The reason why I found so many, was just in-case one of them really didn't help you too much, maybe another one would. I like your ideas so far and the art is lookin' nice, but who's eyes would they be? I'm a bit strung up on that, since I am wondering if the eyes had an identity, if it would give the image more of a story than just eyes with Grenth and Dwayna in them, or one eye with just Dwayna. You know what I am trying to say? I still think it's really cool either way though! =D
Uh, not sure if i should really be asking this here specifically, but how much of you use a tablet, and if so, which? Thanks in advance =o
I really want to learn to properly photoshop, sketching, drawing, colouring, realism...all of it...but i'd need a new computer and most likely a tablet...Which sucks, cause they don't ship in Sudan in 90% of sellers and you wouldn't find it over here *sob silently*
I think I can say that A LOT of us use a tablet. Drawing with a mouse is so much harder and is (imo) never able to create something as beautiful as with a tablet.
Myself, I have a Wacom Bamboo Fun, but going to get an Intuos4 this christmas.
Here on page 8 we had discussion about how to choose a tablet to your preferences.
Also more info here.
@GeminiJuSa: I think your wip is looking very good so far! I like the eyes you've drawn. Like Tommy's commented, blending isn't too hard to do as long as you remember to keep your brush at low opacity/flow. What I like to do is paint in the lighter and darker areas with a harder brush (around 50% opacity/flow) and then start blending them with the lower opacity brush, little by little, by using the eyedropper to choose the colours that start showing up while you blend.
Generally, the airbrush is best for super-smooth blending, but I kind of like the texture that blending with a rougher brush does.
@Nemesis: Great tutorials! Thanks, I think I'll use a couple of those myself next time I'm drawing close-up of eyes.
@Ninja Monk: I use a Wacom Graphire4. Basically, Wacom tablets are the best quality, so I recommend getting one of them (unless you want a tablet that will probably break down during your first year of using it - then go for one of the other brands :P). Wacom Bamboo is a nice, cheap tablet that's good for people buying their first tablet, and Wacom Intuos is what professionals generally use once they've saved up enough money to buy one.
You can learn drawing the old fashioned way too: with a pencil and paper. A lot of drawing is about sketching out things, and having maybe 8 unfinished works out of 10 drawings. Sketching out on paper also helps with the hand-eye coordination and lets you practice many different techniques that aren't quite the same to do in Photoshop (such as smudging pencil by hand for lovely gradient effects).
For example, it's true that pretty much all of my finished works are done on the computer, but I also have a normal sketchbook that I got last Christmas and that has been pretty much filled during the past year with sketches, studies and random doodling. Need to get a new one again for Christmas.

I beg to differ. http://grb76.deviantart.com/ <- he does his drawings entirely with a mouse. I wish I had THAT level of talent with a tablet.
Ok that is quite epic ^^ But it must be way more time consuming! It can't be D: lol with a mouse, I'm already getting nightmares. Its so hard to make acurate strokes (trying it out )
I use a Wacom Intuos 4 M, upgraded from a Wacom Bamboo Fun not too long ago.
Awesome tablet <3
EDIT: Closeup of the belt. Only 1 thing's missing from it, will be added later (the long hanging down thingie on the side which you can see on the top of the picture).

Yepp, I got it when I was drawing the pic for the Halloween Workshop ^_^
It's SOOOO awesome! O_O
I'm so happy with it, I'd never go back to my tiny bamboo fun anymore (also, I gave that to my sister ^_^)
You gonna love it!
BUAHAHAHAHAAAA I JUST GOT IT My dad just came home with my 2 new toys: the iMac and Intuos 4. Damn exams next week, can't wait to try them out. No study this evening
@Tommy and Perynne: I do blending in that way but I just can't get the places or the hues right anyway X_X It doesn't look good... But gonna try some more once my new computer has been built
And yes, there are artists that use mouse only and still owns so hard at about the same time as with a tablet. Before I got my first tablet I drew with a mouse, and I managed to do quite well (for the skill I had then) when drawing comical stuff based on a scan :P It's still not like I never use the mouse, but yes, I do feel hindered if I don't have my tablet.

@Gemini i kinda owe you one ;P So here it is (sorry for drawing over your picture, but i feel like i would explain it easier that way )
I was just painting over left eye (this is 10 min job so its not so accurate :X ) First, your eyes look like too wide open, so upper eye lid should be lower. Other then that, proportions are fine. Iris should be smaller too.
To achieve realistic look, eyelashes help a lot (and i mean A LOT). They should also cover one part of the eye (the best way to see that is to observe your own eyes in front of a mirror) basically they don't go up right away (and obviously i don't know how to explain this right XD /fail ), don't forget shadows they cast on the eye. The easiest way to draw eyelashes is : photoshop: hard brush with applied shape dynamics and other dynamics. In painter airbrushes > tapered detail air small size. The darkest part on the eye is in the corners. DON'T use soft airbrush, in ps use hard brush with flow on <50%, that way you'll get perfect flow for painting. For blending in ps use (i think its in nature category) Stipple 43 with other dynamics applied.
Any suggestions on the layout? Otherwise I think I am done with this one.
And no progress gallery this time because I did not remember to take any pictures while working on these. Well I did for the first attempt of Night Falls cover, but not of the one I ended up using.

*enjoying watching all the nice work being posted*
@Tommy: Congratulations man! Enjoy your new tablet
*grumbles jealously* :P I know i won't be able to get mine at LEAST till summer 2011 , so I will just stare enviously at google pictures and buy a sketchbook as was Perynne's advice
@Koreena: Looks awesome! I'm in love with the plushie and the pillow...boy would i love to sleep next to/on top of those, respectively...
@Eastern: I just wanted to commend you on being so helpful Also checked out the pictures and i think it's absolutely amazing good job!
@Minami: I LOVE THAT BELT! Wow! It's very ritualistic Job well done, to you and your sister/mother (whom will now be dubbed Minami's Little Helpers)
@Gemini: I agree with what Eastern said. I also thought...couldn't you draw a grenth face, with a realistic confused look (considering the metal mask, that'd be...probably impossible)...then you could have the reflection of Dwayna in his eyes, giving the present (Which better be a cookie!)
Edit: I just noticed...if you're planning on colouring dwayna, unless you make a huge image, all the detail might make it confusing and packed up...though we'd have to wait and see how you'd colour it
Oh and i'm currently staring enviously at Eastern's name, cause the fact that he could make such awesome eyes makes me feel hopeless
@Everyone: Thanks for tablet advice
Sorry for double post, but i'm working on pic now, and i just wanted to extra thank tommy for help <3
Oh and...Perynne this is YOUR fault! You're taking the blame for the entire female gender of homo sapiens. STOP HAVING WIERD LEGS FOR CHRISTS SAKE!
is it so hard to ask you to have a knee? *cry*
I have decided that i will not try to confuse myself by making the colouring too complicated. I'll probably go through 4 or 5 times but once i get some good looking shading + maybe some highlights down, i'll stop. I need to go over my basics :P I don't expect to win but i've learnt so much and it's making it all so worth it

Thanks Nemesis, Shewmake, Tommy, Kiya, Eastern, and Ninja Monk ^_^
I asked my mom and my sister to help me, since I've never done a costume before (neither did they, but there's power in numbers lol). They were visiting us, and it was a real fun way of spending quality time together.
We had this really cool thing going, where we would each pick a song to play and listen to on youtube, one after the other.
My sister is a huge GW fan too Had we had more time, she would've put the costume on, we would've painted the tattoos on her too and take pics of her and photoshop us together into one picture.
Oh maybe next time
Progress pic, btw:
The brassiere.
Took a normal bra from Victoria's Secret, and covered it with matching material so it'd fit with the rest of the costume.
Glued stripes on it (which my sister had to correct, cuz my stripes were anything but straight LOL), made the funky little thing hanging on it, and sew those angled materials into the top.
I know that this bra has straps, I couldn't find a comfortable strapless one anywhere that would've fit the purpose. Figured, I'll photoshop them out later ^_^

Wooohoooooo I first post from my new iMac. Intuos 4 isn't working properly yet though Also getting used to a new keyboard D:
And CRAP! Colours on the iMac are different (I think my laptop failed) so my entry looks so bad now D: Much more yellow, needs more blue! I wonder if all my drawings have these strange colours. Omai D:
Edit: I can't believe I let people pay for my commissions D: Colours look so strange, way too yellow. Wraahhh
Last edited by Tommy's; Dec 15, 2010 at 09:31 PM // 21:31..
@Tommy: As far as i've seen, your colours don't contain alot of yellow. maybe it would be better to finish the pic on your old comp/laptop w/e , whatever you were using before imac...then you can get used to imac colours when building from scratch , not changing the whole pic ;o
gz again I HATE getting used to a new keyboard...i had to use my mother's laptop for a week, and now every time i want to press Control , i press the start button SO annoying!
@Minami: Oooh it's so pretty! I can't wait to see the final thing, looking forward to headdress imparticular
Ok well mainly for Tommy's sake, i posted my 70% finished leg lineart. I have to go but i want opinions pleaase! <3 http://s1215.photobucket.com/albums/...rrent=Legs.jpg
Thanks in advance <3 ]
EDIT: One thing i KNOW is that the legs are two thick to be Dwayna's, if you compare it to GWWIKI pics, but i'm happy with them
That looks a lot better! Definatly. Perhabs make her left knee (right on for the viewer) even more fluent, like the other leg. But definatly better!
And as far as my concerns go towards the colours of my iMac; I'm afraid the colours show up at Anet the same as they do on my mac, and if thats the case, my drawing looks way worse
