The Tourist's Figure Draw'n'Crit
Well, normally I would have set up another commission thread but my PC has been.... lets just say incapacitated, so I'm stuck on a Mac until I get my new laptop. So I would've had to have done the commissions for free (and that's just way too much work ._.) since I can't go on GWs.
But since I love drawing all your characters so much I figure I'll just draw random professions, armors, pets, etc. and give a little tutorial for the tough and sticky parts that goes along with figure/character drawing on each, such as 'how to fit armor properly on a figure,' 'muscles and movement' and of course, 'HANDS &&FEET' (I love drawing them >.<)
This way all you guru art [email protected] can get your fill on free GWs art and the artists can get some extra tips (as if most of you guys even need them ;))
Plus I, I like drawing GW characters and I enjoy your feedback >.>; [/lamesentiment]
Well I haven't done of these said "random character drawings" yet but I do have quite a few regular figure drawings in quite a few different poses.
(They were from a nude figure class so there are some naughty parts, but nothing terrible)
This is from a comic I kinda sorta started
Hand!
Pose: Laying Down
Pose: Laying Down 2
Pose: Leaning
Pose: Leaning 2
Pose: Sitting
Pose: Sitting 2
Pose: Leaning On 1 Arm
And here's my final from that class, a self portrait, just for the heck of it
(All of these, with the exception of the first one, are large charcoal drawings and anything I would put on here would be in pencil and have a lot more detail xP)
Hope you like my idea and enjoy the art :)

Oh wow I would love some tips. Especially on anatomy which I think is my weakest point atm >_<. I'd love to learn those topics you listed:
"'how to fit armor properly on a figure,' 'muscles and movement' and of course, 'HANDS &&FEET' "
Your drawings are amazing! Would you draw my chars too? lol

That last line is a slippery slope.
I should hope for some action poses.

Well since you mentioned it, I guess we'll start with muscles and movement:
The biology of it is really quite simple. If you want to show movement then the muscles that must flex to swing a weapon, run, jump, etc. must be fully tensed. If yyou want your character to look like he/she is running really fast, draw bulging thigh muscles and such. The only advice I can really give you to help with mastering anatomy is to study the human figure as much as possible (via nude studies), also I find looking at science-y pictures of human musculature and skeletal structure very helpful, here are some links:
http://images.cnblogs.com/cnblogs_co...atomyChart.jpg
http://www.zolimasszazs.hu/honlap%20...usculature.JPG
But, biology aside, here are some tips on how to make your art emphasize movement:
-Use thick lines!
-Use sharp angles and distorted edges (nothing too ridiculous of course, you want to be able to recognize the appendage)
-Utilize foreshortening (this is a big one, using this technique properly will give your figures so much more depth, which is critical for achieving the perception of movement.) Use thicker lines for the parts closest to you and for parts farther away, other than the main figure (torso/head), fade out
-When creating a high velocity thrusting movement (such as kicking, punching, sword slashes, etc) it helps to use a semi-circular line around the business end of what's being thrusted, this implies that the object is moving so violently that it appears as if the air around it being pushed out of the way is visible.
Fun fact: In an adrenaline rush, peripheral appendages (such as toes, feet, hands) that are not crucial to survival at the moment tend to be flailed around like a wet fish ;D
That's all for now, maybe some fun doodles of actual armored characters next time, ttfn

Very nice drawings. You do have a good way of drawing muscles on the characters and some very interesting poses.
Can't wait to see what you'll come up with once you get your new laptop.

*ahem* ok class, time for the next lesson (lawl)
HANDS!!!!11!one!!!1! :DD
Ok I know I know, hands are extremely frustrating because of all the bones, tendons, and ligaments. But once you get the feel for the anatomy you can draw them in almost any position C:
Some quick physiology facts about the hands: The pinky, forefinger, and thumb are all pretty much the exact same length; same goes for the middle and ring fingers (fig. 4);
Also, the distal end of the palm (where the fingers connect with the palm), IS NOT FLAT, it is an arch (fig. 1) this is the reason why all the fingers (excluding thumb) appear to be different in length. They are merely connected at different distances inward into the palm.
Drawing tips:
- Study your own hand!! (twist it, move it, flex it, and draw it so many times you think you're gonna die)
- There are A LOT of creases and folds on your hands. Try touching the tips of your fingers to your palm, this way you can get a feel for how the skin folds, creases, and moves around the bone structure
- There is a little bit of webbing between ALL of your fingers, not just your thumb and forefinger, so don't just connect the fingers with a little V shape, it's more of a squared off, distorted U shape (figs. 2 & 3)
- When drawing a fist, remember that the knuckle is not just a spherical shape, when you flex your hand from straight out to a fist you'll notice that your tendons settle in around the knuckle bone creating sort of a cube shape
All right, class dismissed, I'm tired -.-

Well, the art forum isn't as active as it was a year or so ago thanks to a lot of the old playerbase taking a break from the game or waiting for GW2, so a lot of things are quieter around here. Don't be discouraged if people don't post every day - sometimes a couple of days can pass before there's any new posts. Even the commission threads don't see the same kind of activity they used to.
If you want more attention... well, when GW2 rolls around, I'm sure their forum will see a lot of people posting their art or wanting commissions.
I enjoy reading your posts and that one about drawing hands was very helpful. Thank you. I still have trouble drawing hands even though I've been trying to get better at it for quite some time now.

It's a bit hollow, seeking attention through commissions. There are plenty of us who are watching, at worst, without posting.
Want to keep us engaged? Spew out works like it's nobody's business. We'll enjoy it, whether we post about it or not.

lol when GW2 comes out I'll probably be too busy playing it to care about doing commissions for a while. I might just do commissions or art trades now for fun anyway, it's more rewarding to draw something FOR someone than just posting random stuff.

It was also a holiday weekend in the US so not a lot of people are checking the forums at the time. I'll get on reading the tips you posted today.
Will let you know if I have questions or comments and stuff ^_^ Thanks!

I would be interested in an art trade. :3 Do you have examples of your finished work elsewhere? I really like the black and white sketches you've shown here though, so a black and white lineart would work too.
I'd be interested in getting my assassin drawn, will provide reference shots later when I can get on GW to take them.

but i'd be glad to make you a polished line drawing (: (i'll try and get this clunky old scanner to work too, so the quality is good.)
I dunno if I have any screens of my chars anymore but i can tell you what gear my sin has.
This armor, all black
Hair style: top right
Hair color: bottom middle
Guantlets

Here's my assassin, Tomie Pepper:
Thank you! Also, the link to the hair colour doesn't work, it shows the same one as the hair style? I can do a polished lineart for you as well. It'll be interesting to draw a male character, most of the commissions I get are female.

sorry lol, but yeah I usually draw male characters so this should be interesting for me too, do you have a favorite skill or something that I could maybe draw her doing, oh and what's her secondary prof?

Well, she's pretty much assassin through and through, doesn't really use stuff from a secondary profession. She was a ranger before though, but that's the only one she's ever used more than once.
I really don't mind how you draw her. An action pose of her attacking would be awesome, but her just walking and looking dangerous would be just as great. She really likes going into battle to deal lots of damage, and uses some spells such as Smoke Bomb Defence and Shadow Refuge to help stay alive.
Anything useful you can tell about your assassin? What does he like to do? Any secondary he uses a lot?
