And definitely not the Death Metal that my roommates been listening too.. BLAAAHH... I have the largest headache right now, nothing but screaming for hours.
I swear, these people realized early on in their careers that they couldn’t sing, so they just decided that "Hey!, I can just scream like a freeking moron for hours and people wont realize that I can't sing!"
I’m really starting to think that this is the case too, why paint a freeking red dot on a white canvas if you could paint a beautiful realism portrait. I swear these people are just lacking talent and industry excretes them into a genre

I happen to hear many "singers" who sound worse than the throat cancer inspired death-meatal vocalists. Hmmm, screaming all the time sounds like what is refered to as "screamo".

Opeth, without a doubt. No one sounds like Opeth but Opeth, and anyone who can get an 11 minute song to flow perfectly, remain melodic, and be totally devoid of wankery (I love Dream Theater, but Petrucci's solos have gotten terribly scalar and repetitive)

Not necessarily. There are some singers who do growling, death metal vocals who can sing amazingly well on top of it. Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth has an absolutely demonic growl, but also a very soft, sorrowful singing voice. Bjorn 'Speed' Strid from Soilwork also goes from growling and shouting during the verses of their songs to singing quite well during the choruses. The growling is part of the style for a lot of these bands. They use it because its the most aggressive vocal delivery that can be mustered, even if you're essentially throat shredding. It does take some vocal stamina to keep that up for a whole show and still talk at the end, though.
