Thunder crackled overhead as the figure rode across the Canthan island, hoof beats echoing from the canyon walls. The mountains around the rider seemed forboding, flashing images of his pursuers against the rock faces as Lighting lit his surroundings.
He urged his horse faster, his charge wiggled on the saddle in front of him, rolling over in his sleep. Lights appeared in the distance, his destination, the Shing Jea Monastery. He knew that if the men chasing him caught up, the child would be killed, and he would have failed, he could, and would not let that happen.
An arrow whipped past his ear, black feathers tickling his cheek. He ducked to shield the baby as more were fired at him. One arrow found its mark, and slammed into his right shoulder, sending a wave of agony through him. He ignored the pain and rode on, he must reach the Monastery.
The dull thud of hoof on rock turned to the splash of wet grass. The rider noticed that his pursuers had left him, maybe he would escape this encounter alive aswell.
Pain rippled through his soaked body as he felt a dagger pierce his ribcage and collapsed his lung. Dropping the child he fell from the saddle to the wet ground, he jumped to his feet with amazing agility and ran to the child who lay on the ground unmoving, silent.
The assassin wiped his blade on his cloak as he walked closer to the man he was hired to kill, jumping the horse was easy, he mused the idea he was overpaid for a job like this. Instictivly he spotted the many places he could stab to make the kill, but he held his dagger still.
Still crouched over the child, the rider pressed his palm onto the child's chest, saying a few words in the incantation of life. His hand felt the dim beat of a pulse, he was overjoyed. Standing, he turned to face his attacker. The man was scrawny, but he could sense a power about him, he knew was not natural. His eyes moved to the man's forehead where he spotted the insignia, the double dagger, the sign of death, no hunted man saw it and lived.
"Your getting old Maru," The assassin said as he stopped to look at the middle aged man infront of him, "I was told you had aged since I last saw you, but I never figured this much."
"Your words mean nothing to me whelp," The rider called Maru said as he grasped his sword, "But, I'll not give you the honour of slaying me." The rider pulled his blade from its sheath and plunged it into his stomach, kneeling to the ground he spoke the last few words of an incantation, hiding the child from the Assassin.
Angered the assassin stabbed the corpse of the rider in barely controlled rage, "Damn you to the mists Maru, I'll find the boy eventually," He laughed, "And when I do, I'll slay him, just so he can Join you!" The man cackled into the wind, as Lightning flashed again.
