Tell me if you like it, a poem I wrote for my friends bday
A Friend of Mine A friend is a fork when your in need of a hot meal A friend is the soft grass when its on one knee that you kneel A friend is the bed on which you will lie A friend is the tissue when you feel the need to cry A friend is forever present, forever near A friend is the sun when it’s the darkness you fear A friend is the flame so that your dinner will roast A friend is the one that will love you the most A friend is the moon in the deep blue sky A friend will hold your hand when it’s your time to die |

Spirit,
It's somewhat food oriented, fork, cooking fire etc... And, I suppose with birthdays, references to death aren't too unexpected.  Maybe rework it a little, use different concepts and don't get "stuck" in the "food rut", maybe even try for humor. A friend doesn't bail you out of jail A friend is sitting with you in jail... Or some such.
