Glad you guys like the sketches. Popping in here quick and then I need to run off again to work D:
Travel log assignment (block 1/4) for my illustration class: Aokigahara, Japan.
BRIEF HISTORY: Aokighara, also known as the Sea of Trees, is infamous for its association with mythological demons and its stunningly high suicide rate; 500 deaths since the 1950's. These mass deaths are said to have filled the forest with a dark energy, and imbued the trees with the angry spirits of the dead.
The forest itself is dense with trees that lay on top of rough volcanic rock. Overhead foliage is so thick that sunlight and wind are completely blocked out. Wildlife is surprisingly absent from the forest. Both the lack of wind and animal life makes the forest eerily still and devoid of life.
This drawing illustrates one of two major caves in the area, the Caves of Wind & Ice. Because it's the Cave of Wind and the forest's tie to mythology, I threw some colossal carvings of Fūjin, the wind god, on the walls.

Very atmospheric Charlie
I had never heard of this place but it is very strange
Quote:
The forest, which has a historic association with demons in Japanese mythology, is a popular place for suicides; in 2002, 78 bodies were found, despite numerous signs, in Japanese and English, urging people to reconsider their actions.

Not entirely sure. Maybe foreign travelers who visit the forest with plans to die aren't that entirely unheard of? I guess they just want to be very clear in deterring anyone since it's become such a big problem in the area.
And thanks, Marsh

Very nice Charlie! My only point of critique is that those statues looka bit boring. I think they would come a lot more to justice if you pumped up the contrast a bit, and perhaps add some blue light from whatever that blueish lightsource on the bottom is, casting on the statues. Just a suggestion

Thanks for the feedback, Toms. Been forced to kind of put this project on cruise control since I've got so much other homework. Haven't been able to spend as much time with these as I would like. I'll probably go back and touch up the cave painting once I'm certain I've got the other two out of the way.
Funny thing, I actually had to push back the contrast on the carvings because it took away from the middle ground depth. The front walls felt like they were really jam packed up in there in the foreground.
Here's the second block I just finished:
This is the idea that those who died in the forest become attached to the trees as angry spirits.
P.S. I'm not sure what's up with DA's compression quality, but I can't seem to get a non-compressed version of the image past the uploader.

you were saying you had to do 4 of these, and on GWG2 I think you said you had to do flora/fauna, food, history, and other. Im assuming this is the flora one (what with the trees :|). So do we get history next?
But this one looks very nice. I think I like this one better. The first one felt a little empty with the colour, but this one seems much better for that. I also like the emotion in this one, its much more powerful. Its much easier to connect with the story of the location in this one.

Yeah, there's going to be four blocks total. The cave drawing was food, and the forest would be flora/fauna. History will most likely be next since I haven't had the time to figure out what I'm doing for my fourth block, lol.
I also like the forest a bit more - feels a bit more gestural and some stronger points of visual focus. I like the cave painting, though I think I gave too much attention to everything, rather than giving detail to pockets of focus. Anyways, glad you like it, Death
@Marsh: I lol'd. A friend of mine actually said it reminded him of my costume from the Halloween zombie walk down here in Long Beach. Pic below related - NSFW because of fake zombiegorygoodness:

Charlie, the tree picture is very creepy (though not as creepy as your photo). I love the colours and what you have done with the light. The trees feel a bit similar though.
I can see that coming up with an idea for food related to the area might be difficult, especially a ‘Wildlife is surprisingly absent from the forest’. I wonder if anything can be made from this....
I wish I had not read this....
edit: ooops just reread your stuff and realised the cave was 'food'

Toasting to resurrect a dead bread.
Moulin Rouge roughs: India ink, tombo pencils, photoshop coloring
Moulin Rouge final poster: Mixed media of mostly acrylics and a digital print out. Slightly NSFW for the children.
Some model sketches posted on DA recently: tombo & mechanical pencils, acrylics
Character studies and rough scene development for my Ele:
Aokigahara 3/3 - Cave of Ice: don't really care for the fourth one I made, so this is the last one of the series.

Yay! Charlie has returned!
I'm really diggin' that MouLin Rouge poster. How long did it take to finish it?
And that ele looks quite formidable. Your version of an elementalist is quite unique I like the idea of the horns it gives him a demonic/shaman aura. The Aokigahara piece is quite haunting. I heard that it's a place with high suicide rates. It sounds like a place I would like to visit. Judging from most of the scenery it seems like a very spooky place. It is reminiscent to the Daniel Dociu's Dredge Caves.
Glad to see you back and Happy New Year!

Hey there, Black. Happy New Year to you as well - nice to see you again
I think the poster took me about a full day/night to finish. It was a pretty hefty size of 17x22". I finished it about a month ago, but I remember having to pull an all-nighter in order to finish it for class that day. That doesn't include all the preliminary sketches and transferring onto the illustration board.
As for my ele, I never really cared for any of the male ele armors in GW. So when the Grenth costume and Demonic Horns came out, I was pretty happy that I was able to make him look a bit regal as well as intimidating - kind of a fire construct with a human form. Once I get to building up the sketch into a rendered piece, he'll have a bit more character. Though my friend made me laugh saying my sketches reminded her of Noel Fielding:
And you're right about Aokigahara - on the front page of the thread, "Cave of Ice" and "Forest of Sorrow" have direct links to the drawings as well as information about the location. "Spooky place" is putting it lightly.
Anyways, the reason I posted all these sketches it just to show all the planning that one should do when doing a major project. A while ago I said that I'd help post some tips on how to prep for a drawing, so I suppose I'm doing a little bit of that right now. Though I suppose I'll make a separate thread for that with way more detail and insight so that it doesn't get lost in this thread.

I love the Moulin Rouge poster, the b and w version is my favourite though. Cave of Ice is very atmospheric, awesome work.

Just a silly portrait of Handsome Squidward, for fun.
@Aero: Hey there Aero, good to see you again - been a while since I last logged on. Glad you like the Moulin Rouge piece. But yeah, we'll see when I get the chance to put together a sort of guide, or whatever.
