My question is, why?

The simple answer? Security. They don't want to have their view of the world, or anything in it, threatened. They can't stand the idea that they might be wrong, or that someone else may have a different opinion than them. They NEED to believe that they are right, that nothing else could possibly be correct, and that no one else could ever think otherwise. And they'll do anything to stay "safe" in that belief.

Actually, it goes along the lines of:

The cost of stupidity is the eventual downfall of the human race as someone already said. There is this natural one-upmanship amongst people. It can either be productive when by challenging each other and sharing information, both sides improve and profit, or there is the dark side. That is when you let someone stay stupid instead of sharing knowledge and making a mutual profit. Without challenge your own progress stagnates and so on. You die off.

I think human intelligence is a mixed blessing due to our capacity to be developed by ideas alongside genetics and our environment. The cost of human development is that during the process, people become shaped by defective memes and genes that naturally seek to not only survive but proliferate.
There are ways to aid those who have genefic deficiencies but there currently isn't a science devoted to curing stupid ideas.

I agree, Sanji. While human intelligence has done things like cure polio and created airplanes (and any other fabulous invention you can think of). It has also been abused and mistreated by people like Oprah, who insinuated that, because she couldn't run into a Hermes purse store in Paris AFTER closing, she was being rejected because she wasn't "classy enough" (probably true), not rich enough (definitely not true), and because she was black (oh for Pete's sake---EVERYONE'S seen "The Color Purple").
So...intelligence is up to the holder. It can be used for enormous good whether for mankind in general or in one's own family more specifically. It can also be used for ill...Charles Manson anyone?

Stupid people make stupid decisions. Stupid decisions get people killed. Rinse and repeat.
The problem with idiocy is that the amount grows exponentially. In comparison, the amount of intelligence in the world grows very slowly. And the problem with intelligent people (scientists) is that what they create and think up eventually falls into the hands of a moron who cannot grasp the scope and consequences of his actions.

"Stupid people do stupid things,
Smart people outsmart each other;
Then themselves." - System of a Down
This is inherently true. You build up your knowldedge base, become RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOy and arrogant, and get knocked down by a wrong answer. The weak ignore their mistakes and stay in ther blissful ignorance until the ramifications overwhelm them and they either die or snap to and then die. The strong get back up, build up, and repeat. It may seem like a crappy process but without it, nothing would get done.
It is better to make a mistake and learn from it then to make no mistake at all.

id·i·o·cy ( P )
n. pl. id·i·o·cies
1 - Extreme folly or stupidity.
2 - A foolish or stupid utterance or deed.
Psychology. The state or condition of being an idiot; profound mental retardation.

My usage in terms of previous posts, meaning those I feel CHOOSE to remain idiotic, is an opinion I lace into the def.

So in escence you are asking what do I and everyone else feel about those who wish to remain ignorant?
Taking this to be the issue central to your post I have the following comments to make.
I cannot say how annoying I find a self imposed ignorance, especially when it comes to the important matters in life. People should be willing to change their ideas and their mindset or at least to test their current one. If you willingly accept ignorance you have no foundation for informed decision making. Thus you can be easily led by the generalisations that others make. This is a recipe for disaster, since such a population can easily be manipulated.
People learn a lot from each other if they are willing to. If however people remain in isolated ignorance, they will never understand one another. Great human injustices have been made through self imposed ignorance forcing peoples apart.
I understand some people prefer to remain ignorant with regards to some areas of life, since this igorance for them equates to mystery and this mystery to beauty. The phrase "ignorance is bliss" sums up this idea in a succient manner. This removal of mystery and thus beauty, animated by moving away from a life of ignorance should not deter us from this course. Our understanding of everything that we know of is ever complex and the fact that we will never truely understand anything represents a beauty beyond comprehension.
I find the fact that we have a mind a gift and that we should use this gift as much as we can within our own limits. To deny your mind is to deny yourself.
