Exclamation Halloween Workshop '10 [Planning Stage]

hai gusy!1

I'll be setting up the Halloween Workshop this year as well, following the success of last year. On that note, thanks for all the interest so far, it's been really inspiring! We've still a couple months to go though, but I figure I better not make this a last-minute ordeal like I tend to do, because I want this workshop to pack a punch! It may very well be our last Halloween before GW2!

So, this is a heads up for everyone who wants to join - so you can start thinking about your project with plenty of time to spare - but also because I want to hear from you regarding the workshop itself. I have my plans, most of which will remain secret for now, but there's still plenty of room for new ideas and improvement. So, if you could please answer these questions I would be very much obliged!
Quote:

FYI: Halloween Workshop 2009

1.) When would you like the workshop to open? Keep in mind that the deadline for submitting your entry to the official art contest tends to be around the 20th of October.

2.) Which winner categories would you like to see? Do you have any favourites, or any new ideas to add? Do you think we have too many or too few categories?

3.) What kind of prizes would you prefer? Money, ectos, weps, consumables, commissions, etc.? Would you accept real-life rewards, such as an artbook or the Ghosts Of Ascalon book? I would be the one to handle the shipping.

4.) Do you think the workshop should be partially or completely based outside of Nolani, such as in a blog, deviantart or an imageboard? keep in mind that this would invite guild wars players and artists from every web-based community site, not just GWG.

5.) Do you think we should have separate art categories for different prizes, so that costumes, paintings, props, 3D, writing, photo-manipulations (the list goes on) are judged independently?

6.) Do you think we should reward "watchers" more than we already have (the "smileyface" award), so that even though you're not contributing as an artist, you should be rewarded for good critique and helpful comments?

7.) Would you like the workshop to be more interweaved with in-game Guild Wars than it has been? We only had a small party last time, should we do more than that?

8.) Would you want to be featured in a larger scale (podcasts, blogs, Guildmag) so that your art and/or progress becomes more public?

9.) Is there a category of art you are partial to, which you think is not represented properly in the guild wars art community? Would you want us to push this further into the light with the workshop?

10.) Do you want this workshop to be more related to GW2? Or not at all?

11.) Finally (for now ); WILL YOU BE PARTICIPATING IN THE HALLOWEEN WORKSHOP 2010?
Thanks in advance!

Good work Tzu! Definatly will participate :3 And to get your list answered:

1. 2 months before the deadline or something? Don't think it really matters. And the deadline could be about the same day/week as the official deadline.

2. Overall best, most scary/evil, best halloween spirit capture.

3. Commission from you D:< And one from Chaliepai <3 (only if I win though, otherwise I'll die of jealousness)

4. I would keep it on GWG with a note on the GuildWars website. I don't think everyone is as comfortable with dA as they are with gwg, at least I don't know every feature and all on dA yet. Besides, I think the still guildwarsplaying community is here, people on dA are most oftenly at a level of prefering real life rewards. Besides that I thought the progression thing we had last year for wintersday (everyone an account on some website to upload images) was a bit of a failure. Just posting your progress in here would suffice imo.

5. They are certainly hard to compare. Though.. last year we had like 2 writings, 1 screenshot cap and 1 costume (wintersday that is) so I think the animo for it is too small for special catagories.. So I don't really have a solution for that one And you probaly figured what I just mentioned already

6. No, I think the smiley face reward is more then enough (funnily enough I won it last time ). The reward that people get is the art that gets created by people, that they enjoy, at least I assume so, as they participate in the thread. So they get a reward already. Giving a prize would have people get the wrong intentions. I think the critique should come from a warm heart, not from a greedy one. However perhabs its nice to enlarge to amount of places for the artists (4-7 win something small aswell) as a reward for time spend on it.

7. I can't think of anyway to get it more "into" the game, except for some screencap event or something. The party was fun. Though there doesnt seem to be alot of animo at this specific moment for the Canthan Workshop, however, the Halloween Workshop should be a whole different case.

8. I really couldnt care less. As long as if they use it, they ask me first. Please no disclamer: If you enter this workshop you agree with your art being used in XX, or that sort of stuff.

9. I do digital stuff, guess thats well presented Maybe some more 3d real life stuff would be fun, aka sculptures and sort. Don't really care though.

10. I think that should be the choice of the person that enters, and him alone. I think it would be fun, but since we know little about gw2 you can't ask it from the artists. So if you have an idea, that would be nice, if you don't, you don't and its still nice. It should be left free imo.

11. Sure thing.

1) 2 months before deadline sounds good to me.

2) Most Delicious Looking Consumable!

3) Money, ecto, consumables, rarer minipets, commissions sounds neat. I would be willing to donate my extra Asura warrior print that I have.

4) I think it should be a GWG thing with notification in the community activities report.

5) Unless there are over 50 entries I don't think separate categories would be a good thing. If there are only a couple per category it seems more like an automatic win.

6) No, we want more people creating and not just watching.

7) I think last years little party was fine.

8) I have no objections to any of that.

9) I wouldn't want to try pushing more people into trying certain categories. I think everyone should go with the ones they feel most comfortable in. Though maybe a side contest of Most Delicious Looking GW Consumable.

10) People can do what they want so I wouldn't exclude GW2 but I think GW1 will still be most peoples focus. Though we are getting more videos and such that isn't the game we are all involved in yet.

11) Yep. Not sure what I could do that is better than a life size asura and golem though. Wait, Ive got an idea!

Here is my real honest attempt at contributing to this THREAD LULZ:

1.) When would you like the workshop to open? Keep in mind that the deadline for submitting your entry to the official art contest tends to be around the 20th of October.

OPEN STARTING NOW

2.) Which winner categories would you like to see? Do you have any favourites, or any new ideas to add? Do you think we have too many or too few categories?

NO OPINION. WE HAD ONE FOR MOST EPIC RIGHT? KEEP THAT ONE

3.) What kind of prizes would you prefer? Money, ectos, weps, consumables, commissions, etc.? Would you accept real-life rewards, such as an artbook or the Ghosts Of Ascalon book? I would be the one to handle the shipping.

COMMISSIONS!!! BUT HONESTLY ARTISTS ARE LIKE FKING CATS JUST DO ECTOS. REAL LIFE SOUNDS COOL BUT SRSLY WHO WANTS TO SPEND IRL MONEY.

4.) Do you think the workshop should be partially or completely based outside of Nolani, such as in a blog, deviantart or an imageboard? keep in mind that this would invite guild wars players and artists from every web-based community site, not just GWG.

IT WOULD BE COOL IF IT WERE OUTSIDE GWG BUT IT MIGHT GET OUT OF HAND

5.) Do you think we should have separate art categories for different prizes, so that costumes, paintings, props, 3D, writing, photo-manipulations (the list goes on) are judged independently?

oh god no

6.) Do you think we should reward "watchers" more than we already have (the "smileyface" award), so that even though you're not contributing as an artist, you should be rewarded for good critique and helpful comments?

no they're WATCHERS I can make nonsensical happy comments all day long I just don't do it because then I'd need to burn my frontal lobe out

7.) Would you like the workshop to be more interweaved with in-game Guild Wars than it has been? We only had a small party last time, should we do more than that?

Hmm. I think keeping attendance to only those interested is adequate.

8.) Would you want to be featured in a larger scale (podcasts, blogs, Guildmag) so that your art and/or progress becomes more public?

I think the artists definitely would.

9.) Is there a category of art you are partial to, which you think is not represented properly in the guild wars art community? Would you want us to push this further into the light with the workshop?

Nude interpretive dancing. Women only pls.

10.) Do you want this workshop to be more related to GW2? Or not at all?

GW2 is on every idiots mind. I say let GW2 be include, BUT IT HAS TO BE STUFF THAT HAS BEEN SHOWN not some dork's fairytale imagination of what GW2 might have.. please god not that. It's going to turn into furries.

11.) Finally (for now ); WILL YOU BE PARTICIPATING IN THE HALLOWEEN WORKSHOP 2010?

I answered this one

o.o...

Hijack complete, I think. Jee, even though I would prefer threads like this as clean as possible your violent incoherence really warms my heart (I'm all gooey inside now (turning into king slime etc, if you three dont know what Im talking about you're not really asian (wooo went there (teehee Paranthesis Paradise)))) D8
Anyway, to close that tangent off as much as possible, I'm not on msn because I'm still traveling - and I dont like smartphones, they give me the Big Brother Hibejeebies (mmm spelling and paranoid angst) Ill be back 26th/27th.

thanks for answering all the question sheets so far, its very helpful (perhaps with exception of the notorious art triad, but Ill take those in account as well). I thought the real life stuff would be more popular, I'd be paying for the shipping to wherever but remember I have quite a lot of gw stash myself which I really dont need (after gamescom I had 5 signed artbooks, but I managed to give 2 away, I also have 2 postcards signed by D.Dociu, a gw2/aion bag and two clapper fans - although I think the bag and fan arent exactly in perfect condition anymore >.>') so yeah.
Also, yep, I am still sort of rich. I have my consumable titles now, so Im currently looking into ways of getting rid of money I cant use. XD I may seem to have spent less than I can on the workshop last year, but theres also the wintersday (and this years' duo) one to take in account as well as other contests Im likely to do. :3

1.) When would you like the workshop to open? Keep in mind that the deadline for submitting your entry to the official art contest tends to be around the 20th of October.

At least a month in advance. The earlier the better.

2.) Which winner categories would you like to see? Do you have any favourites, or any new ideas to add? Do you think we have too many or too few categories?
They look good to me.

3.) What kind of prizes would you prefer? Money, ectos, weps, consumables, commissions, etc.? Would you accept real-life rewards, such as an artbook or the Ghosts Of Ascalon book? I would be the one to handle the shipping.
I prefer prizes that do not require the winner to divulge any personal information such as Address and Real Name

4.) Do you think the workshop should be partially or completely based outside of Nolani, such as in a blog, deviantart or an imageboard? keep in mind that this would invite guild wars players and artists from every web-based community site, not just GWG.
It all depends on how much the judges/organizers can handle.

5.) Do you think we should have separate art categories for different prizes, so that costumes, paintings, props, 3D, writing, photo-manipulations (the list goes on) are judged independently?
Yeah, I agree with this one. Only downside is that there could only be one entry for a certain category.

6.) Do you think we should reward "watchers" more than we already have (the "smileyface" award), so that even though you're not contributing as an artist, you should be rewarded for good critique and helpful comments?
yeah I like this award if it's not there yet.

7.) Would you like the workshop to be more interweaved with in-game Guild Wars than it has been? We only had a small party last time, should we do more than that?
I think one party should be fine? I am not against more though.

8.) Would you want to be featured in a larger scale (podcasts, blogs, Guildmag) so that your art and/or progress becomes more public?
I don't mind.

9.) Is there a category of art you are partial to, which you think is not represented properly in the guild wars art community? Would you want us to push this further into the light with the workshop?
Nope. (Illustration is my preferred art)

10.) Do you want this workshop to be more related to GW2? Or not at all?
Both GW/GW2 should give be fine IMO

11.) Finally (for now ); WILL YOU BE PARTICIPATING IN THE HALLOWEEN WORKSHOP 2010?
It depends on my workload but right now it's kind of a no (not to mention I am having an Art Block if it needs to start soon). I'd watch at the very least.

OMG I've missed this place. And you guys. I'm glad I decided to peek in here.

I'm too lazy to answer each question individually, so here. If we start the workshop two months before Halloween, that kinda means...now. Though I wouldn't be against that idea. Categories we had before were fine, I can't really think of anything new to add or really change. In-game prizes seem more popular, though I wouldn't say no to real life stuff (want an artbook damnit XD). Maybe make it an option?

I wouldn't mind attracting more people from other sites (I know there are GW comms/groups on livejournal and deviantart), but it might be easier to keep it hosted here or something. I don't think we should split things up that much, but maybe distinctions like writing, digital, traditional, and crafts could work. I like the smileyface award, but I may be biased, having won it last year :P I'm not really sure how to interweave it more into the game than we have, though I'd like to get more people to the parties. I wouldn't mind more exposure. Nothing I can think of as a category I like that's underrepresented. I think that if people want to do GW2-related art then they should be free to do so, just as if they want to stick with GW; so long as it's from the GW universe.

And I hope to participate! Considering I'm 0 for 3 on workshops so far >.> Yaaaaargh so busy.

...looks like I answered them all anyway. Oh well!

Well, first of all, hi everyone

It's gonna be a very super busy time for me the next few months, and seeing that GW/Anet judge people seem to hate both my 3D and chibi-style works, I'm not sure if I will enter.

However.

This workshop has been the most fun about GW contests, so I might reconsider.

Now, for Tzu's questionnaire:

1.) When would you like the workshop to open? Keep in mind that the deadline for submitting your entry to the official art contest tends to be around the 20th of October.
Right now.

2.) Which winner categories would you like to see? Do you have any favourites, or any new ideas to add? Do you think we have too many or too few categories?
Categories last year were really nice. I can't think of any new ones now, but I'll think about it.

3.) What kind of prizes would you prefer? Money, ectos, weps, consumables, commissions, etc.? Would you accept real-life rewards, such as an artbook or the Ghosts Of Ascalon book? I would be the one to handle the shipping.
Personally, I prefer either gold, ectos, or miniatures. Real life rewards are nice too, but I wouldn't want anyone having to spend their RL money on that.

4.) Do you think the workshop should be partially or completely based outside of Nolani, such as in a blog, deviantart or an imageboard? keep in mind that this would invite guild wars players and artists from every web-based community site, not just GWG.
I'd vote for the workshop to stay on GWG.

5.) Do you think we should have separate art categories for different prizes, so that costumes, paintings, props, 3D, writing, photo-manipulations (the list goes on) are judged independently?
As much as I'd like to be possibly the only one and hence first place in the 3D category ( ), I'd say nope.

6.) Do you think we should reward "watchers" more than we already have (the "smileyface" award), so that even though you're not contributing as an artist, you should be rewarded for good critique and helpful comments?
I liked the smileyface award, but TBH I think we got some very nice critique from fellow artists and watchers-only alike last year already. I'm open to more rewards for them though. Might bring even more help to those who ask.

7.) Would you like the workshop to be more interweaved with in-game Guild Wars than it has been? We only had a small party last time, should we do more than that?
I missed the party last year, due to a time-zone mixup... >_>
I think one big end party should be fine, planned a long time in advance, since it's difficult enough to find a time and date that's good for the majority of people anyways. Mid-contest partys would just complicate things and most likely not that many people would show up besides the "regulars".

8.) Would you want to be featured in a larger scale (podcasts, blogs, Guildmag) so that your art and/or progress becomes more public?
Yes. A little good publicity is always nice for artists.

9.) Is there a category of art you are partial to, which you think is not represented properly in the guild wars art community? Would you want us to push this further into the light with the workshop?
No category comes to mind.

10.) Do you want this workshop to be more related to GW2? Or not at all?
Like someone said earlier, I wouldn't want to see artwork that is about the artist imagining what GW2 will be like, or looking at GW2 logos that are nicely drawn/carved/whateverd... The little info we know about GW2 should of course be allowed, including what we've seen in screenshots, videos, etc.
But only already seen/existing stuff.

11.) Finally (for now ); WILL YOU BE PARTICIPATING IN THE HALLOWEEN WORKSHOP 2010? Haven't made up my mind yet.

Cheers everyone

Halloween 2010 came too soon... Last year I was hoping to loose some weight and try to make a necromancer costume, Dread Mask included (I've figured out how to make a dread mask with what I have in my garage, for the most part, surprisingly).

Aw well, not enough time for my life now. Maybe next year - or never.

-hugz all around-

1.) Could be ASAP. Gives people a chance to work on it earlier. But the fact that you announced this now already gives people a heads up, so whenever really. =P

2.) The categories last year were great.

3.) Gold, ectos, COMMISSIONS (this is a great, new idea). RL prizes would probably encourage more people to participate.

4.) If you can figure out how to do that, then by all means. But depending on how many people participate you may have to add categories or up prizes for current ones.

5.) Yes. Although if you do it this way there should be very few if any sub-categories. Perhaps just a simple 1-3rd place for each category would be sufficient enough.

6.) xD Considering I probably wont be entering this year, that would be nice. But again it depends on how much reward is available. Winners get priority ofc.

7.) I loved the party! Even if it was a bit short and kinda fell apart at the end. =P I say we should have another one! More of just a social thing and rewards ceremony though, no need for games or trivia (unless someone offers to).

8.) Yes (for others).

9.) I myself am more partial to photography, but that can't really be considered in a game related contest. =P Though I do think that whatever you make should be photographed well.

10.) Dosen't have to be related to GW2, that will come in future events. Any GW2 themed halloween stuff should be welcomed (I'd love to see them!). Maybe it can be made into its own category if enough people are interested in making GW2 Halloween stuffs.

11.) Probably not =/ No time with school, job, bf time. If I can think of something though I will.

Yes, where's Hoodie? Someone find him :P

...also I keep feeling the desire to add an umlaut over the 'o' in your name :P
