Now that's a hard smack upside the head!
I heard it all the way over here.
I would never consider Green Day, true punk.

lol me and my bf just decided greenday are a weird mix of punk/rock/pop. Thats gotta hurt, though I think true ownage would be along the lines of 'oh yeah, you're those guys... your music sucks.'
but hey, greenday are cool

"I didn't have a clue who they were. And they're not punks."
Statements like that are so utterly pointless. I wonder if I could profit off of making bumper stickers that said "Punk Rock's Not Dead - It's Just Beating A Dead Horse!" Because what it amounts to is a lot of different labels that fall under one all encompassing umbrella - college rock, alternative, emo, ska, etc - all seem to have some affiliations to the 'punk' label. And what you end up with is a lot of kids that don't like to share.
Bands are only good so long as they're living out of a van, trying to make money off of their vinyls. The moment anyone else has heard of them, they're sellouts, and not cool to listen to anymore. For people who so adamantly protest that it's 'all about the music' they certainly don't give a damn about the artists. They're more concerned about their own 'scene' and their self important posturing. Saying something like "They're not punk" is the equivalency of saying "Look at me. I'm in your face and edgy." Does it even matter?
I'm a fan of bands like Bad Religion, No Use For A Name, Lagwagon, Strung Out, Tsunami Bomb, etc. I find a lot to appreciate or relate to, but at the same time, i've never walked around giving society the finger or pushing old ladies down the stairs with a clothes-pinned leather jacket and neon pink mohawk. I guess that means i'm not punk either. But then again... when one of the core messages that has always been made so vehemently clear - that of individuality - gets forsaken for what other people think 'is' or 'isn't' ... then what's the point?

I dislike Greenday because I made the HUGE mistake of actually buying one of their CDs. If I didn't buy it, I would have no problem with Greenday at all except that they are played way too much on the radio...

Gee, this man has reincarnated many a conversation I have had, it is like he ripped my own inner monologue and tossed it into the forums, you get a healthy thumbs up!
Plus, I call bullshit on john Q punkband saying he has never heard of Green Day. Like come on, "I haven't heard of you guys, but incidently upon first sight of you, you are not punks". Oh please, the only thing keeping them from being punks is their success.
I will say one bad thing about green day... american idiot blows.

hahaha... that's pretty funny. to tell you the truth, Green Day isn't very punky, and I don't like most of their stuff anyway.

Green Day went from sorta-punk when they first came out to pop/punk. I still like them, but American Idiot (the newest) is by far their worst CD and it makes me sad sometimes at how good they were and how they're slowly drifting away from their roots. They're fall isn't as bad as say, Blink 182 going from punk to emo (god i hate them for that....), but still they went total mainstream. When your videos are on VH1 there is something wrong.

what celeb doesn't do that? thats why i have no respect for any celebrity (unless i were to meet them and find they really are themselves). And on the whole 'you're not punks thing'... i find it sad everyone has to categorise themselves. as spooky said, just coz you listen to something doesn't mean you have to live it too. I like most music... but you don't find me dressing 'punk' or acting 'poppy'... it's the difference between, say, a skater that wears baggy clothes coz he actually likes them and a skater who wears baggy clothes because 'thats what skaters do'.
oh and i think it is possible that he hadn't heard of them (though unlikely with his punk statement) simply coz although they're a bit more popular now here in the UK, back about 5 years ago although everyone know of the odd song of theirs, few people had a clue they even had a cd out... only way i knew was because my friend was obsessed with them and had about 3 of their albums.

Now I do agree good music is hard to find today, but I do believe that it was the music industry that started dressing like this to begin with, not the 16 year old kids. It's called the media, kids do what the celebs do.
I personally think lyrics ruin music, but hell, I like a good Mudvayne once in a while to...

Hahaha, one of the greatest things I've read all day. Cheers.
Never like Green Day...at all, I hear enough 15 year old sort dribble from the "misunderstood" teens themselves, who needs 30 yr old guys talking about it as well? Pfft!
