It is known that people of distinction choose the Norn first.
You've got me considering my Norn thief now, I can't decide if I should thank you or not for that.

Wintersday Workshop Progress
I thought instead of having a gallery somewhere else, I'll abuse my own thread for a bit, and will update this post with progress on the Wintersday workshop.
20-11-11
Idea finalised and first sketch
I want to make a digital illustration of a feisty, powerful and glamorous Dwayna, but I don't want to stick to "just" a painting. I've taken huge inspiration from a stained glass window style called Tiffany, which is a more modern take on traditional stained glass and is all about the colours. Here are two pieces I fell in love with:
http://i42.tinypic.com/2lb03h2.jpg
http://i40.tinypic.com/30t3x1v.jpg
So I want to try and present my painting in that style. It'll be a challenge to pull off but I kinda have a history of picking the hard way
Onwards and Upwards!
---------------
added some main lines for orientation. Sketch isn't finalised, I haven't quite decided what she's going to wear. I'll also probably make the lines more organic in a later version, but as I said, these are for orientation to see where the main shapes are
---------------
21-11-11
worked some more on the sketch and detailed the wings. I thought I'd go for lots of feathers, but I fear I might have overdone it... thoughts? Also not too happy about the far-left part of the hair AND I have to figure out what to have for a "background"
---------------
3-12-11
Finally had time for a little progress :]
fixed the hair and started the linework... I'm doing the lines with vectors, but I'm not yet sure whether I'll be saving myself any time with that, having to be so exact. But on the other hand, no cleaning up linearts afterwards which is a bonus. Ah well, committed now :P
---------------
hours later.... >.<
still a few mistakes with the lines that need fixing, but I'm quite happy with it so far
---------------
last update for today spent the best part of my day on my entry, need to make the most of a free day.
colours are probably a bit unexpected ok, at the moment it looks like a little girl has been let loose on a colouring book and a box of crayons XD I have a cunning plan to bring it all together though! I felt it was important to make the colours warm
---------------
22-12-11
I also have a tiny workshop update. Finished my background colouring; still unsure whether to put in all that blue, but it has to look like a Dwayna piece at some point...
---------------
Final Submission
put in highlights and colour variations, painted the face and added some more "lead"

Nice practice with the orc, though I think it could use a more work with the underlying structure of the skull - the face looks kind of wobbly. And that dragon is just too cute for the five races to unify and kill.

Charlie, you're right... it was one of those things where you sit down a couple of minutes and do something sloppy, and it looks cool when you do it, and the minute you put it away and come back to it, you see how WRONG everything is >.<
It peeved me a lot that the drawing didn't look like my character, so I decided to try again...
I'm much more happy with it this time round, especially the profile because it really does look like her. I still need to be more daring on the eyes and lips, they are much bigger ingame, and the head proportions are a bit off. It taught me something though:
I can draw faces OK if I
something else from a couple of days ago... random woman portrait practice

Morag, you know I have always been secretly jealous of you. I have seen your progression in art, and I have to say it is impressive.
Nice pencil studies, that orc looks very cool! It has a very strong expression, I can tell you took your time refining. And those pixels <3! Is it challenging doing pixels? I always wanted to try it, but never had time to.

aw thanks so much :3 I'm always a bit surprised when people say they like my work, I don't think I'm that good (not that I don't enjoy people liking what I do though ) I envy people who have the focus to sit down and get really good at one particular thing. Me, I am a professional dabbler... I do everything a bit In art class, that was always seen as a bit of a fault - you have to find your particular style, your artistic handwriting, they say. Well - my handwriting is multidisciplinary XD
Pixel work is actually a lot less mysterious than I always imagined - in a way it's like painting in that you have to think about colour and form a lot, but at the same time it's different because it's ... deconstructed. I find it fascinating! There are a lot of good tutorials on dA, just search for pixel art tutorial. I did some shading practice (called dithering in pixel art) before attempting organic things, but not a lot. I picked it up pretty fast, and it's really enjoyable - you can make small things that don't take long to finish, so it's great when you're busy. You should try it!

I see you did a larger scale pixel art this time. I really like the colours, they go together very well. Moreover, the pose seems very natural and neat. Nice one Morag!
