The deadline for the Workshop this year will be 22/10!
I will allow submissions until 24/10, if you give a good reason (PM), and do so in good time (1-2 days before the deadline at the latest).
All thanks to Aeronwen, we now have a Gamescom Goodie Bag prize!! The prize consists of various goodies which were given out (or rather, had to be hunted down) at Gamescom:
1x Guild Wars 2 T-shirt size L
6x Guild Wars 2 tattoos
2x postcards: Caithe and Rytlock
1x Arenanet & NCSoft Keychain
1x large plastic bag with Guild Wars 2 & Aion print
1x "clapping fan" with Guild Wars 2 & Aion print
This prize will be given to an artist who manages to best portray the infamous Mad King Thorn. It could be humorous or menacing, above all MKT must be instantly reckognisable as exactly himself.
Given the subjectivity of the matter you are allowed to give a short explanation of your interpretation with your submission.
I was recently asked whether or not works of the Literature genre will be judged for awards besides the Lit award, and the answer is yes.
However it will be my first priority to place the best works of literature within it's respective award, and those who are left without a prize may then be judged for the rest.

lol I remember watching a marathon of that.

Hehe, it's awesome.
Yesterday they also had an episode from 2009 on Poveglia Island in Italy.
I've researched everything there is to know about that island, and it ain't pretty.
Very scary stuff O_o
I'd never ever go there.
Omai Marsh!! Looks so gooood! Those skulls look so funny, want to adopt a few :p The way you did the clouds is so lovely, and Gwens dress looks great too. One small tip I would have is to move the moon a little bit to the right, because now it touches the fence, which makes it looks like its some giant white cheese put on a stick :p If you know what I mean xD Also for mad king, I would make the redbrownish vs. grey contrast on his "pants" a bit less strong.
Charlie: Though I think you might have overdone the effect you just added a bit, it looks alot better, the twins now fit alot better in the hallway. I understand what you are trying to say with the lightning, but I think that would cause like 3 shadows, instead of one big one if you know what I mean. But with the current colour setting it looks alot better.
And I didnt say there was a difference in paintingstyle between the plints and the twin, just that the wooden plints where SO perfect they looked almost real, which wasn't the case for the twins (which is a good thing imo :p). But I also like to give you bad feedback so I can win >:)
Deathbyanarrow: I don't know what effect a second lightsource might have, it might have a cool effect, but it might ruin it aswell. Keep in mind that adding in another lightsource and be quite difficult. Though I'm just trying to understand your work a bit here, because it isnt completely clear to me here. Mad King Thorns head is between alot of pumkins? And what is the bluegreyish stuff around his head? Is that like his mantle? Because if it is, I would make it a more very dark (almost black) redorangeish colour. Beside that I don't see how you would need another lightsource really, I think the complete orange setting is quite cool. Though on the small part between yellow (light) en shadow I would make it a bit more reddish. Also if his head is "on fire" like its glowing the whole pumkin should be glowing. Ref. So I would make whole mad kings head a bit lighter so you can have some light on those pumpkins on the back aswell. Also the green lush on this head could be a bit darker with a bit more highlights. I was so free to show my suggestions in a picture stolen from you :p Hope you don't mind. Also btw adding in some textures would have a great effect. You can look on deviantart for some or use bigger textures from cgtextures.com There are even some pumpkin textures in there!
Ok so here is my latest progress. Man seeing all these great progressions I really loose all hope on getting a Honorable Mention >:(( I want one soo badly :( So I better start working harder and better. What do you think about the roof. I'm think of making it 2 wooden planks instead of tiles, might look better..
Sorry to the people who requested feedback aswell, but there are just toooo many posts :p Hard to keep up ^^

Tommy:
Yeah, the idea is he's kinda stuck in a pile. The purple stuff is his collar; back when i originally did it it was the darkest part of my picture and looked way more black. I added some purple just to vary the colour, but now that everything else in the piece is much darker the purple shows a little too much. Its one of the things i still need to fix, but its a quick fix so im waiting till the end :P
I see what you mean by making MKT a little more redorange. That's actually a good way to tackle the second lighting problem too! I never visualized the flesh illuminating that way, even though I see it ever year at halloween Dx The stem is also tweaked abit in the update im working on as I type, so changing that isnt a problem. i realized my stem/leaves needed to be cleaned up a bit too ^^
I'll look into some texture brushes on dA.. i might have found a few.
Raven:
Hmm, i think that's a little too bright. Im gunna try tommys way because it keeps a level of ambiance but still gives that secondary lighting it needs.
Tzu:
SIX DAYS D: GAH so much work to do, so little time!
my stuff hasnt been updated on the front page, so here it is (so you can just C/P it from a quote)
Also, is it too late to change my mind on the RL prizes? If i win them id just have to double check with my rents that its alright.

I'll clean some parts further with Fireworks before sending it to Anet. Such as the girl's chin, it looks a bit like she has a beard but I couldn't get it off with an eraser
Thanks, Tzu, for hosting this workshop! I'll just stay to lurk around now and try to keep the spirit up for my part!
I think I concur with you, Kiya, but it will take lots of space and load time Altough I modified my pic a bit further as I stated, so I could actually repost it.
That came out really, really nicely!! Those pumpkins just give it a very special touch that I wouldn't ever have guessed! And where the flash between the two hands comes from makes sense, perfect!

Yeah that's why I said use dark blue/nighttime colors. =P Tommy's idea looks good.
Tommy - xDD Poor moon :\ The pic looks really different from the last time I posted it . o:! And I keep looking at the moon and thinking that it's like, too big Dx
:U I have so much left to do D| and omg the pink dyes are so prettyyy!!!
Kiya - Thank you~! C: And the boots you made look so nice @__@ -takes- You're going to be taking piccies later today? : DDD
Shady - Ou thank you~! Hmm well I think I'll just make the ones in the front smaller :U <3 and to answer your last question |D I'm thinking of putting scattered candy in the front and maybe a ToT bag C:! I tried a cobble path but I'm just to bad with rocks -tear-
MARSH OHMYGOD I WANT TO HUG YOUR ENTIRE PICTURE!
Those pumpkins are AMAZINNGGGG. Did you do them all or are some C/P?
AHHHHHHH i can not contain the joy i feel when i look at your picture, it's almost embarrasing :x good thing there's no one in my house right now.. xD
Boots are now painted and once the weathering dries I will glue on the trim by the ankles and take a pic. (Yep I'm rushing. Its not fully cured but oh well, good enough.) Tonight I will take a test run pic in the tv room of the whole outfit, so anyone on late tonight I could really use critiques of anything I might have missed or what needs adjusting. My model wont be home for another 3 hours and by then its time to get the little pumpkins to bed, so about 4-5 hours from now. Argh Im not good at waiting!
Needs more frillies by the ankles.

Kiya, i'm going to a party tonight but i should be home around 11pm [EST], which will be just about when you make your update. So if i remember to come on, i'll be glad to CC your costume
Alright, i made some more changes.
1) one more pumpkin complete.
2) fiddled with the collar - it's not balanced so I have to tweak it more
3) made MKT more red, and reddened all the pumpkins
4) MKT stem is darkened
5) I might be forgetting something so PLACEEEHOLDER!
Please continue to CC about ANYTHING you see in the pic at all. I might not have made MKT red enough, but i tried a few levels of reds and this one looked the best without going overly red or being too dull. If you think it needs more red ill try it and go out of my comfort zone :P

@Marsh: hehe, that pumpkin background is so perfect for your pic! That spider in the back cracks me up each time I see your pic, because I keep imagining a 'nom nom nom' text with it XD
@ Death: I was flipping back and forth between your two pics and definitely think adding the red and lightening the bottom of the back pumpkins really makes it better! I can imagine doing that vine is going to be really tricky
Okay, just a couple mid-day updates. I'm making a lot of progress today. :3
These are still just snapshots. I want to try and spend most of my time actually working rather than just taking photos today. D:
Earlier today. Did more work on the arms, stomach, chest, and removed more paper.
Current. Added the head. The mask still isn't affixed as it's going to be.
Still to do: add hands, shoulders, mane, enhance tail, finish head and mask, finish upper chest, add burlap and chains, and do touch-ups.
Everyone's looking great!
@Death By An Arrow: If I were you, I'd take away a lot of the black area and just leave it dark. Keep the black as a vingette, but have less of it. I'd start shading with other colors, and add a little more texture to the pumpkins. The mad-king's head looks pretty good at this point, but I think it could still use a little more detail. :3
omg... i can't believe you made me even MORE excited to see the final piece It's going to be so awesome looking!
Yep. The burlap is going to be placed on strategic points to better show forms. You can see it's kind of hard to tell the difference between the horns and the rest of the body, or the front and the back of the chest. :3
The chains are just there to be awesome, although I might use one to disguise an additional support that I've been using while I'm not taking pictures.
