oh btw, if anyone needs a strangely addictive song to work to; banana phone. Other than european trance (which espy got me back on), I like to work to really strange but upbeat songs like that. XD

Oookie, here are 2 close-up renders of the rit's skin.
It would take too long to render the full figure right now, so these will have to do.

EDIT: I still have some tinkering to do with the surfaces settings, but it's getting close.

LOL. My gym teacher used to sing that in jr. high.

Minami, that is really cool.

Wait, I know I've seen that before. Taurus/Tenderwolf already entered that last year. http://guildwarsguru.com/forum/showp...2&postcount=30

@ Tzu: I think Style 3 looks the most Nordic, I'd definitely go with that.

@Minami: o.0 - To be frank, that is probably one of the most astounding things I've seen, the detail is incredible. So you're using pre-made models and then modifying them with GW appropriate clothing and tweaks to make them look more like your character? I think I've seen your Rit on the internet somewhere, I just can't remember where. I wish I could work with stuff like that.

@ Charlie: I suppose my question would have been better phrased as whether it was computer generated (I.E. photoshop/illustrator) or handdrawn. Either way it's impressive, but as a hand drawing it certainly has a lot more character.

@Widow, go for it, I decided not to go with that :P

@Minami, the render looks awesome Are you using a DAZ model?

@Tzu, I hate that song :<

@Operative, I can't let that comment pass :P Do you mean it wouldn't be as awesome if he did it digitally? I can honestly say, doing it either way would take a heck of a lot of work to achieve all the textures and values. I do have a problem with people thinking that digital takes less work or something :\ For example, like hoodie's stuff, he spends an upward of 120hours on each piece x_x. It's a different medium, but I don't really feel like it loses any character; different perhaps, but not less.

Sorry if I misunderstood you btw, just wanted to get that out there

@Thread,
I got a quick sketch done of my idea for the Halloween submissions. I'm still fiddling around with the composition and idea, so any suggestions would be awesome

In case my sketches are too messy and no one can tell what it is:
I kind of wanted to draw something that ties into GW2, as we are nearing that time. So I wanted to illustrate the dragon, uhm Zhaitan if I remember right? towering over a devastated lion's arch on Halloween Eve, and Mad King Thorn, "king of kryta," swooping in on a Dragon Lich to save the day.

I think I may add some mad king's guards riding smaller bone dragons or maybe even incubi swarming around the massive dragon in the background.

Things in particular that I am worrying about:
I'm mainly concerned that this might not be "Halloween-y" enough. It certainly doesn't give off a trick-or-treat kind of feeling :P The mood might feel a bit too desperate or tense, instead of good old Halloween cheer. If anyone has any ideas for this, it'd be greatly appreciated :P

The concept looks nice as is. I think the inclusion of anything else might make it become too busy. As far as concept goes, a unique concept not associated directly to Halloween would be refreshing and a nice change. Go for it.

i think ur concept is pretty strong and well worth the interest blue.... i cant wait to see it happen. just a matter of adding drama to the perspective but thats easily adjusted at a later stage.

Certainly not. If you'll look at my entry (in another topic) it's a digital painting that I spent many weeks perfecting to get just the right look. What I guess I was commenting on are the folds of the paper, the scuffs of of the eraser marks, and the shading of the charcoal/pencil.

I don't think digital painting takes any less work (god knows just how much time and effort I've spent desperately trying to make my own pieces look good). Just that hand drawn pieces on real paper have more character than digital paintings in the same way that, for instance, a recording on a record has more character than on a CD. A record has warmth and a depth to it, while a CD is crisper, clearer, and closer to the original form. Each is good in its own right, just that the record has more character, whereas the CD has clarity.

As you said, a digital painting doesn't lose character because it's digital, it just simply has a different 'character'.

I love your concept by the way, I can't wait to see it fleshed out (twas a deliberate pun at your Bone Dragon BTW).

Blue:
Thanks ^_^ Yepp, I use DAZ models. I'm actually a published artist at DAZ3D, selling dynamic furs for Carrara.

Tzu:
I'd go with #3 for the hair too.

Operative 13:
Thank you Yes, I use V4 from DAZ3D as my female model for instance, and I spin dials (lots of dials lol) in the 3D program I use to morph the model to look the way I want it. As for the clothes, it's also an existing model, and I modify it/morph it to be appropriate for what I'm doing. Modeling something from ground up takes such a long time, and I don't have that much free time on my hands. ^_^ Yeah I made another Rit picture a while ago, might've been what you saw.

Kiya:
Thanks ^_^

I pretty much specialize in traditional pen and paper work. The entire drawing was just done with a mechanical pencil and ruler. Honestly, I don't have that much experience with CG - something that I'm interested in learning soon. Whatever graphic and 3D modeling work I know comes from modding I did for Counterstrike 1.6 a while back for another website.

@Minami: That render looks awesome. Looks just like real skin.

@Blue: I like the concept. To be honest, I think it has a sort of Halloween feel to it. If anything, you're idea makes me feel like my piece isn't Halloweeny enough

@Charlie, Man Charlie... Mechanical pencil... XD I'd NEVER have the patience for that hehe.

@ Operative, Ah okay. Just wanted to make sure, because I'm getting a bit tired of people who think doing digital is any easier than traditional :P. Personally I am more comfortable with oils better than digital, but I can never get the motivation to actually take them out because I know there is a loooooong clean up after I'm finished

@ Minami, I think you confused me with hoodie o_O

well, I think we should try to stick to the official rules for entries even in this thread, so I'm gonna have to disqualify Taurus' entry. Thanks for bringing that to light Kiya. Her pictures will be moved to "useful links" etc so people can still see it if they want.

LOL I'm starting to feel like I'm posting too many WIP pictures
I should post with longer time between progresses. :P

But since I saved these renders already, I'll post them. The head cover and necklace is pretty much done now, might still tinker with the surface settings but I'm satisfied for now. Here's a close up picture of the head gear, and the full figure with the skin texture and headgear/necklace texture added.

By the way I know her necklace is sticking through her skin, I will fix that later with some morphs.

That is really impressive.

DAZ is such a pain to work with, I gave up on it a couple of years ago

looking good Minami!

....And because I suck, I forgot to mention that we have another Award!

Thanks to Revelations we have a Pure Evil Award, worth 100k and an Aatxe Minipet!

Quote:
The Pure Evil Award goes to the artist with the most evil-looking and -feeling piece. Keep in mind that you still need to stick to the rules of the Official Contest and GWG, and that evil/cruel doesn't nescessarily mean "goriest".

Pure Evil - [100k + Aatxe Minipet] (donator(s): Revelations)

I'd also like to ask all donators, participants, and eager watchers of this thread:

Are you willing to participate as a Judge for 1 or more Awards?

- By becoming a Judge you also forfeit your chances to win the Award you judge entries for.
I will be a Judge for all Awards, and a couple of guildies will help me out.

- I don't *need* more judges, but if you want to have your say, I'd be more than happy to have you join the panel.
The more the merrier + more unbiased and fair judging!

- I'm going to be conducting the judging of entries via msn over the course of >1 week,
so please give me your msn if you want to be a judge, and if I don't already have it.
:P

I am officially going to drop from entering, as there is just simply no way I'll have the time to be able to do so (nor the money to do what I wanted).

However, I would like to judge! And I'm dubbing myself the Official Workshop Cheerleader

update again!

Verene has made a donation and another award has been added!
Verene is now also a part of the Judges.

Quote:
The Most Amusing Award goes to the artist with the funniest entry.
An entry which catches the judges' attention and makes us giggle.

Most Amusing - [25k] (donator(s): Verene)

And just for the record, I'm very easily amused, so yeah Thought that would be a fun category. The prize on it might increase but that depends on if I actually have time to play inside the next few weeks >.>
