I posted this in the Riverside thread, but I'll post it here too.
Big congrats to those who won! I'm especially glad to see some of my friends placing. Good job guys, you totally deserved it
I would just like to mention and say congrats to those who didn't place too. I know how you feel exactly, 3 times now.
Please remember, the fact that you did not place in the official contest does not reflect on the quality of your work. Many great pieces of art were still left over.
I'd like to encourage all of you to continue submitting artwork for consideration
in the Wintersday Contest. It's always a treat to see such amazing pieces put forward.
I look forward to see lots of you in the Wintersday Workshop, and again, good job!
Don't be let down if you didn't win. If anything it should be an incentive to try harder, to get better, to push your limits! Not just for a contest but for yourself. Not winning and being criticised is part of life and definitely part of being an artist so it's better to get used to all kinds of letdowns. It builds your character hehe. Trying your hardest is also a victory.
There are other contests, other challenges and most importantly, challenge yourself for yourself.
I don't feel let down at all.
I got some nice Photoshop skills out of it and a new Wacom Intuos 4 tablet. I'd consider that to be a 1000% better prize. ^_^
I mostly feel sad that I can't help my little sister buy stuff for her HoM so she can get some rewards in GW2. She has all of 1 monument in there. Just gonna suck to tell her. I tried it last year pretty much for the same reason, and based on the feedback I received on my pic in this thread I thought I had a bigger chance this time around.

Community Update - November 2010 Contest Balances
This update is primarily targeted at redirecting the role of Tzu in Guild Wars contests. Tzu excels at making costumes and modeling them for pictures, and the results of the few previous official contest clearly show an imbalance in the number of winning spots Tzu has taken. In this update, we hope to rebalance the role of Tzu in future Guild Wars contests, while maintaining her viability in high level contests.
In addition to contest changes, we also looked at the viability of Tzu in other aspects of the Guild Wars community, and we hope that we will address all the players complaints.
Quote:
Tzu's appearance is not representative of the greater MMORPG playerbase. Because most costume makers cannot afford to hire models for their designs, we have decided to rebalance Tzu instead. We aim to bring it more in line with the level of the average cosplayer.
Quote:
Tzu's Appearance (Contest): split for Contests; Decreased height from 5'8" to 4'3". Decreased bust size from 32...34 to 22..24. Decreased age from 20 to 16. Removed the additional effect: has a right arm.
No contest-goer in Guild Wars is completely suited for costumes, but Tzu came closer than anything else. With these changes, we've tried to make a powerful and versatile contender that can be used well in a few situations, but will not overshadow other entrants in general categories.
Quote:
In addition to her appearance, we believe that Tzu's costumes are too professionally done for an amateur competition. Simply put, Tzu has an area of expertise that is too effective in the current metagame. With this update, we are looking to reel back some of this so that other contest goers can explore other options.
Quote:
Tzu's Costume Making: Increased activation time from 3...1 months to 12...8 months. Increased costs from £50 to over £9000. Tzu cannot use eBay or travel outside her home while activating this skill. Costume making cannot be casted on craft foam or craft paint, and must instead be used on cardboard and crayons instead
These changes were made to address the frequency and power of Tzu's costumes. By increasing the cooldown and costs of costume making, we hope that Tzu will have to tactically choose when to make her costumes, instead of spamming it at every occasion.
Quote:
Finally, we here at the Guild Wars community team felt that there was a need to address the state of Tzu's position in the Guild Wars community. We believe that she has been too prominent in the current metagame, especially with the advent of her recent "Workshops," with real in game prizes. These tactics are not supported by the community team at ArenaNet, and we have chosen to adjust some of the factors that lead to its success.
First, we believe that Tzu has too much in game items to give away. By redistributing some of her wealth, we believe her workshops can be brought more to the level of other community events.
Quote:
Tzu's Xunlai Storage: Removed the first two panes permanently. All purple items in storage are randomly traded with Red Iris Flowers of random other characters in Pre-Searing.
Also, Tzu's workshop is a bit too well-structured, which runs the risk of an imbalanced number of participants. We have decided to tweak her workshop in order to pull it back to the scale of other Guild Wars Events.
Quote:
Tzu's Workshops: Changed effects to: Create an eight level bureaucracy to manage the workshop. Each level must report only to the level above it. Judging can only be done by the highest level, and viewing entries can only be done by the lowest level. Added the additional effect: Restricted all communication to in-game all chat in district 1 Kamadan.
We here at ArenaNet believe that these changes will make for a balanced workshop that remains viable for future contests.
Charlie, I think this needs more punctuation....

Congratulations to the winners (and commiserations to those who put so much effort into some great artwork but didn't get anything this time). Charlie I was really rooting for your Gwens, it was such an original idea, glad to see you were one of the winners - and lol @ the reason for the delay, that's made my morning hehehe.

Maybe you can do a few commissions or guru contests to help your sis out? Sorry, I didn't mean to single you out, I wanted to direct the previous post for everyone but I worded it a bit badly.
Grats on the new tablet! That's definitely win win.
Yeah I thought about the commission thing. Maybe in the new year.
I am going to be super busy for the rest of this year, and it will be hard to find time to sit down and draw.
As for entering the Wintersday contest, I don't know yet. We'll see.
I look forward to the Workshop winners announcement, it'll be interesting to see who wins in which category! ^_^

Aww I know what you mean. >.<
I hope you find some time to keep painting even if just a little. I miss having lots of time to draw and soon it's time to start spazzing over Christmas too...
Sorry for the off-topic. I'll step back into the shadows now to stalk the entries this workshop has got hehe.
They also take game recordings and music recordings... but not literature.
BTW, when's the party again? I know it's this coming Saturday, but what time US Central? Reason being is that I got a class from 12:30 to 3:20 this weekend (it's a hybrid course and this week we gotta show up...). Though there's a chance it'll get canceled due to a meeting the teacher may or may not need to go to... So I most likely will not make it.
I think it's either 1 or 2 PM CST. O_o but I don't exactly remember.
But yeah winners or not, we all learned a lot of stuff from this workshop. The camaraderie and friendship that formed amongst us makes this activity absolutely worth it! So I believe we're all winners already before ANet announced anything.
(lol overly dramatic speech but it's true)
Also, they didn't have Wintersday contest last year from what I noticed. Will there be for this year?
Hm... I already have an idea for the Wintersday contest. Was gonna use it during a previous year, but didn't have time to enter the contest. I'd love to have a workshop or some such again for that.

Heh, yeah, same here - if I won, I was going to use that to help my boyfriend and my brother fill up their HoM, and buy my guild leader the minis he needs to finish out his (boyfriend doesn't get to play much because of his internet connection, brother got rid of a lot of stuff before the HoM, and my GL just has exceptionally poor luck with birthday minis).

@ Nian, eeeee, long time no see. <3
Good to see you still around GW. I had a little break too because life and it's many troubles intervened. Had to come back to start filling my HoM lol...can't wait for GW2.
These workshops are pretty interesting to follow since everyone's putting so much effort into it. I wonder if there will be a Wintersday one indeed...
Boohoo, nothing for me. Guess Anet and I have a different taste.. But congratulations to everyone who did place, aswell as everyone who didn't! Because participating is more important then winning (at least thats what I tell myself untill I actually win)
