Baldurs Gate/Morrowwind....
Let me preface this statment by saying I totally dig GW. That said, I totally dug the BG/ IWD series of games and absolutely HATED morrowwind. I, however, see elements of both games here. I can deal with those morrowwind elements cuz this is just a superior game in all respects. glad i found it.

It's very confusing, too big, and hard to follow along with, bur Elder Scrolls is still really fun. That damn guy falling from the sky the first time scared me though o_o;.
Anyway...

Lol and then you pick up his book and cast that spell then you jump. You end up traveling like 50 miles then jsut fall to the groud and die.
I think when you say that you find elements of both games in Guild Wars, that anyone can say that about any MMORPG or regualr RPG. They all have the same purpose.....big world, lots of people, and long as hell Quests.
And they are all fun

Morrowind and Daggerfalls have potentials to become the best RPG of all time, with their open-endness. But IMHO they failed on two crucial parts: all attributes/abilities are digitized and minions/monsters stay at same level. As a result, you have great time in the beginning, but at mid to late game it lost its challenge and all level-up and great weapons become pointless.

lol I loved both Daggerfall and Morrowind but Daggerfall could get annoying when you are getting far in an extra huge dungeon then you fall through the floor to your death or get stuck on a wall and can't get off.

I'd get Oblivion but my computer couldn't possibly handle it, and I don't have an Xbox so I will just have to wait. I want to play Elder Scrolls again sometime soon and just have fun.
Random note about it, I got stuck in a cave once with rats, but there was like this fire demon in there. It WOULD NOT let me back out where I came in at. Somehow I was killed and I had God mode on, yes, I cheated in Elder Scrolls, but I never got far in it due to how far you had to go and how confused I was on where I had to go in the first place.
Meh, it is fun and now that I am actually older, not sure how long Elder Scrolls came out, I need to actually give it another go now that I have patience for this more.

A good RPG tickles my fancy in the same way that a good book does. I ended up not liking Morrowind all that much simply because it was way too open ended, and didn't really appear to have any real story to tell most of the time. Some people complain about some RPG games because they're too linear, but to me a good game should "read" like a good book, and most of it should tie together in the end. Too much of Morrowind seemed irrelevant and not tied into anything at all. I saw one fan review the game saying, "The game had no soul", and I can understand the sentiment -- the game was big, but seemed somehow hollow inside. I still have it installed, but I haven't played it in ages -- I tried getting into it twice, I really wanted to like the game, but in the end I never really did.

Everything in Morrowind is tied into the lore of the land and there is not one thing you cannot get involved in whether its a story from a book or a rumour on the street. That was that games biggest flaw. In order to understand what the hell was going on you had to be completely drawn into to the atmosphere, and want to learn every bit of lore, otherwise it would completely pass you by.
Extremelly harsh at the beginning, unless you enjoy that part . Everything you do seems feeble and ineffective, and the world is vast, unforgiving, and absolutly packed with an insane amount of possbilities, if only you knew how to unlock them.
And thats the key, unlocking the potential of Morrowind requires that the player attempts to craft out their own herroic storyline from scratch, for only then will the land of Morrowind beckon you in

Morrowind require a investment that not all players are willing to commit, nothing wrong with that but if start to really read all those books we get a idea of how vast the game world is.
Problem is Morrowind is set in a particular region that is alien like even to the rest of the continent so players might feel unconfortable, also its open ended nature and free roaming can make people lost in there.
Even I that played Daggerfall had problems with fitting into the game world at start.

I love Morrowind; unfortunately never played any of the other Elder scrolls series but I will get Oblivion eventually. But I do also agree Morrowind has failings. My big problem with it is that you can't do much until you level up so you spend a lot of time just levelling... and then yes, there is little challenge. Also I just find it hard to keep track of all the quests in it. But I love the fact you can go wherever you like whenever you like, and I love searching around for hidden items or figuring out a cool new enchantment for my weapon.

Uh huh. Which is more or less what I was saying. I was refering to things being tied into the plot, and instead they're tied into the lore. Background and atmosphere are required for good fiction, but they're no substitute for plot. The game was very high on atmosphere but very low on plotline. Lore should reveal itself through the unfolding of the plot, it should not be something that requires research, unless said research is itself part of the main storyline; the plot itself should expose you to and draw you through the lore. Check out any good fantasy series: you don't need to read the Encyclopedia of Pern or Amber or the like to get steeped in the lore of those worlds, the lore is revealed through the unfolding of the plot. You shouldn't need to understand the background of a game to get into it, but you should be well educated in the background of the game by following the story it tells. If Morrowind even has a story to tell, it takes far too long for it to get around to letting you know it. I felt like the authors put a lot of work into developing a background, a world, and a game engine, then forgot to actually write the game that takes place in it.

And that's the problem. Like I said, what I look for in a good game is similar to what I look for in a good book. What is the story the author is trying to tell? When I want to craft my own story from scratch, I use OpenOffice Writer for that. A game or a book someone else has written needs to tell me it's story, or I'll just forget it entirely while I go off to write my own.

I have that game, and the expansions. I have gotten to the 4th town. I have doubled back nearly 900 times. Too much to take in. I enjoyed it for about 50 minutes, but there are so many things you can pick up, or NEED to pick up that I became overwhelmed.
I even dickked around with the cheats to hold infinite stuff, to see how much I could carry.
Lemme tell ya, 500 crab meats will make you sick just thinking about it
