Medieval Re-Enactors
Are there any out there, or anyone interested in this?
I've been searching all over the net looking for Colorado Reenactment/Recreator associations. The only thing I've found is the SCA (www.SCA.org). While they might be the largest and most active of associations, I'm not too fond of the wooden swords wrapped in ductape.
What I'd like to be able to do is find something along the lines of say Medieval Times (the restaurant and entertainment show). They utilize metallic weapons, but with practice they limit the number of injuries.
I'd personally love to go toe to toe with someone, bearing down on them with a medieval style sword, sporting a shield and armor, and hear the clash of metal on metal. I think that would be the thrill in itself.
Like I mentioned, I've been looking for something along these lines, but if I can't find it, I may start it up myself. I'm sure there are others that would enjoy some safe, realistic, middle age (not to be confused with years in age ) combat.
If anyone else currently does some sort of Re-creation or Re-enacting, post here your links, and stories.

I practice Yagyu Shin-Kage Ryu Kenjutsu, which works with live blades, often in displays of tameshigiri. I do have blade scars on my arms and shoulders, and one or two on my legs and such, but boy is it fun...
Hardcore training though. Torture is almost the deal.

The states makes it quite hard, lawsuits abound and therefore hamper what goes on.
In Britain I used to take part in both LARP and historical reenactment. Even the larp weapons in the Uk were more 'realistic' than the SCA weapons stateside. I ran a site in Borstal Kent in a napoleonic fort. And used to make the latex/fiberglass weapons and armor for sale.
Having a limited budget will also seriously contrain you. Unless you happen to know a weaponsmith or blacksmith. Buying "swords" from cheap sources means they are going to be cast, which means they are very brittle and won't last you very long at all.
Chaimail, and scale mail you can make yourself within reason although both of those are time consuming affairs and HARD on your hands and fingertips.
Fights with live steel are heavily scripted affairs. Every move, every step is predetermined. Generally speaking only 'duels' are done using live steel. battlefield skirmishes are much mor elimited since there are so many forces in play, keeping it safe is hard.
IMHO you would have a far better time, and find alot more people if you stuck with fiberglass and foam latex weaponry. Safe and it means you can have free-form fun, instead of acting out a choreographed sequence.
You can look up "latex weapon" in google and you will be surprised at how good they can look.
Although as far as I know, SCA does use live steel. It may be down to the individual kingdom(group).

I've been doing rattan and live steel combat for years.

Give the forums at www.armourarchive.com a look while you're at it. They cater to SCA, LARP, REN, and LH.
In addition, if you have any questions about the SCA, I can probably help. I'm our local groups Knight's Marshall (kinda like a head coach/trainer) and a kingdom marshall (kinda like a certified referee). Our groups website is www.blakrose.org
