Ooh, fun. More incentive for me to actually compete, since I'm not too interested in whatever bits of hardware they decide to offer this year (I happen to like my mouse, kthx). Unless they are offering a GW2 art book in which case I am SUPAR EXCITED, lol.
So yeah, if I'm not uber busy I might make an entry (unless as a semi-established artist here I am defeating the purpose of motivating new people...?). 1 school thingy down, 2 more and one other contest entry to go before I can start!
YSJ, note that this would delay your commish. :|

First time posting on this board, and just came across this thread. I guess I'll take a stab at this contest for fun.
Just a rough sketch I made during one of my lectures early this morning because I was trying to stay awake. I'll start a new piece and final render when I have the time. So, I guess this is just a preliminary sketch, yeah?
EDIT: Went ahead and removed the link until further notice.

I might consider joining IF I can find some time, going away for the weekend. I'll do my best to draw something nice, but don't expect competition, probably it will be just for the laughter :P And I could give some critics!

Well, one of the goals of this thread is to make people enjoy the process of making art as much as leaning back and watching their final product in relief.
I think I'll be adding a few more categories to the Guru Halloween Awards, and make each prize a little less valuable in turn. I think it would be more fun for all of us to have several winners, instead of just a few (which in turn leads to heated debate about whether they deserved their awards, etc). Who knows, maybe everyone will walk away with a prize in the end? ^.^
[b]If you have a suggestion for an Award, please speak up![/ b]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
@ KiyaKoreena: That sounds mighty interesting already! Can't wait to see what you come up with. :3
@ Taurus ChicKa: Well, there's a wide range of categories for you to attempt! ^.^ If you still don't feel like it, you'll be valuable as a critic and commenter!
@ Qing Guang: haha, a GW2 artbook would be a great inspiration indeed. XD I hope to see you enter, I think you could be tough competition for the best progress award, in particular, you seem to handle critique quite well.
@ Charlie Dayman: Nice to see new faces, I hope you'll stick around! looking forward to seeing your work!
@ Hailfall: that's very kind of you! Thanks in advance! ^.^ It would be nice to see you enter the Guru contest even so, but it's your choice.
@ Crucist Ovv: That's the spirit! :3 And you still have something like a month before the deadline, so no worries. ^.^
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll be noting down preliminary ideas starting today, so if you've got something planned, tell me and I'll write it down on p1!
Otherwise, let's start discussing what's on our mind and help each other to come up with an awesome concept/idea!
I'll start, I guess. I've got 2 ideas in mind, both which I've sort of halfway finished already. I'll be playing around with costumes this year, not illustration.
1.) I've started putting together a Sylvari costume based on the first concept art released to the public. It goes nicely with the autumn colours of the forest (if winter doesn't catch up before I get to take some photos, haha XD), and with the costume I had this idea of a transformation tonic. That might be overdoing it though?
2.) I've got a Deldrimor Jora in the making, with a Charr Axe. It's not so halloween-themed as the Sylvari, in a way, but it's a costume! :P
Too shabby an excuse? XD

Well if we are all gonna share idea's, I do want trademark on it!
I had an idea to have a Sylvari (ofcourse a scarry halloween one), this race being able to have control over nature, summoning some living pumpkin plants (again, ofcourse the scarry halloween version) with them popping out of the ground everywhere.
Will be a drawning, and if someone is willing to teach me a coloured one/digital painting, but never really done that before.
Feel free to use it, if you like it But if you use it, it better be nice! ^^

I was thinking of doing a cute little picture based on an unfinished sketch of Gui in her Halloween costume I did last year.
She will be dressed as some kind of nekochan Loli thing (yup, she's pretty cheesy) and leaning over in a sort of half-curtsy to feed a lollipop to her mini devourer (she will of course be nomming on candy as well). I'm thinking of having a couple of characters in the BG pondering why a hyper sugar freak ever decided to be a necro, but I haven't decided who to use (will depend on costume, really). Am thinking Jenna and Ebia.

Thanks for the welcome
I'm really impatient, and don't like to wait on things. So I'll just go ahead and post the the idea I've got in my head right now. At the moment, I'm thinking I'll just do a full drawing of my character. I'll make it a mixture of the following two drawings I made:
http://cubeupload.com/files/3bc600gw.jpg
http://cubeupload.com/files/6c7c00test.jpg
The first was just a boring sketch I made yesterday morning in one of my lectures so I wouldn't fall asleep. It's pretty stylized, though I like the shading on it. With that, I'll mix it into the woodblock print style of the second piece I did last year around the same time.
Overall, it'll be a cross between stylized realism and ukiyo-e prints. Seems like a good idea in my head. Though I think I'm lacking the "Halloween" theme of it. If so, would putting my char in alternate armor count as a Halloween costume?
Anyways, good luck to everybody entering the contest. Sounds like a lot of fun!

Share ideas?
All right, here goes.
I'd like to bring Margo-Eryn to life via TexMod. Creepy? Yes. Pumpkins? No. I come from a cultural background where Halloween is as good as nonexistant, so I'll just stick with something generally dark and sinister ,
I'll def need some feedback on this at some point

- Noted down people's names and ideas in first post, please tell me if I overlooked yours, or if you don't want yours made official!
- Added 1 more Award Category, currently named "Most Pumpkiny", check out p1 for details.
KiyaKoreena, do you approve of the description I gave?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
@ Crucist Ovv: That's an incredibly cool idea, I think you should go for it! We're all here to help each other out, I'll start putting up a few painting tutorials a.s.a.p (10-15 mins maybe) so people can get experimenting!
@ Qing Guang: That's both cute and funny XD I love it.
@ KiyaKoreena: Thanks so much! ^.^ Your award has been added, and I hope you think the description I gave was okay?
@ Charlie Dayman: That's an incredibly cool style you've got there! O.O Very original. Your character already counts for the Guild Wars element, but yes, I think you should redesign the armor/make him change into something more halloween-y, or just make a bg which includes obvious halloween elements.
@ Morag D: @.@ That would be so much fun to see. I have no idea how Tex-Mod render-editing works, but it's probably hard >.<' Can't wait to see some progress posted though! ^.^
@ the last posts: XDDD arenanet decided to make some seriously cool prizes this year. Way better than the adder and graphics card. It's even signed! *glee* X3
Whoever wins, if you're a guru member, you better post a victory-pic of you holding the book in this thread! XD

Sounds good :-)
Well, with only 20 official prize spots available my confidence in winning something went down into the sewers. As soon as my glue gun heats up and I can fix the part I just accidentally knocked off I'll post a pic of some of what I've done so far.
Edit: Here's the first part of my project. He's a bit pudgy and Im not totally happy with the nose. I'm not sure if I should use the teeth, take them out, or try making new ones.

Tutorials of several categories have been added to the first post!
Oh my goodness, Kiya, that's a masterpiece already! XD
I think he should have teeth, but I'm not entirely sure about the ones he has now. Will you be adding a row to his upper jaw too? The thing with the teeth now, in my opinion, is that they look fairly flat. With all those lovely curves on the rest of him, it stands out a bit. I'm not sure if the mouth is curved, but either way I think the row of teeth should be, a little bit at least. You could also make the row shorter.
More space between and more detail to the teeth would make for a more sinister and less cute look, I'm not sure which you'd prefer.
Looks like he can move around too, can he?
lol, I feel like a kid now, I wanna play with him!! XD
EDIT: adding your updated details to first post. Congrats on being the first person to post progress!!
EDIT AGAIN: I just figured, weathering his clothes with tea, bleach, stone, ink or the likes (whichever effect you're looking for) could make his skin look soft in contrast, and give him a more lifelike feel.
