Asuran wippie.
Restarted from the original idea. Bit more fond of this one. The golemmancer gloves are inspired from the Asuran in the GW2 trailer. Other than that, I'm really just sort of improvising. Making sure this little guy has some snazzy clothes on request of Kiya. I'll keep working on it when I get the time.

Looks promising. Though I think the golems 'glove' is a bit too eastern, doesn't really fit the picture and screw GW2 Also the idea popped my mind that the golem could carry the asure in its hand, like its carrying a ball or something, or is that too much of a cliché? Anyway, love the hands of the little guy. I think colours and lightning is gonna be great in this picture, well what do I expect, blue is my fav colour after all :3

Hmm, too eastern? Do you mean the glove itself or that little serpent head on the pedestal? If you mean the statue, it's actually a reference to the Temple of the Feathered Serpent at Teotihuacan, Mexico. Since the Asurans are influenced by Meso-American culture, I figured it'd be fitting to add some Olmec structures in there.
ART HISTORY SUPER NERD POWERS ENGAGE!
I'll end up refining it at the end so that it's not so ambiguous.

The idea did cross my mind. But then I saw this, and dropped the idea altogether.
I was also thinking of actually putting him inside the golem's chest, piloting it like a mech suit. But it obstructed a lot of the Asuran's details, so I scratched that one too.

Lol I knew it was too much of a cliché. Probably saw the picture once already and my subconsciousness thought it was being original. And about the mexican dragon, you beat me on that one. I know zero about mexican culture, maya's a lil bit, but it just looked chinese to me, but guess thats me and my obsession. I also sense that when you said statue that ment that it doesn't belong to the golem? (always nice putting assumbtions in a question form ) Cause I thought it was. I would like the idea that the golem has 1 taller arm, like a kingcrab.

Looks very nice so far! I am excited to see how you're gonna do the lighting with all that glowy things on the golem. Oh...quick question: Do you do lineart at all or just straight painting? I have the impression that you don't draw linearts before coloring.

I thought too that it was like a big kingcrab arm. Pillar should be a different color so it doesnt seem like an extension of the golem?

That it is. I'll try to be fitting in a lot of the Asuran architecture into this scene; that statue and column being part of it.

You should check out some of the Pre-Columbian art that has been discovered. A lot of it is really interesting and inspiring to look at. Here's a cutaway from the facade of that temple I mentioned. My best guess is that Teotihuacan and all the pyramids there were the main source of influence the artists used to create the Asurans.
@Raven: I do lineart when I work in traditional mediums. As for painting, I create a basic outline with the colors I'll be working with.
@Kiya: I think once I finish the golem's right arm, the confusion should be cleared up. In any case, I'll go in and put in an overlay of bronze on the architecture.

i try not to make to many "you did that and it should be this" observations this early in the game
but the asura looks a lil too....tall?
i picture the lil buggers as being about knee hight compared to the golems.
i hate the asura lol but this one is actually cute gj

I'm going to start sizing these pictures down. Due to massive size of all the pieces I've been working on, they're taking a bit more time and effort to complete. I'd like to start working on pieces that aren't so time consuming and give myself more room to jump right into other works. That and reducing the size really allows me to push the detail even farther, rather than be forced to stretch it out.
Anyways here's shot 2/4.
The background was altered after I cropped it, but you still get the overall gist of where I'm going.

When I look at the picture and the size relation of the two my mind automatically thinks he's standing on something that you don't see because of the way the pillar/post(?) dragon is in front of the picture.

I think the proportions of the asura seem off. It's like a human in asura skin. The ones we are used to seeing in-game have larger wider heads, squarer jaws with much wider mouths, and longer necks. The "waist" to their clothes seems to usually be around their chest or upper abdomen and not the human hip area. If it's belt was moved up that might help a bunch.

The proportions are definitely throwing me off a bit here. I've never really drawn characters quite like the Asura or anything so extremely non-human, so I'm guess I'm subconsciously adding in some human anatomy. Bad habit I need to break out of :x
I agree, moving that belt up towards the chest will definitely swing the anatomy around. I'm still playing around with the mouth though - can't decide whether I like this guy with a wide or small grin.

I really like how the colour scheme is distinctly different from the others ~
I think his mouth should be open enough to make those nasty pointy little teeth conspicuous
maybe his hand crackling with power
and make his eyes gleam :}
however you draw the Asura, remember that he's the main character, or he might get overshadowed (so to speak) by that Golem of his~!

The first piece I was working on had him doing sort of a maniacal "bwahaha!" laugh with all of his teeth showing.
Anyways, I was doing some character studies in between classes (which I'll post later), and I think I'll give this little guy a smirk. As for the crackling effect, that will be coming in either the next or last piece. Ugh, I wish I knew how to do flash animation. If I could, I would have this picture animated so that when he clenches his right fist, an electrical shockwave and sparks appear.

Yeah, that's one of the main reasons why I placed him at chest height of the Golem. It gives the Asura more presence as opposed to having the Golem completely looming over him.
