Wow, this is such an awesome idea I'm so glad I stopped by this forum to see some of these amazing WiPs!! I just can't believe some of the stuff you all can make as digital artists! I'll have to stick with old fashion pencils and maybe a literature piece, since I can't even edit something in photoshop, let alone create it!
BTW, I have to say, Ravenhawk, your drawing so far is absolutely gorgeous! It was amazing to see your idea evolve into what you have! I can't wait to see all the other finished projects!!
Name: Thistle Xandra
Art Form: old fashion pencils/ color pencils & literature
Idea: drawing will be something with costumes & story probably something about ritualists and spirits!
Progress Gallery: I still need to figure out how to do this (I've only linked pics before) I'll probably just post the story in one post when I'm done with the pic
Official Contest: [X] if the drawing doesn't come out half-bad, why not?!
Workshop Awards: [X]
OK, now I have to go do some thinking and searching for some pencils!
Has been a while since I posted. A brief update: I began doing the beginning of my final piece (I went with the second idea I had which revolved around my elementalist), but than I got busy with school and other stuff, and then as luck would have it I lost my Bristol board material that I was drawing on, so I can't finish or continue that work, or even restart it. Q_Q
Gonna be spending this whole week looking for that blasted thing, hopefully I can find it asap.
Will also spend this week thinking of something to write (unless Tzu decided to not go with the capable to submit two works).
I worked on my story intro a bit and think I've got my 3 characters' personalities figured out. This intro is a bit rough. I still have to add some more details and make the flow better, but I think I've got the horror/relationship feel of the story coming out and the plot line is starting to flesh itself out in my mind. I'm thinking that this intro will probably be about a one tenth of the final story, but who knows where the story will take me Anyway, here's the story WiP. Haven't yet touched the pencil sketches but that'll probably be next
“We really shouldn’t be here,” Ki pointed out, his anxiety rising when he heard his own echo as if coming from another voice agreeing with him. They hadn’t even known the room existed, and they certainly hadn’t expected that one of the shelves acted as an opening mechanism to the hidden room. If Ki hadn’t accidentally knocked into it, he could have been back in the Monastery, maybe even taking a nap, or sitting in the garden.
But no, he was stuck in some hidden room with potentially dangerous items and was most likely at risk for another punishment. He rolled his eyes and corrected himself. He was with the twins so there was no doubt they would get into some kind of mess that a punishment would be guaranteed and should be the least of his concerns.
“Oh stop it,” Rika said with nonchalance, not even bothering to turn around as she looked around the room, examining the contents with a fierce intensity from the knowledge that since the room was most likely forbidden, she would have to describe all the contents to the other students in the Monastery.
“If we’re not supposed to be here, then they shouldn’t have made the room,” Akan pointed out with the same logic that usually resulted in the three of them getting a punishment. He reached out for a small urn that was by itself on an upper shelf. Even though he was tall, he had to stand on his toes to reach it.
Ki’s eyes widened as he stepped forward to grab the urn before Akan dropped it, or worse, opened the lid to see what was inside. Akan gave him an innocent look and shrugged his shoulders, already looking for another item that looked interesting. Ki practically hissed, “Don’t touch anything!”
Rika’s soft laugh hit him in the gut like it always did. With a heavy sigh, he walked over to see what she was examining. He cradled the urn in his arms, treating it as a fully trained Ritualist should hold it. If the twins could possibly stay out of trouble and stop dragging him with them, the three of them should be full-fledged Ritualists within a year.
Rika pointed at one of the shelves. An unseeing eye floated in a jar of clear liquid. “That can’t seriously be real, can it?”
Ki leaned closer and quickly drew back. He could have sworn the eye turned to look at him. He was about to ask Rika if she saw it, but she was looking at him with an odd expression.
“You look like a full-fledged Ritualist holding that,” she said, a half-grin on her face. Holding spells were one of the last lessons they learned, because calling the assistance of an ancestor required immense spiritual power. Master Togo insisted that holding spells be only learned in the final year of training under constant supervision.
Ki looked down at the urn. It wasn’t as ornate as the other urns that held the remains and spiritual essence of the past heroes. In fact, it looked like more of a hybrid between the training urns and the urns with powerful ashes. Mostly black, the urn had gold filigree around the lid rim and bottom.
Akan peered around the only set of free-standing shelves in the middle of the small room. How Akan could manage to get out of supervision in any situation never ceased to amaze Ki. Even in a small room loosely packed with jars, urns, books, and other miscellaneous unidentifiable items, Akan could still maneuver himself into some kind of trouble. Luckily, Ki was used to covering for him, as in the common case when he wasn’t fast enough to prevent Akan from getting them into trouble in the first place.
The three of them had grown up together in two neighboring shacks in Kaineng City under negligent supervision. Even though the three of them were the same age, for as long as the three of them could remember, the twins always led the way to trouble while Akan led the way back. Even after nineteen years, Akan still watched the twins with unwavering loyalty. Luckily for Akan, despite the twins’ cavalier attitudes, they were as equally devoted to Akan. The best thing their parents did for them was abandon them together at the Shing Jea Monastery at age ten so they could at least have each other.
“You should drop it, see what it does,” Akan said with a grin. Had Akan been the one holding the urn, Ki had no doubt he would have already dropped it, just to see what would happen, regardless of the possible consequences. “Maybe it’ll be a ‘Fun was Akan’ effect and you could be a little less serious.” He disappeared behind the shelves again while Ki counted to ten.
“He’s got a point, you know,” Rika agreed, pointing at the urn. “It’s not like it could hurt. It’s at The Monastery after all, and it’s not like they keep dangerous stuff here.”
“And we should know,” Akan’s disembodied voice echoed in the small room.
“Perhaps it’s because, they – oh, I don’t know – keep it behind secret rooms?” Ki said with exasperation. It was never easy going against the twins when they decided to actually agree on something. He looked at the urn again, “Besides, we don’t even know if it’ll be an offensive or defensive effect since it doesn’t look like the other urns.”
“That’s why you should drop it and find out,” said the disembodied voice again.
“I’m not going to drop it, and what are you doing behind there anyway?” Ki said, walking around the shelf.
“Boo!” Akan shouted, jumping out at Ki. He wore a large mask made out of something unidentifiable that to Ki’s horror resembled actual skin. The eye-holes were small and deep, making Akan’s eyes appear sunken. Bright red stripes ran from the nose to each ear. Large and sharp teeth protruded underneath stretched lips. Ki couldn’t help but let out a cry of surprise from the shear hideousness of the mask coming at him. “Catch!”
Out of reflex, Ki caught the jar that contained a floating tongue. The urn was precariously held in his left hand as he caught the jar with his right. Both items threatened to fall but Ki kept his bearings and righted himself.
Until Akan crashed into him.
Both the jar and urn went crashing to the floor.
“Cool, isn’t this?” Akan said as he righted himself. He took off the mask, because he could barely see through it. He wore a look of immense pride. “I’ve found myself a Halloween mask.”
“That’s disgusting, Akan,” Rika said with an expression that showed what she thought of his choice in headwear. “And, look at the mess you made! That jar stuff is all over the place, and I am not picking up a tongue.”
“Aww, it’s not that big of a mess. It’s not like I meant to run into Ki,” he said with chagrin. He looked over at Ki, who was staring at the broken jar on the floor. The glass shards were scattered around his feet as he stood unmoving. “Don’t tell me you’re mad, Ki.”
“Wow, you actually made Ki mad?” Rika asked with some amazement in her voice. Ki was always exasperated with them, but he had never actually been truly angry at them, even though most of the trouble they got into was because of them.
Who was she kidding, all the trouble they got into was always because of them.
Ki stood immobile as he stared down, his chin length hair falling in front of his face like a curtain. He was completely and utterly silent.
“I’ll clean it up. Sorry,” Akan grumbled, walking out the secret door to get the cleaning pail. Their punishment was to clean up the storeroom anyway, so he figured cleaning a secret room in the storeroom wasn’t really extra work.
“Ki, it’s not a big deal, really,” Rika said softly as she touched his shoulder. He didn’t flinch like he usually did when she touched him. She pulled back her hand, suddenly afraid, even though she didn’t know why she should be. A shill ran down her spine and her throat turned dry.
“See! I’m cleaning!” Akan pointed out, as if they couldn’t tell what he was planning on doing with the mop and pail.
“Be careful,” Rika whispered as she ran her hands up and down her forearms, trying to chase the chill away. She wasn’t sure what she was referring to with her warning though. Was it the glass she was concerned about or the ominous feeling she was getting?
“Hey, where’re the ash and the urn?” Akan asked as he lifted the mop to pick up the liquid. Usually, when an urn is dropped, the spiritual energy held within the ashes would cause the urn to reform for additional uses. He frowned and suddenly stood. “Is a spell still active?”
As if snapping out of thoughts, Ki said slowly, “I don’t think anything happened.”
“Are you sure, because I have a bad feeling,” Rika countered. Ki looked over at her and smiled the familiar smile that always made her heart race.
“I’m sure it’s because of the jar breaking. Who knows what was in there? It’s probably the smell giving you a bad feeling.”
“This stuff does smell pretty bad,” Akan agreed with a frown.
Rika nodded hesitantly, “Yeah, that’s probably it. But where’s the urn?”
“It’s probably a special urn designed to just dissappear instead of break.”
“I wish they would have made the jar out of the same stuff,” Akan grumbled loudly as he pushed the tongue and the glass shards under one of the lower shelves. There was a clearance of about three fingers, so he was sure no one would find it. “Now this is where you try to convince us to tell Master Togo about what happened, but I’m not doing it.”
“We shouldn’t,” Ki said softly, backing away and moving to the door.
“Wow,” Rika said surprised. “I was also expecting you to say we should, too.” The two twins walked out the secret entrance, Rika leading the way and Akan carrying the pail and wet mop behind him, secretly hoping that Ki wouldn’t point out that he had just hid the mess instead of cleaning it. To his relief, Ki seemed to let that go.
Ki watched the twins pick up some of the cleaning supplies they left on the floor. They were bickering like they always did. They left some rags and another pail for him to carry back. He took one last look at the room and smiled, his eyes suddenly glowing an eerie gold that made his irises and pupils completely disappear.
“No, Master Togo doesn’t need to know about this at all,” he said softly and closed the secret door with a smug smile.
This seems like it's a great idea! I may perhaps make something for the spirit of things but it really depends on how much sparetime i can accrue/if i remember
I feel like this would be a good time to learn how to use this tablet I have; i bought it a year ago and got way too busy at the time and never urged to use it until now. Im thinking of starting out with a boba fett helmet, so maybe I'll change that up and fit it into this workshop (Boba Fett kind of looks like the mad king..? o.O)
So I'll put my name down just incase, and I'll be sure to check back and critique other works. I love providing feedback for other people because it gives me ideas of ways I can improve my own work, so I try to critique as much as I can ^^
Name: Death By An Arrow
Art Form: Errr... Not quite sure. A drawing of somesort, whether pencil/grayscale or digital will depend
Idea: Something... halloweeny. LOL I really dont have an Idea yet
Progress Gallery: I have a deviantART and photobucket account, but do you want the whole progress gallery saved as one image or can they be organized into a folder or category in my profile?
Real Life Prizes: Notanks
Official Contest: If I'm happy with my piece, why not. Its not like id have a worse chance of winning by not entering.
Workshop Awards: Yeah, yeah!
I might ask some newbish questions if I take the digital art route, so if its considered to be derailing from the exact focus of the thread (halloween workshop; not teach me how to shoop :P) i can keep it to a minimum and/or PM anyone willing to help my inquiries ;P
Name: Najade
Art Form: Digital most likely
Idea: Still working on one
Progress Gallery: I'll add the link once make one =)
Real Life Prizes: [X]
Workshop Awards: [X]
I'm not 100% sure if I'll be able to finish anything in time (university is being mean and decided to give out a bunch of extra projects l for next month -.-) but I'll try this looks fun to do!
Charlie: Just like everyone else, I love the folds in Gwen's clothes, they look so cool!
Can't wait to see the finished full pic ^_^
Kiya: *floored* Looking so much forward to the scene pictures!
Marshy: I don't know how you do it... your posts should have a cuteness overload warning button or something! So awesome!
Raven: Wow, you pic really came together! Love the atmosphere, and her expression!
As for me, I restarted my pic many times... Now I dunno what to work on... *lol*
I will try and continue my grasping dead pic, I like the theme. I might have to decide between submitting 2 pics.
I got very carried away with learning to draw, read heaps of tutorials, and practiced a LOT. I also upgraded myself to a Wacom Intuos 4 M graphics tablet ^_^
OMG what a step up from the Bamboo! I swear it makes me draw better
I wanted to practice drawing eyes, makeup and hair... Like I said, I got carried away, so this is my pic now...
She's gonna be pouring candy corn from one hand to another. Background will be the same as in my grasping dead pic.
The skin is not finished yet, that's why it looks so blotchy. I find smooth blending of colors difficult, but super fun ^_^
Her armor is not shaded yet.
Her one eye looks a bit weird on my screen because of stupid .jpg compression. I gotta try and fix that.
Loooots and loooots more blending ^_^
(I know, the hair doesn't cast any shadow on her yet... it was a quickly drawn test-like hair.)
What do you guys think?

wow, minami... the face is very beautiful and I love the makeup choices! The lips, upper eye shadow, and shadowing on the cheekbones came out really, really well! Personally, I would lighten the under eye area (so it doesn't match the upper shadow) since I don't put makeup there (it tends to crease after laughing alot all day), but that's just my own personal opinion and I'm definitely no makeup expert I love the green of the eyes by the way, and I hope you keep that color in the final version!
The Artbook award is a very special new addition to the Workshop. It is the Artbook I won with my Dwayna costume last year, untouched and pristine. In order for you to be eligible for this award you MUST be okay with providing me your address via e-mail if you win, and you can not have won a similar artbook (signed by the entire dev team) before, or this year. I will pay for the shipping, within a padded package. If you wish to compete for this, please tick the appropriate box in the submission sheet at the bottom of this post. If you compete for this and you win an artbook in this year's official contest, I will remove you from the list of competitors toward this particular reward. You will of course be eligible for every other award in the Workshop nonetheless. This prize is given to the all-round best artist of the Halloween Workshop, based on progress, critique-giving and receiving, skill and quality of final product.
and a bonus has been added:
Quote:
BONUS! JR will be handing out a red Guild Wars 2 t-shirt (PAX-style) to an artist who stands out amongst the rest. He/she will be given a choice of size M or L, and must be marked with a (willing to receive RL prizes) on the list below. Tzu will be giving out two grey t-shirts (PAX-style) in size L to two -marked artists based on a ranom number generator lottery!
This was made a bonus and not an Award. This is because the t-shirts will be given to artists independent of the judging for the awards, meaning someone who has already won a Workshop award can win a t-shirt as well, provided of course that he/she is marked with a .
@ Minami: I love your new work, she really looks like Minami too (and you! )! <33
I'm leaving Eir (probably) for a project more related to GW1 (and WiK). Secret for now in case I switch back to Eir, or something else yet again. It's difficult to find a project which is manageable with the very limited time I have to spare. :/

I feel you on the uni work, it's a bit of a gamble for me too but we will just have to try our best!

You may submit a maximum of 2 entries, but you can only ever win 1 Workshop Award.
You do not have to aim toward a particular Award, you will be considered a candidate for everyone.

Tzu, regarding the random drawing t-shirt... any come in xl? I'm a big guy (6'8" tall). Medium won't fit and large would be tight.
Also: Found my bristol board material! Will get to drawing this weekend, hopefully be able to catch up a bit to everyone else (speedy devils, give us amateurs a chance!).
I was very nervous about posting that WIP drawing here... I had no idea what anyone would say, seeing that I don't have experience in drawing or receiving C&C regarding anything drawn. I'll try and dig up the other WIPs of this drawing, at least I made some while I was in the practice/sketch phase of this picture. ^_^
Tzu, I actually tried to make the drawn Necro a mix between my in-game Necro and my real life self. ^_^ SO glad you could see it! I was trying to mix it together so that my drawn person looks more "real" and not game proportions.
Thistle, my Necro's eyes are that color, so it will stay that way too Thanks so much for your comment!
Tzu, the real life prizes are amazing!!! Thank you all so much for giving those away to winners!
*runs and makes sure the little sign is next to her name on the front*
It's not very exciting now, just a paint pic of where I want my characters to go in the actual drawing
I've got some lore for my story, too. Tzu, should I just keep adding pieces of the story bit by bit using spoil tags or create a completely separate thread (or create a webpage??) for it and the final version?
Edit: Decided to add the lore I finally settled on about how urns are created
Origins of the Urns: When a hero dies, they are cremated and through ritual, a piece of their spirit is held to the mortal plane. This is a reward and the deceased hero is essentially given immortality, choosing to aid new generations of heroes through the traits they displayed during their own lives. Whether the heroes choose to give defensive or offensive abilities depends on the hero and this choice is reflected in the urn that is manifested after the ritual.
However, sometimes a hero will die tragically and refuse to accept death. Through ritual, the fury and rage experience at death causes a malevolent spirit to form. These occurrences rarely happen, but when they do, usually because the body is found and the Ritualists bestowing the cremation honor are unaware of the emotional turmoil during the hero’s death, the urn created takes neither offensive or defensive appearances. The urn is black, signifying the darkness and rage of the hero’s soul caused by the untimely death. Nothing will happen if the urn is held, because of the gold filigree bindings keeping the sorrow and rage from overwhelming the carrier. If the urn is broken, the malevolent spirit is released, and only the greatest heroes can even hope to stop it. The only known way to counter these abominations is to lock the urn away with the desperate hope that no one is fool enough to release the darkness within...

Reason: added lore
The base sketch and highlights (I already did the armor lineart here, so I wouldn't have to draw skin and waste time where it's not gonna be visible anyways):
sketch & highlights
Some more highlights, middle tone and shadowy, low light areas:
shading start
Now a big jump, I forgot to save any screenies, cause I got caught up in details
Basically, I put a palette together, and blocked in the in-between colors. Then I made the block areas smaller and smaller, then started to blend. All done using the brush tool on hard setting, tablet pen pressure and size sensitivity enabled (custom brush shape).
You can clearly see the block edges still.
blocking
Where I am now, the pic you can see in my previous pic post.
Worked on the eyes, makeup and the basic hair, blended a LOT, sketched the jewelries, and midtone colored the armor.
blend
Hope you guys find these pics helpful & entertaining on how a drawing noob works.
It just takes a lot of patience, redrawing and practicing.
Look at reference pictures, they help.
I've been doing so much drawing... I hope I won't get an inflamed wrist.. lol
I've had some free time to draw a lot. ^_^
Of course I think making 3D pictures for a few years now, it gets ingrained in you how a hand moves and what it looks like from certain angles. All the times I had to zoom in close to a hand and pose it joint by joint....
Shaded the armor plus drew texturing on it, and put shades on the skin where the armor is, so it looks more put on her.
Also shaded the hair.
Color blocked the head dress, and its jewels.
Did the lineart (a crappy one at that, but it's only for guide) for the arm jewel.
I need to draw those candy corn before I spend too much time on the hands and palms... >_>
EDIT: No ambient color is added yet, I learned that that comes later in the process, and shouldn't be the first thing you draw :P

So very cool, Minami! It still floors me how drawings can go from sketches to digital art pieces, so I love how your post shows your choices AND why you did them!!
Is the final armor color going to match her eyes or are you going for a different shade of green?
