Exclamation YIKES vent gets personaly info!

I don't know if this is entirely true for sure but my guildie says every time we go onto vent he gain personal info on his sceen (he didn't know it/do it on perpose). He first noticed it when he logged on and saw competely acurate info about himself here is his orginal post with some personal info removed.

Quote:
Vent is pretty crazy. Did you know when you log onto my server, I gain lots of info about where you live?

For example.

One person that has logged in gave me this info:

Latitude:
Longitude:
City: (I hid this)
Area:
Country: United States
Time Zone:
Nationality:
Population: 278058881
Continent: North America
Currency:
When I logged in, I found:

Latitude:
Longitude:
City:
Area:
Country:
Time Zone:

The rest was correct.

Now comes the issue of internet privacy. ALways be careful who you trust online. If I was able to stumble across this info, imagine what someone planning to get it could do. Stay safe online!

And vent is crazy.

EDIT: i wanted to see how far I can go, and I found out that telus sells me internet...its true, and creepy. I have no intention of seeing where everyone is from and your info is safe with me.
As far as I know we didn't input info. I can't confirm this myself however this is a very trusted guildie. I ask if someone else cna confirm this.

I just read my guildie's post and he confirms it I myself never saw the info. I think only the server admin gains the info. However I'll have to ask him I just thought everyone should be warned.

All I've seen when running a server is what IPs log in. The stuff you listed is probably a derivation based on the IP, but as I said.. I don't remember seeing it before.

And yeah, IPs can give anyone a lot of info, but it's about as hazardous as, say, posting on a message boards. Your IP follows you in pretty much anything you do, no getting out of that..

True enough, all about the IP really. If your walking around with your regular 'ol IP address anyone and their mother can find out where you're at.

...then again Yahoo! People Search will yield about the same results given how many people give out personal info online.

Yeah, I don't get these people that put their phone numbers and stuff in their information. I mean - I'll leave my IM names for folks if I feel somebody may need to get a hold of me, and I'll give my name.. But you aint gonna know exactly where I love or anything about me that'll lead you to me. And even if it did, I have a few friends that may want to meet you. And hell, maybe Smith and his buddy Weston might stop by.

Not to worry though, meeting people online is just like meeting someone on the street in real life. You don't know who the other person is, what their intentions are, or anything about them. You meet them, say hi, get together sometime later, and often get a friend out of it. Most everyone on the Internet is just like us, people bored after their daily activities. The rate of people marrying people they met on the Internet's much higher than the rate of people getting killed/raped/murdered by someone they met on the Internet. I'm not worried.

I ain't either, but after 3 years of AO, I WILL allow myself to be qouted saying that people tend to let out their real selves online 'cause they feel safe. AFter a while that turns their personality into that 'net mojo. That can make them a lil more of a threat. Also, while most of these people wont find you, they will harrass you - some sick people out there who would LOVE to get your IP.
