What turned people off to Mac's so much?
What turns people off to Macs so much?
Is it the slanderous "switch to Mac" commercials? The "shiny" OS that’s accessible to computer illiterate people? The compatibility problems and lack of software/ games? Is it the forcing you to buy Mac products to upgrade?
I really think that Mac's wouldn’t have gotten such a bad wrap with the PC people if Macintosh wasnt so arrogant about it. Although im not to thrilled with Microsoft, Citing windows problems in commercials that haven't happened in the last 2 window OS systems is NOT a good way to get PC people to convert. I used to get so frustrated with those commercials, the Macs at my school actually crash more then my PC rig at home. Saying that Macs don’t crash is complete BULLCRAP. Although through forcing me to use Macs in the computer labs in my school I’ve come to tolerate Macs just as well as any other computers, and at least from a design perspective they seem to work as well as PC’s do. And I’ve actually started to like Some of the Mac features. I like the eject button on the keyboard although I think they should put one on the front of your case as well. I also like the volume keys. I actually reach for them all the time on my home PC accidentally iTunes is actually a pretty good Ap and so is toast. I actually use iTunes on my computer at home because of the easily accessible playlist features
And to all those people who say "If your serious about Design/ Art you need to own a Mac!" This is just complete crap.. Adobe Photoshop and Adoble Illustrator and Adobe Indesign works just as well on a PC and i belive to be even better.. You cant scroll through the fonts with the middle mouse button on a Mac and this frustrates me to no end when your working with a large number of fonts.
To counter this, all the people who say that Macs cant multitask. I havent actually ran into to many problems with this, I usually multitask all the time with the Mac's at school. I dont run into to many problems.
Although I like some of the Mac features, some of the "innovative" crap that the Mac puts out is really reaaly STUPID.
Like the SINGLE button mouse.. I wonder what the design team at Mac was thinking with this one "Hey i have an idea! Lets get rid of the 2 core functioning buttons on the mouse that people use ALL the time just to make the mouse shiny! Damned be scrolling! And lets make then hit the alt button whenever they want to use the secondary mouse button!"
Or the taking the ejection button off the CD drive where you actually have to get the CD out and put it on the keyboard to frustrate PC users to no end!
Or the crap sphere Macs that are impossible to take apart and upgrade and you can buy a crappy coustom table for just purely for appearance.. I mean common.
Or the crap iMacs that you can plug in and with the crappy little mouse that you can barely hold in your hand. I mean common how often do you have to move your computer somewhere. Once every couple of months? I can set up my computer in about 3 minutes.
If you own a Mac don't feel bad, whenever i have to use another computer i feel better working on a mac just for the fact that they are standardized, so i feel like im on the same computer wherever i go. I change computer labs all the time at my school, so i find a little comfort. Although purely for preference reasons I will chose PC for my rig at home.

Why don't people like macs? Most people grow up on a Windows OS and when they attempt an apple one it's just mass confusion. Also not many programs/games are available for it.

I agree I grew up with Windows and i probably would never have liked some of the mac features if I werent forced to use it for two years. They work fine if you want to listen to music and watch movies and design with.. But if you want to play games or if you want some more advanced OS or program options.. Then mabey not

These days, there is no such thing as a bad OS, only an inappropriate one.
This was not always the case. Dear god, who was responsible for OS/2?

I'll refer to Windows as PC, because that term gets thrown around so easily now.
First thing I should mention. I'm a proud owner and user of a Mac. I've been using a Mac since I was three. Only a couple of years ago did I give in to the temptation, but I still use my Mac whenever the chance comes up. Say I want to play Escape Velocity (the greatest game ever created), I can only do that on my Mac. Well that is pretty much it anymore.
While lots of the reasons people hate Macs are true (Single button mouse, cost more, simplistic OS, no games), lots of them aren't. Some of those things have perfectly good reasons behind them too.
"They crash constantly" - They aren't PC's. You can't do the same things. But any system put to it's limits will crash. Most people using a Mac haven't discovered the fact that they can change how much RAM to allow certain programs to use, a vital skill to have. While they can't do some of the multitasking that PC's can do (not always true), that is just in random circumstances. All of those charts and tables of data and leaning towards the system that they advertise, they hardly say anything at all.
"They don't play good games" - That is partly because it is easier to code with the current languages on a PC. If there was a language native to Mac (which there are) then games would come out in that (which they have.)
"They cost more" - With quality parts they have to have higher prices. With the higher price you get a computer that lasts longer. I have an old Mac Classic and it probably runs better than a PC of equal age. Macs don't grow obsolete as fast as PC's do. A PC can become obsolete so much faster than a Mac.
They also cost more because they generally have higher clock speeds. Have you ever wondered why when the box says "2.2Ghz!" it actually clocks at something like "1.6ghz?" I know I have... I distinctly remember seeing a PC with a high advertised processor speed and a low price, and a Mac with a much lower advertised processor speed and the same price. It turns out the Mac outperformed the PC in tons of situations. I know I said that those charts and tables of information lie, but I'm pretty sure it is okay to believe those charts and tables when you do random tests yourself.
Of course there are a few things I can't explain about the Mac compared to the PC. Why not use a multi-button mouse (finally they figured it out though)? Why not make the computers easily upgradeable (They can be upgraded, just not very easily at all. Mine required a soldering iron and lots of luck.)?
But then again there are the things that Mac made huge. Ipods are generally the first thing that come to mind when people think of MP3 players. Ipods weren't even the first one to come out, yet they are massively popular. Itunes is a top-notch program that is incredibly popular. Again, it wasn't anywhere close to the first to come out, but tons of PC users even use it now. I remember the day when the download page had Mac as the default download (its a sad day isn't it?).
I know what you are thinking now. "Wow what a stupid Mac user. He's one of those losers that sits around in Starbucks wearing one of those French hats and sipping a 10 dollar cup of coffee while hugging his Mac."
Probably you are thinking. "Your arguements are terrible and you don't back them up with any information and you suck at persuading people and you aren't Matlock and I'm critical of everything you say because I've never tried to use a Mac before and my friends told me that they found this cool link on the internet about how bad Macs are."
Ok so maybe I generalized a little bit, but I honestly hear crap like that every time I open my mouth about the Mac. So don't even try to tell me how bad a Mac is. I've heard it all. I've experienced it all. And I can still come up with more things bad about a PC. One of the bigger ones being certain things called "viruses", "worms", and "spyware." Fellow Mac users out there, I know that you might not have experienced these before, and some of you may not know what they mean, but these are things that happen one time in about every (WARNING, MADE UP FACT COMING UP!) eighty-thousand PC occurances. Thats just something I like to say to people when they complain about how crappy Macs are.
Ok, by now you are all yelling at your screens and saying, "SHUT UP D4NOWAR! WHOEVER YOU ARE!" So I'll stop writing my little "book" here.
Before I stop though, here is my current favorite shirt. Maybe some of you will get it.

You mean that the single button thing is standard? :-|
Wow i had no idea, how can this possibly be? It DRASTICALLY decreases your performance and navigation of an OS.

I beg to differ, they go obsolete just as fast. We constantly replace our Mac computer labs.. Some of the newer labs are nice.. The old ones just arent cutting it. I found PC's to be amazingly upgradable, Ive upgraded every part of my computer at least once, some parts more then once.. Video Card like 3 times, same with hard drive. Replaced ram and motherboard.. Bah audiocard is the same heh.. but who cares about that.

You actually had to solder it?! My upgrade required unscrewing a few things, popping them out of the slot and popping the new one in and screwing it in. There is no excuse at all to have to solder it, except bad motherboard design.

Im downloading Itunes5 as we speak
i dont know how it differes from 4 :P I wish they would have given me an upgrade message.

You know how many spyware and virus infections ive gotten in the last year? None.. Thats right zero and im a heavy porn watcher ;D. If you take care of your PC youll get none. I use Avast antivirus and websweeper.. Avast is great.. Stops viruses cold, catches them far before they can infect. My fathers PC? about 300 different spywares

I was doing this on an iMac, of course I had to solder. iMacs were blessed with the ability to only upgrade the RAM. What? You want to upgrade the video card? Nope. You can't. I still love the thing to death though.

My PC is also free of viruses and whatnot, but just think of the average user of a PC. They see the low price and they jump on it. I can guarantee you that the majority of people that have a PC don't take care of theirs like they should.
I really should run checks every 2 weeks but I usually end up checking every month. But then again, I refuse to install Norton or use any firewalls that aren't already there. All they do is contol me. I like to have a certain amount of control over my computer, but I'm straying from the Mac topic here. I actually like Macs. And I want this thread to turn into something smart instead of what I can see happening by tomorrow.

The reason why people say that is because Macs are what the design/art industry uses. And it is a big reason why Apple stayed alive for so long. Now they have Ipod, so they are good to go.

*shudder* Norton.. Avast is great.. Automatically updates every day, all you get is popups when a virus is detected, wich i want. Very minimal.
Microsoft is really pretty bad. They only update their software with new features if they absolutely have to. Like when firefox started to put up some real competiton to IE they introduced some new features.
I suppose the average windows user really has a spyware and virus ridden PC zombie.

They are more user friendly so the art people can start cranking out their art-making without learning too much about the computers themselves.

It really doesnt matter at all what you use.. The capatability between Mac and Windows Adobe products is amazing. I routinely transfer files from my Adobe Photoshop/ Illustrator/ Indesign over to the Macs at school with no problems at all. And im currently at a internship for a design firm that uses PC's, they all have the dual screen thing and its sweet .
I think that the industry uses Mac's in most cases is because of the standardization of it all. The Art Insitute of Pittsburgh uses mostly all macs. Except for the 3Dstudio max labs that Macs cant operate.

I've never used a Mac, but I have many friends who own one and swear by them...I'd definitely get one if I had the extra cash. We're still praying for a GW Mac client...but until then, we'll be playing Neverwinter Nights and Warcraft III. We're currently playing NWN cross-platform...Windows, Mac, and Linux. Right now, we can only dream of doing that with GW.
OK, I'm done going off-topic (come on ANet, please give us a Mac client!).

I used to use Macs for general arts purposes, and then I realized..."Wait, why the RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO am I still using Macs for art (which is about all they were good for in the first place) when PCs have matched if not surpassed the capabilities in that area?"
Also, the setup I've got here would've cost a SHITLOAD more if it were a mac, and it probably would've been a downgrade as a whole. The one main reason I could see to get a mac would be if you ONLY wanted to do art related work, and you didn't want to do anything else except maybe general Internet related shit. Because...who the hell would waste their time with viruses for macs? I guess macs are a bit safer in that regard. But who really cares?
