Default english = american????????

i was watching tv today and there was a program about the english language
(yes i actually stopped playing gw for an hour)
they was trying to tell people that the name of english should be changed to american. does anyone here actually think thats stupid because i think its just an attemt by a group of people to try and seperate their language from where it first came from to make their history look more american by removing english involvement.

In america we, commonly speak "American English" which, is in some aspects not as complex as basic english, and in others, much more complex.

Before you comment on the way other people look at the english language, you might want to brush up on yours.

Lol "American English" is slowly becoming more along the lines of "Ebonics." British English sounds so much more... educated.

i think the english language and the british empire has done wonders for the world. because of this language and technology the world runs a lot smoother than what it would of done if everyone had their own language. i just dont understand why they want to change the languages name and alienate it from the rest of the world.

i understand american english basically as english with a different accent and changed language techniques. that is bound to happen as it does in all english speaking countrys as language does evolve to fit the needs of new technology. and the countrys seperation means they evolve in different ways. but as american english is hardly different from english i see no need to change its name in america for the next couple of centurys.

for example french evolved from latin but they are now two different languages so it is relevant to change the name of the language

If they ever changed the name, I would still say I speak English rather than American.

I always thought english was just a language and there were American, British, and any other versions that could be understood between each other. I'm actually surprised people are focusing on this issue when there are so many other juicy ones out there. Like the debate going on about what to teach in schools about our origins. Guess someone has to keep the fire burning on the oddball stuff hehe.

Speaking of languages, I have always wondered why some assign a gender to nouns. Why is this?

i consider "american english" more of a subtle dialect of the "original" english (and by subtle i mean small differences apart from the accent)

just like french up here in quebec, it isnt your traditional french from france, its a bastardized version of it with some english thrown in, at times refered to as "la joale" (the proper spelling of that word escapes me at the moment :| )

Arturo02, most Latin-root languages do this. There are just so many infinitives, verb forms, and objects to describe that the simplest way to do that all, for them anyway, was to subdivide into Masculine and Feminine forms as well.

This argument is rather idiotic because it is the English language and we all are speaking in different English dialecs. Once the dialec becomes removed enough from the root language does it become classified as a new language.

Latin -> French, Spanish, Portugese, Italian
Germanic -> English

This is the current standard language root theory I was taught in Spanish, applying only to languages that developed in Europe. Of cource, all of these languages mixed in varying degrees and it can be noted as so be seeing so many conjugates in each language.

Only differances that I'm aware of in the American English language from the English Language is that Favourites are Favourite, fags arn't cigarettes and if your pissed your drunk.

American + English = Amerlish?

i say they just change their native language to leet speek.. just to confuse the hell out of old people

I also demand that canada gets their own because its different from the american's version.. they say "huh?" we say "eh".. clear diffrence

What many Americans are currently speaking isn't a language at all; it's just ebonics.

I can still understand someone who speaks "British-English". When I no longer have this ability, that is when I will concede that we need two separate languages

thanks for the clarification. I had a feeling it had something to do with trying to give it some structure as a easier basis for learning the language.

well we (america) have capitilized it. and i prefer to learn a few more words, than to say that sandals and boots are the samething. im not sure if english is the most difficult, think the chinese have a certain chracter for every single word , but im sure english has the most broad range of words.

~*(EDIT)*~ also sarus i that the little feret of the movie "space troopers" or something? im sad to say he was the best actor in that movie.

Anyone recall "freedom fries"?

Greek and Latin are the basis for modern languages for the most part, so calling English 'American' would be nothing more than some politico-social scheme for some asstard fundamentalist collective of people over 35 who have an innate need to bitch and moan because they have nothing else to do.

RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO that.
