@Penguin: That, is AWESOME! Not only the final result, but the video itself! It's very inspiring and interesting. Suiting music too! Wow, now I want to pic up a brush and paint traditionally too (but I'm so sucky at that it's sad)
@Koreena: Looking good! It's gonna be really nice to see the final result. Using the tv for reference screen is awesome too. Maybe I should connect the computer to father's wide-screen HD tv and enjoy the game HD-style? Good for inspiration I suppose
So I'm gunna do what changes I can, but for time's sake im going to do what I need to finish as fast as possible. as I now have 4 nights to finish this and I have yet to paint yet :| I have lost my long weekend to some family thing, and I was counting on doing a lot of work then :/
I hear ya on the time crunch. I'm not sure I'll be able to get done, so I'm filing away the marsh photo shoot as 'plan B'.
I still want the other for the yard, however, so onward.
Day 1:
Settled on 3 of the posts for the contest entry, will likely have more for the yard.
"Rigid wrap", plaster bandages are the greatest thing ever. Forming the branches as I need them. The front little spike is to help support the skull later.
I know the game has this type a perfect circle, but I prefer a more primitive look. I also can't stress this enough: Real sinew on your lashings, people. The fake stuff sucks.
I'll get a full tutorial up when they're done, but started the leather banners for the posts.
And, started on a new corpse...
Probably get a tutorial up for that as well, as my method differs from the 'normal' ones.
@Death By An Arrow
Yes i will add flames or something similar to the pumpkin . The last drawing you posted looks very cool! I love the towering Mad King over the small human on the rock . But as Thistle and Bonjela said some of the proportions look a bit off (like the big right shoulder), but i am sure you are working on that .
@Marshmallow
That's so adorable! I look forward to the finished piece !
@Ravenhawk
The bear is soo cute ! Your piece is really coming along very nicely. One thing i notice that the figures in the background on the right side are very small. They look rather far away. I don't know if that's on purpose i just noticed it.
@Draken Burst
Those pictures are awesome! Charrlie using his mighty Cake Knife... Love it
@Penguin
wow that's amazing! Both paintings (sides??) are very, very awesome!
I haven't had much time to work on my piece. Rendered the chair a bit more, tried new colours and increased the contrast. I hope the colours and the contrast are not too extreme :s. I know that my screen shows the colours duller than many other screens and is not color-calibrated, so i hope that it doesn't look too awful on your screens. But it's only a test and wip anyway and I will tone it down before i send the final to Arenanet, as they definitely have good screens
Eeep, uh, hi. I'm kind of late, and I've never actually posted in Nolani before (though I have lurked here for about a year or something now)...so this is a bit awkward...ha.
But I've decided this year I'm going to give the official contest a shot, so I thought I'd join in on the workshop here as well. Sooooo, if you'd let me even though I'm late to the party, I'd like to enter...

Uhh.. WOW Penguin, that video has now been watched many times by me, and I'm still amazed with your painting skill! You get the right colors down so fast and hardly correct them. Did you make a digital sketch first for colors, or was it all straight from the imagination? Either way, extremely impressive.
*sets the bar higher for myself*
Btw, do you have like a place where you keep all your paintings online? I would LOVE to see more, besides the wintersday and halloween entries.
Today I finally found some time to get started on one of my props.
First part of the first one is in the oven right now before I can make her some arms and legs.
When she is done she will be doing something sinister to a Moa which I will post when it's done.
Also made a progress gallery.

And for something extra: in my initial concept there are six columns to the top of the castlewall, I scrapped that and thought I make them shorter and put statues on top of each one.
Here's where you people come in: I'd like some suggestions for statues as long as they are GW related.
Thanks in advance!

Here's where you people come in: I'd like some suggestions for statues as long as they are GW related.
Assuming I'm following what you want, the first thing that springs to mind is using a statue for each of the six gods, the GW2 concept art uses that idea. It would be quite amusing to have them looking on in horror.
Perhaps six of the henchmen? I'm sure Cynn believes there should be a statue to her by now.
@Odinius: Skulpting is kinda hard. I think yours is looking quite good, but is it really that massive? It looks like it'll be hard to harden, or maybe I'm just not getting the scale of it. How big is it?
@Sura: I like that grainy look in the background, did you use a filter for it or a brush?
Stained and attached my 'leather' today. looks more like SOMETHING and less like a bunch of sticks today.
Unfortunately my support stick broke on the other one, so only one skull attached. today.
The skull....
Might need to take some black and dry brush it onto that rope?
Very special skull, btw...It fluoresces.
Most people think "fluorescent" and picture some bright green or yellow garish thing. Not these. My own special recipe...This will help that skull stand out when we fully light the thing later, blacklight on top of normal light to make the skull stand out and not blend into the lighting...
Oh, got a call from my grower today too. Can pick up my 100 pumpkins (yes...100) whenever I want...might go get a couple for the pumpkin option on the stakes as well...
Odinius: Why baking before adding the arms? Doesn't that make the joint more fragile? (never used the stuff myself...use an Oil base clay when I need to sculpt in clay, then mold and cast it)

Draken Burst – your Zombie Girl is terrifying Maybe it is just my monitor but I would like to have seen the cake more clearly, Lucky Charrlie! Ghosts vs Ghouls is a fun concept, I particularly like the colours.
Satomz, of course. - I still remember your amazing entry for last wintersday. Can’t wait to see what you come up with this year.
Penguin - Oh My! I too had no idea what a longboard was or where that process was going, it makes an exciting story as well as amazing art
Kiya – That’s looking really good so far can’t wait to see it finished.

You are not seriously under the impression that any of what you do is normal, are you? :P
Sura – I am pretty sure my screen is awful but on mine the lower foot is almost completely lost and it has such a pretty shape it is a shame. Actually both feet.
Followedbyrocks – Welcome
Odinius – Goodie I was sad you didn’t enter for Wintersday. Your last Halloween entry was wonderful so many details. BTW what do you do with them afterwards? Widowmakers idea of the six gods seems a good one.
Fred – I can’t stop laughing (in a good way). I am going to have to link everyone I know to that ^^
@Firefighter Fred: That would make an awesome embroidery, I was almost a bit disappointed that it wasn't, because it'd be bitchin' to have on the wall.
@UnOrthOdOx: A HUNDRED pumpkins? Wow. I take it you'll be carving them? What will you do with the insides of the pumpkins once you've carved them? Will your family be eating pumpkin pie for the rest of the year? XD
@Aeronwen: Thanks.
I actually uploaded my sketch yesterday but didn't get the chance to upload it, so here it is:
I'm just focusing on the Ritualist at the moment. Background will come when I actually work out what I'm going to do for the background, ha.
UnOrthOdOx: wow! How much is this gonna cost you? 100 pumpkins?! It looks worthwhile so far though
You're gonna have to be more specific...
The pumpkins are for actual Halloween, not the contest, and they are free. Or, rather, they cost labor.
The contest is going to be more or less free for me. It's all stuff I regularly have in stock. But, by the time you factor in lighting, if you were to go BUY everything, I'm guessing $1000 or so.
Halloween itself...you really don't want to know. Years of buildup of props and supplies, lighting, etc. "This year" we'll be into it over $1000, and another $500+ in consumables and food. We have 1000 people or more over between the 2 nights we're open.

I carve a couple. I'm hoping 100 is enough, we have a huge carving party at our house on the 29th (normally the 30th, but it's a Sunday which would yield no one coming around here). The neighborhood comes over and all the kids carve one/some and put them in the haunt. Nothing can beat the random creepiness.
As for the guts...That's part of the reason I get free pumpkins. Pumpkins are ravenous feeders, sucking all kinds of nutrients out of the ground...I compost all those nutrient rich pumpkins (as well as most the neighborhood's) and return the created fertilizer to the farm, along with the seeds, which they plant for next year, along with roasting and selling the extra thousands of seeds.

Placeholder Title
The wind howled in the streets of Kamadan and seemed to follow him in even the smallest corridor.
Noah had tried trick-or-treating once more but it turned out to be as futile as last year.
His father had told him that he should earn the candy and not just ask for it. “Here is a scythe. Now go fetch yourself some candy son. “ his father said.
But Noah was no fighter and did not have the money to pay for mercenary heroes.
That is how he ended up shivering in the small pathway between two houses.
Too afraid to check what had been chasing him for the last hour and too tired to even lift his head.
