asdfsdjsd that's so damn cute <3__<3

I agree with the comment about having it a bit more green. It's more of the color of poison vs the color of a rit spirit.

The placement of the figures is not right, gotta drag the layers to the right place, but otherwise it's shaping up nicely ^_^

Hope you like it

XD that's pretty awesome. Grenth needs a more "wut" expression tho. I suggest this: ಠ__ಠ

(if you can't see that, click here)

Anyways, this'll be Blue's CnC corner part 1, guest starting Chimney! (because it looks the most complete right now :P)

We will be looking at her digital painting here:

The first thing that pops out at me is the three point perspective along with the slanted horizon. I personally think it adds a lot of depth to the piece. However there are a lot of ways you can follow up in painting the piece to realize the potential of depth the composition has.

The body of the ranger could be slightly slanted more to the left to follow the contours of the pillars and the perspective. Her face looks rather blocky right now, perhaps one of the references Tzu sent could help you out? Also, perhaps try fading the upper body and head into the back ground slightly for some atmospheric perspective.

Most of the perspective is right on, but there are a few glaring errors that detract from the cohesiveness of the piece. First, the pillars in the background do not share a common vanishing point, even though they should be theoretically parallel. I recommend drawing some lines following the sides of the pillars and taking a look for yourself where the vanishing points lie.

Also, the bow looks very awkward right now, the way she is holding the handle and the arrow makes her look as if she is holding her bow a foot away from her and rather parallel to her torso. I would lower her arms a bit, and make the plane of the bow flatter towards the viewer.

Something you might want to consider is toning down some of the bright whites you have in the piece. Highlights are fun, but as Tzu has demonstrated time and time again, it's really easy to overuse them. If you reserve a few really bright white spots like on the head of the arrow and on the leather of the leg facing us, you can really make the picture pop.

Lastly, think carefully about color saturation in your piece. In a cool environment like a snowy day, the farther away something is from us, the cooler the colors look. Right now, the red on the wreath and the red on her bustier and the red on the grench's hat look exactly the same. Some variation with the colors closer to use being more saturated could do you a lot of good. Right now, the focus is sort of split between the figure, the really saturated present, and the glowing eyes of the grench. Think about what you would like to focus on, and plan accordingly.

I know I focused on a lot of negative aspects, but I do like the piece, and I just hope you can work a bit more on it to make it awesome.

Thanks very much for the feedback guys! So happy you all like my pic ^_^ Also, huge thanks for all the ideas!!
I will work on the scythe color and background during the night, and try and see if I can make Grenth's eyes go like Blue suggested.

EDIT:
Blue, I don't really understand the eyes you meant for Grenth... I tried it but it didn't look right somehow.

I tried drawing a bg here, some blue for snow, huge snowflakes, and xmas lightbulbs

Looks kinda festive, doesn't it?

Blue.. thanks so much for the quality crit. That is wonderful feedback and a good example of the kind of constructive criticism I think can help me improve. Thanks again so very much. I may have some followup questions but I'll pm you if I think of any so you won't have to scan the forum post.

Alright, I think I'll make this the first GW contest I'm entering!

Name: Dzjudz
Idea: Dwayna vs Grenth polar bear comic
Genre: Illustration

I made an account on Verene's site under my guru name Dzjudz.

I'm using Photoshop CS4 and a mouse to draw my comic. I'm a lousy artist and I don't have any experience. My inspiration comes from last year's comic winner. I thought it'd be fun to have another comic, but this time showing Dwayna getting a mini polar bear .

I already made a very crude drawing of what I thought of (click for full size):

Essentially, the idea is this. Dwayna and Grenth both got through dungeons to a final room with a mini polar bear under glass on a stand. Grenth seems to be winning the race, but Dwayna sends her pet rabbit to attack him. The rabbit transforms into a Vaettir (like Nulfastu Earthbound) and casts Clumsiness on Grenth. He trips and Dwayna gets the mini polar bear!

Any input is valued, thanks .

I guess I would start with the foundation which is your story. This could maybe use a greater flavor of irony. I think last year's winner that you pointed out did as well as it did because we were all surprised in the second frame that a big bad guy like Grenth would have such an obsession over his cute little polar bear. Now that this surprise has been revealed it is hard to capitalize on it so you have to think of another one. Maybe Dwayna only wants the polar bear because she likes to cook it over a skewer which would seem uncharacteristic for Dwayna but almost plausible. Okay, bad example (sorry Peta!). But hopefully you are following my drift.

I'd have to agree with Chyminy.
Also, your story seemed a bit too complex to be squeezed into 4 frames.
The winner comic you mentioned had a very simple base story, but it was executed perfectly with the dialogue and the expressions, not with actions.

I would try and go with a different, more unique idea.

I hope this is the scetch.. right? Not to be mean but... I couldn't figure at all what was happening in it Maybe you could use the space to make slightly more detail. Or stop mocking this workshop. I have no idea if you're serious or not.

These are funny "stick" figures.

@Gemini: As I said, even with a bolded 'very', it was just a crude sketch of my idea. I'm not mocking the workshop, otherwise I wouldn't have put in the effort and signed up with name, idea, genre and made an account on Venere's site. Also, I don't think the story is too difficult to follow with the description I gave under it. The description states exactly what is going on.

Alright, on to the serious critics.

@Chyminy: thanks for the outside input on the story. I thought bringing in the rabbit would be a funny addition. I agree that I could put in a more well-rounded story with irony. However, as I said, I'm only drawing inspiration from last year's comic. I'm not trying to do the same ironic twist but then with Dwayna. I'm trying to build a new story on the Dwayna vs Grenth struggle to get the mini polar bear.

@Minami: Yeah, I'm thinking of adding more frames to the story, making it a whole comic book page so to speak (around 8 frames). I'm indeed trying to make more of an action story than an expression story, as you rightly picked up. I'll think a bit more about the exact story. This just popped into my head today, there's plenty of time to change anything.

@Dzjudz: Well, some people have way too much time on their hands, but since it is indeed a crude sketch, good luck with the finished result.

@Dzjudz I don't think it seems right for Dwayna to resort to such tricks. Also having the rabbit morph to a vaettir seems like an awkward unneeded step. If you are doing a story where Dwayna will turn out to be the winner of the bear I would think it should be by more virtuous means, like this time Grenth did something to trip himself up.

You guys convinced me. I'm doing away with the whole story. I already have a new idea in my mind. It's darker and in favour of Grenth . I'll post another (crude ) sketch later. It still involves rabbits .

That is really awesome! I've never sculpted before so I'm curious what materials and tools are involved. Are you working towards a particular scale?

I've been "studdying" minami's entry and I must say I really like the colouring work. I probably could give some crits on composition and the BG, but I think it's kinda fine, I'm just picky with good pics to get them better.

I do think you should work some more on Dwana's hair, with the colouring. I think it would do a lot to the pic's bigger picture.

I think Grenth is the best artwork I've seen you make, I mean it in all the best ways..!

@ Evangelin: Nice! Sculpture! What is it made of? Are you going to paint it?

@ Gemini: Thanks I wasn't sure about the background, just been waiting for some feedback on it because I'm stumped.
I'm rather proud of my Grenth myself Turned out a lot better than I had originally hoped for. ^_^
