If its for the pve part of the game and if you like to play solo I would recommend Evil Islands.
This is a game from 4 years ago. Its mission based like GW. Maps are unlocked by completing missions. You can create your own items with materials you find. Sometimes its better to avoid fighting and use some differend 'skills'
The online game is played on user servers, so that may be dissapointing (and after 4 years not many players will be around anyway)

Yes, many newer 'big company' on-line games have fees - but (obviously, hehe) not all.
It may seem riddiculous but the company has to pay a lot to keep those servers running all the time and make updates and all that stuff. I personally don't think it's unfair - I may not like it, but not unfair. Just depends.
I remember once a breakdown of where the $50 paid for a game gets divided up into - and not all that much of it could actually be considered true profit (ie, that doesn't have to be put straight back into the business in order for them to stay in business).
Anyway....since no one else put it up yet...here's a site that has a lot - some are old, some are outdated...but it's still a huge list. Have fun.

If you're NOT really set on on-line gaming Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 (KOTOR) might fill the bill - they're good lite RPG's that have a lot of emphasis on fighting/combat.

www.anarchy-online.com
That is free at the moment (until end of january), and if you enjoy trying it out from a Client Download (700Mb for just Anarchy Online, 1.4G for all Anarchy games), the expansions are only $/€10 and then as low as $/€7.99 a month.

If you dont mind the "grind" or the monthly fee, Just try Lineage 2
or something like that. The monthly fee is really fair if you look at
all the servers, updates, websites, support teams, etc. that are
constant. Besides Many of those free MMORPG are just not as
high quality. I personnaly preffer paying the cost and enjoy a well
done game. All the free ones I've played always seem to lack something.

Shamble, Anarchy Online has all of that. Even attackable bases. Thats if you want to pay a few bucks, but its an amazing game really.
