I dunno... it could go either way. I guess it depends wholly on how far the workshop is away from the game launch. I guess those that make art will make art regardless, and getting onto a new game will perhaps even inspire productivity, but I don't think you can persuade most non-hardcore artists (XD) to come up with something big in the first two months after launch... I have a feeling it'd be a bit short-staffed, artistically speaking.

Well the there is a big chance a lot of them have just had their chance during the beta weekends to get to know the game. If my scedule on page1 is slightly correct the Dragonfestival workshop would be right in between beta-end and the game going live, it may well be a great way to stay connected to GW2 while not being able to play... the problem here is not knowing the exact dates on which these (end beta, game going live) happen. With that information it could well be possible to exactly plan an inbetween workshop, related to the dragon festival in GW1 and/or the release of GW2 and/or the 'goodbye' to GW1 w/e realy ... as an opening workshop, and during the 'inbetween time' it may very well be a well visited workshop, as people vent their impressions gathered during beta...

I could go for a workshop pre-launch, if the game is released in late june or early july like Arghore implied (I share his expectations). I'm definitely not going to do *anything* other than gaming once the game is actually out, but I'll have plenty of time around june and I doubt I'll be in the beta beforehand. Whether or not it's gonna happen I'm working on something GW2 related at the moment and making some tutorials as I go along. I'd have some progress pictures and the tuts to get a workshop rolling anyway.
It's gonna be hard to organize a workshop within the first two months after release, like Morag said, but it might be hard to get something going just before too. May and early june means exams or heavy coursework for a lot of students I think, or at least it does for me. Might be people are too invested in the open beta too.

AH yes, school exams, they do make may/june a tough time for part of the interested public. And i for one find school results of others a tad more important then their workshop results... especially since the end exams tend to make an important part of their grades.
If i remember correct, the exams for highschool tend to be in May, the testweeks in highschool in June, and the exams/testweeks at university tend to be in june/juli. But thats for my country, and other countries could well have different periodes.
This leads me to conclude that the only way to do a workshop during this time of the year would be to use an extended period, so that people can time their workshop efforts better. If the workshop were to last 8 weeks, starting 15 april - 15june. People can choose say a 4week period to work on the workshop every now and then, while still having most the time available to study. Maybe even an early announcement could help, so that people can start now, and post their progress shots and endresults during the workshop, to cut down time spend on the workshop and thus leave more time to study.
More input regarding exam/test weeks would be welcome though, and ofcourse opinions on whether an extended period is liked as a sollution...

Aww, I didn't get a message from Sierraa
Oh well I'll be a happy participant then ^_^
If the game goes live sometime in June, that would kinda suck for me (if it's early June, anyway). We'll be playing at the Sweden Rock Festival in Sweden and Hellfest in France in June.
(Check out this super nice advert for Hellfest ^_^
)
I know I'll be playing and playing GW2, probably won't spend my time trying to do artsy stuff about it... Unless the in-game art is so amazing that I can't help myself.
I'm still available for Workshop organizing (or any artsy-party), as always. Just fyi

A long belated comment that I've been meaning to post is, I very much like the idea of smaller themed workshops, comparable to what AJ had been doing on GW2guru for a bit. It wouldn't hurt to have smaller themed workshops to buffer the time between major events.
