Actually this is very easily explained - It is an alternate timeline based on our universe, the difference being that our own inherent violent nature has been magnified. Somewhere out there is a twin of each one of you who's violence comes to the forefront of their personality.
In that alternate universe, the strong survive and leadership is chaos as there is always someone plotting to kill the "current" king of the hill.
They even made a Star Trek episode about it!

Soylent Green was an old black and white movie about how people were taken away to a "special resort" when they reached a certian age, and the only food aviable to the public is a substance known as "Soylent Green." I know you're not gonna be able to find it on film so I'll just tell you what happens, via a line from the movie:
"Soylent grün ist ein Produkt aus Menschenfleisch!!!!"
Roughly translated:
"Soylent green is made out of people meat!!!!"

Well it wasn't black and white. It came out in the early 70s starring Charleton Heston and Edward G. Robinson. It's about the future where overpopulation has taken it's toll on civilization. The government dispenses foodstuffs in market - Soylent Yellow, Soylent Red and Soylent Green - supposedly made of plankton. Charleton Heston is a cop investigating a murder - which takes him into the secret about soylent green. It's a classic.
His famous last words in the film are "Soylent Green is people!"
It's available on DVD.

Why would I think this? Well, standing in Droknar's Forge while waiting for a friend to show up, I found myself taking a good long look at the moon. No question about it... that's our moon! How can this be... unless...
Could it be... that as countless ages passed... that "Terra" became known as "Tyria"?

Well i have to give you major props for finding that. but this also might reveal that you have way to much time on your hands. However when i start to notice things in games that are out of the ordinary it is usually a sign that i should stop playing and go to bed....

ok ok this may sound a bit weird but read it ascalon whas a real city and yes it whas destroyed
Ascalon
A titular see of Palestine whose episcopal list (351-930 or 40) is given in Gams (p. 453). It was one of the five chief cities of the Philistines (Josue, xiii, 3). Its location, on the sea-coast between Gaza and Jamnia made it a stronghold, and as such it was held by the Arabs after their conquest of it in the seventh century. The city was taken by the crusaders, but was destroyed, in 1270, by Sultan Bihars, and its port blocked up to prevent the place ever again falling into Christian hands. Its extensive ruins still remain, and present a scene of mournful desolution.
whell whell enough proof the sultan is the charr king whe where the crusaders

The soylent green stuff was really funny.. Seems it's a real underground running gag. From music (some german electro/goth band had a song that went: Soylent Green ist Menschenfleisch Menschenfleisch Menschenfleisch..) to games (Warcraft 3 Trolls crying: "Soylint Blue is made from Trolls") I just love it when it appears somewhere.
Thanks pal, you made my day...
