wow, arya that looks freaking amazing! I love the marvel-comic style of your characters (if that is your influence. i used a marvel comics book to help me learn anatomy and it looks ALOT like the style). It looks like your art should explode into a bright light, but you painted right before it could.
YAEY STORIES
And for the bears; do you mean in comparison to my digital sketch? Because, funny you say that, I actuallyenlarged it (accidentally) when i drew it on the bristol board, so the bears and the chest are almost half the bristol board in size.
I haven't worked on my piece this week and probably can't until sunday onwards because I've had somethings thrown my way this week.
Durrdurr i forgot the advice half!
Nemesis: Welcome! I love the melandru shrine! the detail/shading in the bark is just the way I like it ^^
Hairnet: BAHAH, i love ogden's face! Great work so far xD
Arya: You already get abovelove (that just sounds wrong...) so i figured id ask; when you paint I assume you sketch on a new layer. What do you do when you start blocking in the colour? I find that's the hardest part, for me, of digital painting. Its like that little hurdle i dont want to jump over so i just stand infront of it.

Name: Nemesis-of-the-Gods
Idea for Entry: Grenth and Dwayna realize that they are the only gods that REALLY get into Wintersday, so they make an X-Mas tree out of Melandru's statue.
Genre of Art: Drawing with Pencil on Paper
Progress Gallery: UPDATE, new sketch progress from today --> http://nemesis-of-the-gods.deviantar...llery/27491109
@Death by an Arrow: Thank you so much, and I am glad to hear that you like it. Heh if you like the bark the way that it was then I would like to know how you like the more detail that I gave it today =P

nemesis: q.q that looks so grand. I love all the little knots and dimples in the bark, it really adds to the realism. I also really like that cloth and the post! The folds in the cloth look so natural and free :3
My only quirp is that the snow on the shrine looks like shredded fabric. Perhaps making it more rounded at the bottom could help? or if its an icicle-type effect really push the contrast. Right now it looks like someone left their armor to dry and a large cat came by and used it to sharpen his claws :P (but... in a good way? it still looks really nice D
what do you use to get such a good quality image? It can't be a scanner, because pencil + scanner = tehsaddest of all the orphans.

Thanks so much, it's good to hear that because I was a bit skeptical on whether or not the bark and the cloth were turning out "realistic" today. So that gives me a sigh of relief haha.
Oh yeah, I see your point. It does kind of look rather odd now that you mention it... I guess that I was starting out with the snow just kind of being on the branches, then I wanted there to be icicles hanging from the branches. Erm, I don't know how I would really define the icicles any more though since they are so small, but I think that if I just rounded them off it would look really weird too. I'll experiment with it later though and see what I come up with. I kind of like it though. Hmm, we'll see.
Bah the quality really isn't that great. I do use a scanner, not a high-end one either haha. Yes, I am very familiar with my drawings being totally annihilated by my scanner, so I'm not sure. Maybe I just got lucky this time and my scanner decided to scan nicely for once? >.>

hm, strange about the scanner. It really doesn't look like scanned-quality. For the snow/icicles, even though they're still small you could still emphasise the crystal effect on it. Even though thats not very clear...
You know how when you look at a crystal, one side is obviously recieving light and one is obviously shadow, but there are still squares/shapes of darker colour in the light side and vice versa? You could try something like that.
Did that make anysense at all? I could perhaps find a picture to aide the description if its too confusing to decode.

*Shrug*
And yeah I know what you mean, that will definitely be challenge with how small they are, but I could try to maybe shade them a tad more than I have. Now that we're talking about this ice, I want to know, the water that Melandru is pouring looks frozen, right? I may have to emphasize a bit more on the shading on that too... Hrmm *stares down drawing* I'll figure something out. And nah it's not confusing, just going to be difficult to draw haha.

Yeah, I got that impression. It would just need to be shaded in the same style as the icicles when you figure out how you're going to. Since they're both ice, itll be easier to make the connection if they look similar.

Alright good, just making sure. Oh yeah of course, it would be really odd if I made it look different than the other ice.
Thank you so much for your feedback, it is greatly appreciated!

@AryaBladedancer: I really like what you're making! It looks awesome and I like your style! I think the upper body seems to stretch a bit too much, but I assume it's a part of the style. Love the hips on Dwayna!
And thank you for your kind words! I thought it would be fun to have her little minions (they are bone fiends) play in the snow. The character isn't very playful, but she's a bit weak for her pet monsters. She thinks of the bone fiends as cute pets and can't help but to smirk at their play. About the "empty" space; I like to have it there to get some space into the scenery. For me, the composition doesn't get to crammed. She could sit farther away from the bone fiends as it suits her personality to sit back and observe. But I thought it was fine that way.
Fingers crossed so that the walk-through tutorial will turn out nicely, and be entertaining! Never made anything like it before. You'll all get to see how I think when I drew everything and why every little thing is the way it is ^^

On my own progress....made alot(lol) tonight... spent the last two hrs coloring and I think my hand just might fall off.
Pery, I added in some highlights like you mentioned and I'm very happy with the way its turning out. I'll post a pic tomorrow. Time for me to get to bed..it's 11pm and I have to be up at 3am for work! YAY! (/end sarcasm).

@Thistle: Thanks! My thumb is a bit better today, I think I can manage drawing if I don't press on the pen too hard.
About your prologue, it's a very interesting read! Can't wait to read the full thing. There are a couple small grammar mistakes (such as it should be "felt like" instead of "felt that" in the first paragraph, and missing the "a" in "the sharp crack of a slap"), but they can be fixed for the final version. I offer to do proofreading, if you'd like.
@frostkisses: Eeep. Have a good day at work! Looking forward to seeing how your entry looks now.
@GeminiJuSa: Looking forward to seeing the "making of" tutorial. I love watching other people's drawing process, and your style is so unique that it'll be fun to follow.
@Nemesis: Perhaps do a bit of stronger shading between the icicle and the snow? Just to separate the two easier. Or some kind of icicle texture (if you look at one closer, you can see it has sort of "rings" around it, and it's very bumpy). And depending on the background the icicles could be drawn darker. If the background is dark, some of that darkness would show up through the icicle, but wouldn't touch the snow.
Looking good so far though. I love the frozen waterfall and the texture in the tree bark.
@Death by an Arrow: Awwww, you sound like you have a fun class. We never had t-shirts. And a teacher making funny noises, that's always awesome.
@Free Hairnet: Hello, and welcome! Glad to see another new face joining us. Your start looks awesome, I love how much expression they've all got. And hehe, Pyre reminded me of some kind of horned devil at first... until I remembered that yes, he IS that big. XD

Arya Bladedancer: Update
I have some small updates. I started adding in some color to the characters after looking through the suggestions and I'm at a bit of a stuck point. I can't decide if I want to go with a blue Dwayna like the Avatar of Dwayna http://images.wikia.com/gw/images/8/...oncept_art.jpg or purple and gold as the concept art on the wiki shows http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/6...1e9bae9ny2.jpg. I sort of feel like the gold and purple looks a little too much like Lyssa, which may be why the avatar was changed to blue and silver, but I wasn't sure if the blue and silver was too subtle still. Maybe giving her the golden magic but keeping her blue?
Nemesis: Yay! So glad you came to the workshop. I really think that the frozen snow looks great on the top branches and the waterfalls look pretty good too! Maybe if you added a few drips of snow on melandru herself, like frozen water dripping from her wings or elbow area. It's coming along really great though! I didn't get the ripped cloth thing that Death said initially but I do see where he's coming from. I think that darkening the bark at the end and leaving the snow white will help with that. Right now everything is still pretty light but I imagine you'll change that towards the end.
Perynne: Thank you for the comments and the feedback, I took it into consideration and I agree that having some color really helps make the characters feel more like themselves instead of just the flat blue monotone coloring.
Tommy's: hehe, thank you, I agree that having the colors subtle will be stronger. And I appreciate the feedback, that's what the workshop is for yeah?
Aeronwen: Ah, sorry I should have been more clear. hehe. I meant I entered the Halloween workshop too late to start a progress gallery. I had already finished my submission by the time i Learned about the workshop so I only had 1-2 screenshots from the creation process. I still had a blast but I'm glad that this time I can participate more in the feedback and discussion area.
Free Hairnet: I LOVE your little sketch style, very cute even in stick form! I really love the style that you have going on here and I love that you're representing lots of different classes. I know these are just WIP shots, but I'd like to see the final image a bit bigger if possible. It's a little on the small side. Looking really good though!
DeathByAnArrow: Hehe, well, I could go on for paragraphs about painting methods, haha. To summarize, yes, I paint on multiple layers. I usually start with 3-5 and every time I do something new I do it on a new layer so I can see how it works without messing up my other stuff. I usually have a flat color canvas on the bottom, a sketch layer set to multiply on top, and in the middle I put the 'base' colors, which is what I assume you mean by blocking in color. I paint in the big basic colors beneath the sketch keeping the sketch layer on multiply so it's nice and dark. Then as I start shading and adding more detail I'll start new layers over the sketches and start covering up the line work. Hope that makes sense.
And thank you everyone for the comments!

Wow, I kind of like both. But yes, I think for the sake of clarity, you should have Dwayna blue and perhaps have her cast golden magic. You could also think about having her headdress and the dress decorations in a yellowish hue, and then the rest as blue.
Purple Dwayna looks awesome, but like you pointed out, it's a bit too close to Lyssa...
