There is no issue here.
It only becomes an issue if you are looking for something more than a game.
The people who say they can't understand it because it's only pixels -> you defeat your own argument! It's only an image on a screen, it's not a projection of me, im not sat at home in full bonelace with a few corpses and a vat of blood (except thursdays ).
If you have an issue with the someone choosing a gender other than their real life gender for a character I'd propose it's you with the issues - why does it bother you so much - are you unable to see past the mammaries?
Like others have said did you freak out or feel gay playing tomb-raider / oni / resident evil or any other of the myriad of games / media where the lead is female.

I am a 34 year old male playing a female elementalist, oh no, I think I may be having an early-midlife crisis! What will my wife think?
Like a lot of people have said previously this game is a role-playing game. Therefore picking a character is not necessarily a reflection of the players sexuality. If I play Knights of the Old Republic as a dark jedi does that mean I am likely to want to kill somebody or perpetrate some other evil act? No, it means if I buy a game I like to play it any way I like (within the confines/restrictions of the game environment imposed by the devs).
I would have liked to see gender have an impact on the gameplay aspect.
e.g. male warriors could be stronger whilst female warriors could me more dexterous etc..this would also be another way of helping to create tactics in team play.
I have also read in other threads that some teams are more likely to accept join requests from females as opposed to males, which could be argued as being sexist, but I will leave that for another thread...

Hate to bump this thread but oh well. *sigh*
A) This really just seems like a ridiculous/troll thread. I don't know why it isn't deleted/locked.
B) The avatars are the choices we have. If they had an option to be the slightly-soiled high-heeled shoe of pregnant Rohmbeetle, perhaps I might want to select it. Or perhaps not.
C) Choices are often selected do to an nigh-on infinite number of reasons. A question could be raised as to why people like the OP create silly threads like these. As in this case, probably any number of reasons, but I'd suggest it was likely boredom and forum attention-seeking.

My main character in Lineage 2 was a female shaman, the a female human prophet. In GW, my main character is Male Ranger.
My decision to create these female char was their look. Females are way more beautifull in L2 than in GW imo... but well. Actually I loved to play these characters for their "social" life. You have to discuss, can be stupid, and your tactial mistakes are fogiven more easily.
By playing a women you send a message to other players "hello, I'm able to socialise and I'm not a leveling bot"...
So why did I choose a male ranger in gw? coz it corresponds best to my real nature... Basically, It will take me less effort to "act". plus I want to concentrate on the game, and not take as much time as is in "real" mmorpgs to socialise...
everybody plays a game as he wants. In my first mmorpgs days, I found men playing women extremly weird too... Now, I think it just adds variety and fun ^^

Why Is it?
Ok I'm sure this has been said, but I'll say it again. This is a game, why does it have to MEAN anything? There does not have to be an alterior motive behind a gender selection for a ROLE PLAYING GAME! ( Shocking! I KNOW!) Let it go, anybody with a history in roleplaying knows that certin genders of chars gravitate towards classes, even in Fantasy literature. Sure the female chars are good looking, why not, does it matter? Who knows and who cares, play the game have fun, leave the psycology out of it.

Well, the "I don't like looking at my male ranger's butt" excuse is made up because the guild cape covers most of the backside of any character. It's really weird, I've never played a female character unless I didn't have a choice. For the average teenager, looking at a female supermodel instead of a bulky mountain of male flesh is the more appealing way to go. Good for them, at least I don't have to be worried about my sexual orientation.

Hey, like a few other posts in this thread, I just perfer staring at a female bunch of pixels compared to a guys. Most of the male models in this game are ugly, and the only ones I would use are the rangers.
Anything that keeps me interested in the game longer I will do. *Shrugs* Besides, its always amusing to have a tiny little warrior woman (anyone watch Xena? Gab was hot, short, and weak, but damn, she kicked butt), beat up on some huge warriors swinging hammers around in the arena. =)

This soon after release and your already doing things to "keep you interested" ? Sounds like some people really do burn out quickly. Anyways i've never played a female character before, but this thread has me interested. My next char will be female, but im going to fully admit im male behind the keybaord. What im wondering is even if i tell them plainly im male, will i still be treated better? Its obvious females are treated better, but if im open about being male will that effect fade? or are they oblivious to the facts? I think its gonna be interesting

Try making a bald female monk with the ugliest face there is, and see if they still get treated better than the male characters..an interesting test.

I don't really roleplay, but it does annoy me when people talk about their avatars in third-person in-game. To me, people are their avatars, even if they speak about attribute points and having to do school tomorrow. So no, I probably wouldn't treat you better.
The worst group I have been in was with 3 female characters, all obviously played by very young males. One took of his armor and asked if I wanted him naked or clothed, as monsters were approaching. Another commented about the nice way his avatars breasts were bouncing during some emote.
It kind of made me wonder why I played computer games at my age...

Mimu-
SWG and lied to for 6mths by a guy playing a girl.
You wouldn't happen to have been on eclipse would you?
I know my boyfriend always plays female charecters. He has been playing a rather good female charecter on eclipse for quite awile. He has told maybe 10 folks that he is really a guy.
He made his charecters to be charecters. They are not he, they are nothing more than a avatar in a world. I imagine that if I get him to play guildwars he will be a girl here too.
I see nothing wrong with the females playing males, males playing females. How else are you even supposed to try and understand what motivates the opposite side?
As for naked dance parties (mentoned somewhere) as a means to find out who isnt a girl.
Wrong, some girls like to look at those pixels and look at the reaction it gets out of the male pixels.
I never say whatsup.. but I do say Howdy. I have often been initially seen as a guy player because..
1. I know what I am doing. Why can fellas not get that there are powergamer women and that more of us are out there then you even want to know?
2. I am direct and tend to be a leader in groups. This throws guys as well, why I have no idea. Most guys know women can lead, and that women understand tatics.. well at least they should!
The one that gives me away as a woman? Worrying about the party members a bit more than I guess others do. As in , finding out if folk are really going to play right now, helping out with out of game things(tech support oddly enough), and last but not least, tending to allow items to go to others without much fuss. (not as much of a issue in this game).

No..I've never played SWG.
It's not the fact he's a man that annoyed me, as I really do not care about the gender of the person 3000 miles away from me.
I treat both male and female players exactly the same, and do not give away free stuff to women any more than I would a man.
It's just the fact that he continued to lie for me for over half a year of friendship...
I suppose I was too trusting, but it did make me angry.

I don't think it should matter because it's just a game, but I just personally choose a male character because it is easier to envision that it is actually you out there in this huge world kicking ass everywhere.....
....whereas, when playing as a female - unless you have some serious issues - I seriously doubt you'd want to picture that character as being YOU....

In answer to the first post, we cant look at women in real life because its "disgustingly perverted", or something like that.
But seriously, It shouldnt matter what type of character you play. Also, Why would perverts pay money to play a game to stalk little children ? thats what aol chatrooms are for ^^.And, even if you think someone is gay, it doesnt matter, because you can't do anything about it ! stupid free will laws ^^

No matter what type of RPG it is, if it has a forum, this is brought up by some immature fool. It's bad enough when the game discussed is a PnP RPG, but a CRPG? An MMORPG? (OK, CORPG or whatever they are calling it lol). Get a life.
Unless you are in GW cybering with people, there is no reason to ever ask someone their sex. Therefore there is no reason to care whether the teeny girl elementalist in your group is IRL a 6'7" 280 lb. bar bouncer from Detroit. If it makes you uncomfortable that the girls in the game may not actually be girls IRL, YOU are the one with the problem. It is a GAME.
Think about it this way. How many girl NPCs are there? Now, how many of those do you suppose were actually programmed, designed, or scripted by a female IRL?
