Guide to Guild Wars Machinima
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYbbBgviGAI
(Does this forum have a way of embedding videos?)
So I have done it. I have made the very first extensive guide to creating Guild Wars Machinima.
Episode One is complete. It follows the various methods of recording your game footage.
In Episode two, I'm planning to cover editing softwares, and then in episode three and beyond, the actual ways of using Guild Wars as an engine, following the many steps (including things like camera movements, HUD, TexMod, etc.)
I'd really like some feedback from the Guild Wars community since most places I post this at get no replies, since no one makes Guild Wars Machinima.
Anyway, thanks for watching/reading.

One request.. can you post your system specs / requirements please cause theres no point in even trying this stuff if you have a suped up box thats using software the average pc cant handle.
thanks.

Well, it's kind of implied that you have to have a decent PC to do this stuff, not to mention the fact that most of the sites have a system requirements section for their software.
Average PCs can handle programs like Fraps and GameCam; it's just that, if your PC isn't quite up to par, you may have to lower the settings.
Also, I was a little unsure about your request. Were you wishing for me to post my specs in a future installment of this, or instead just in this thread.
Anyway, here are mine.
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - Studio 17 Dell Laptop
Intel Core i7 CPU - Q720 @ 1.60GHz
4GB of RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650
Hope that suffices.
What I can do is put my specs in the description of the part one video, then put an annotation somewhere at some point saying that they're in there for comparing purposes.
P.S. - Thanks for watching.

it depends on what you consider "decent".. you have an i7... thats untouchbale to those of us on a budget... as well as the HD 4650..
I have an AMD64 2.0ghz / 3200+ with a 512mb GeForce 8 PCIE with 2gb ram... thats probably closer to what most people are still running than what you have.. I would kill for what you have..
At best the average person has a dual=core.
Just something to keep in mind.
thanks.
I find that the video software will run on my system, but at a cost... it will lag pretty bad on some capture apps..

I wouldn't have gotten the i7 but I got a helluva deal on it. Not to mention the salesperson kept saying things like "In five years the i7 will be of the norm. Now, you're not going to want to have to upgrade your processor in five years, do you? Nah, you wanna be ahead of the game!". I can definitely understand about people being on a budget.... It just so happens that someone who must've been a direct descendant of Billy Mays (RIP) sold me my laptop...
Most people I've heard who make Machinima have beastly computers that make mine look like a cardboard box.
Then again, those were people who are mainly with Machinima.com, who probably bought their computer solely for Machinima.
I was lucky enough to get a nice deal that I honestly couldn't pass up for what I was getting.
Though thanks for watching/replying. The response from episode one has been pretty great; I'll try to get episode two out before September (editing episode one alone took about three weeks of just editing - not to mention recording, research, etc.).

I haven't heard from anyone how x-fire works compared to fraps. Anyone willing to shed some light if either are worse than the other?

You realise that a 4650 isn't that great.....and he is using a laptop, which is usually about only 75% as good as the "desktop equivelant". Not trying to flame but you make it sound like his computer is "the shit" when it IS an average laptop...just has a nice processor in it.
If you're using a f--king pentium 4 you should still be able to run this stuff. It's not like it requires 2 gigs of ram to run Frapps, come on.

Dr. Obvious.

I dont even have HD so its probably better than mine... .and any cap app ive used has lagged like heck now matter how much i tweak. Best ive found (for my system) is CamStudio (open source, free) but i still have issues with it. I was just pointing out that it should be noted how easy/hard it might be for any given system in general.

I've heard that they're quite comparable, however Fraps lags slightly less in the end.
My opinion is a tad biased since I've never used XFire, but I based my statement off of other peoples' testimonies.
You can find some good comparison videos here, though.
@Astral_Nomad - Camstudio wasn't really made for recording game footage, which is probably why it's not working well. It was more so made for web tutorials and things of that nature. I don't think it's really possible, no matter how high-end your PC is to make Camstudio record games well. I've used it before, and tested it in-game and found the results horrendous. Taksi was the worst program I mentioned in the video, and I found it to work better.
On Fraps you can set it to record half-size cips, which worked for me. I'm a bit of a person where lag in videos is a pet-peeve, so, even though the lag was minor, I set my settings a tad lower to eliminate it.

The HD 4650 is either average/sup-par at the moment mate. They are not too expensive either, here is one for $62.

Fraps doesn't work for me, it lags my games too much although xfire doesn't lag them as much.

It all has to do with certain peoples' computers, basically. I've never tried Fraps. I heard about it practically the day after I payed my $37 for Fraps.. lol
If anyone is concerned, I hope to (emphasis on "hope") to get some recording done for part two today, and if I'm lucky I'll get it all done.
Then I'll work on the editing in my spare time (which could take between a few days to three weeks or more - depends on how much work it takes, and also how much time I get).
