to help.
