That's why people hate mods and admins. They are frequently jerks and pull stunts like this and think its funny and tell their friends. Please don't defend this in any way. It's very indefensible. Sure I've kicked people off before and had fun doing it... but they were looking at PORN in the school library on the computers, which is a violation of policies they aggred to. Find where it says you can prevent them from doing homework because they talk/act dirty OFF the computers. Sure what they're doing is wrong, but there are appropriate channels to deal with it. Acting irresponsibly and abusing power is not one of them.

Actually, I can abuse my power and I did misuse my power. In fact, they are VERY lucky that a 24 hour ban is all they got, because if I were PMSing or something, I guarantee you I'd have gone two places: (1) To the university police to report their misconduct, and (2) to their professor to let them know they are working together on a project when they shouldn't be.
If you think I abused my admin power, think again. An abuse of admin power would be reading their emails, deleting their files, or altering their files. I did not nor would I do this. Secondly, what I did was not against policy. They know full well that they are subject to monitoring, lockouts, and investigations. By using the computers in that lab, they agreed implicitly to agree with these rules. Computer Science admins are notoriously anal about their networks.
I can understand that you would be upset in this situation, however, I believe that "the end was justified by the means." If I were to lock them out randomly, that would be one thing, but I locked them out as a consequence for an inappropriate behavior. Negative reinforcement. And I know they know why the got locked out.
Lastly, just to ease my mind of any guilt for wrongdoing, I spoke wih the senior network admin, and informed him of my actions, to which he replied, "you go girl." This would not have been the case, however, were this a mainstream all-student lab.

My account got banned by some n00b admin once, when I went to ask her why, she said I had "inappropriate photography" on my account right in front of my friends and everyone in the computer lab. Turns out they considered a high resolution shot of the Hubble Deep Field to be "inappropriate photography" - it was for fscking cosmology homework damnit :-( made me look stupid for no reason.
Anyways the whole point of this trip down memory lane is that it's an example of a jerk admin, but I'm sure you guys have worse horror stories. I don't want to go into my IT woes - let's just say I didn't keep backups on several different media formats at once for no reason :P

Wow. You just proved my point all over the map. You.... totally abused your power. That's retarded and the reason why people like me, who are nice admins, still are hated just because of my title. Next time, take it to option one or two. If they wanted to, they could report you since you technically have no legal grounds to prevent them from doing their project. You'd be hard pressed to find reason to do that when it's NOT computer-related.

I think I didn't write that very well - I was trying to provide a contrast between what you did and what a jerk admin does - you had a reason for what you did. My admin had no reason and was a total n00b and mad me scrounge around to use my friend's comp Darn I hate it when a post makes the wrong impression

Hey not all admins are bad. I have admin on my school's computer network...wait.....no, I just know all the teachers' passwords.
And although it may have been a bit overboard (maybe just tell them to piss off before doing it on their comp screens), I still support your decision. Jerks deserve punishing.

While it was a little funny what you did, you still didn't have the right to do it in my eyes. So you got the password and locked all their accounts, isn't that the same as deleting their files? (at least when they needed them). You could've done other things to get them to shut up. They were acting like dicks, you abused your privelages and locked them out of their accounts. From the sound of things both you and the boys are about on the same level when it comes to being rude. Two wrongs don't make a right. And I'm pretty sure screwing them over on a project did quite a bit more damage to them than did their immature comments that you hear every day at a junior high school.
When someone nudges you on the shoulder, you don't stab them in the face with a knife.

You should keep out of this conversation now and go back to hole you came out of, there is a history with Zehly you don't nor ever will find out about as to why she did what she did.

There are no legalities on a private, closed university network. They are not forced to use those computers to do their assignments. You sound like a cynical anti-admin. The problem is, you're coming off like an idiot :/ And reporting me would be futile in this case, because they have nothing to gain from it. Are you upset because you didn't get your project turned in on time? o.O

Let's try a parallel;
Zehly did indeed without a doubt abuse admin privelages.
She made herself into both the judge and jury, in passing judgement.
Therein lies the parallel-
Particularly for Juvenille court, judges are prone to making concessions and using loopholes to lighten or increase punishments for acts of deliquency. Sometimes, for example, they'll give a stronger than normal punishment for a mostly unrelated or minor infraction so that the actual one doesn't go on the books.
Unless she actually spoke to the boys about it, explaining what she did and why, it's like hitting a dog for having an accident hours after the accident, when it's already cleaned up; With no association between the punishment and the misbehaviour, it serves no other purpose than self-gratifications.
2 wrongs do not make a right, but vengeance is always sweet. Behaviour like that would have gotten them kicked out of any library or computer lab in my school, anyway.
Zehly is sassy, resilient, and resourceful, and whether or not I approve of that particular action, I can't say I wouldn't have done something similar in the same situation.
And, regardless, the story was amusing.
