Final wippie. Busy week coming up, so I'm not quite sure when I'll be done. Hopefully I can finish this mid to late week.

You know Charlie, the picture seems surreal, since the army wouldnt really be arranged like that if they were actually fighting.

So instead, the men arranged seem somewhat robotic, and almost take on a ghoul-like/ghost-like quality, as if they were doing this their previous life and repeating it. All we need is for your warrior to have glowing eyes and tendrils of mist creeping out from under the helmet :P

That's an interesting way to look at it; didn't really see it from that perspective. Pretty creepy in a neat way. Right now, I'm going for the idea that they've just broken formation and leading an open charge on the Afflicted. Hopefully when I add in the remaining soldiers, it'll better portray the chaotic clash of armor.

As much as I liked the previous orderly formation of the beginning designs, the composition would have been compromised to support the standard layout of infantry, spears, bows, etc. A big warfare scene like that would be something I'd want to focus on entirely on itself.

woo .. that's powerful, Charlie ~
the mass of soldiers + heroic Iron + the overall darkness gives that cinematic feel, that something is about to happen

*smart soldiers: if I were up against the afflicted I'd want a 10' polearm too :}

I'm sure anyone would want a polearm to jab Afflicted with. I don't want that rubbish exploding in my face.

Then I stick to my original statement.. I like the moon!

& the little fire thing going on on the right side.. the brightness just makes it so pretty against all the dark. ^o^

Fire is always a nice little toss in during battle scenes. That and it also gives a nice secondary light source.

As you said, keep in mind the light source. Always focus on the area that you're lighting whether it's curved or straight-edged - both forms have very different shading planes and will appear more 3D depending on how well you treat them.

I've been experimenting with shading techniques and I've ran into one I really like. Both the linear dodge and multiply tool are very useful in creating strongly differing values according to the color you're mixing. Majority of the light and dark tones are a result of that setting.
