WOW - 2 Week Update
Hey All,
I bought World of Warcraft 2 weeks ago and am now a level 19 Hunter (max is level 60). That makes me a complete newbie in that game but i thought i would share some observations with the guild wars community.
Just a little background. Have been playing GW for 7 months and was getting a little bored with it. I still boot up GW every nite and GVG with my guild (love those guys), but GW was getting a little stale and i was just curious about WOW. Just passing time waiting for chap 2.
So now i am compelled to share some of my feelings with u guys.
1. Please drop the bickering between PVE players and PVP players. Anyone who says that GW PVE is a grind should be sentenced to to play WOW for a month. WOW is one of the most grindiest things i have ever played. GW has managed to eliminate a huge amount of the stupid grind. Leveling up a toon in GW is a pleasure. To get a level 60 in WOW could cost u 6 months time not to mention the monthly fee. In GW an experienced player can level up a 20 in 2 weeks, make a PVP toon, and experience high level gaming at the same time. The way GW has merged PVP and PVE is amazing.
2. Who ever said that GW does not have a story line or that it is a dumb story should be sentenced to three months wondering the Barrens in WOW. There is no story line in WOW other then the Allies and Horde fighting it out. You get quests to gain experience but there is no driving story line.
The mission level advancement in GW is brilliant. The story/movies/missions method is far superior then going out a killing 20 raptors and returning 20 raptor claws to some NPC on the other side of the world from where u have to go to find the dam raptors.
3. The Guild Hall is an amazing Idea. There is nothing like it in WOW. I never realized how truely beneficial a Guild Hall is. My guild goes there and we chat for an hour before gvg. A really nice social touch to GW.
4. The graphics in GW are far superior to WOW.
5. WOW servers are bottle necked. Several times during peak usage I had to wait almost an hour to log on to WOW as it searched for my characters.
6. When u get into some of the high traffic cities in WOW the lag can be spectacular.
I can go on but will save some for my next update.
All the above said, i must admit that i am enjoying playing WOW. The community that i have met have been very curteous and helpfull.
No one has yelled at me for being a noob. I think the fact of the monthly fee has eliminated alot of the 13 year old morons that haunt GW.
Peace

Well said, and I think it's nice that someone who plays WoW can still keep some honest perspective about the difference in the games and what GW offers that WoW doesn't.

I got that 14 day free trial and played it for like 10 minutes, I could not stand looking at the graphics, they are so ugly and cartoony.
One of the guys at work plays WOW religiously and he tells me about the login qeues they have to wait in to login.
That would drive me crazy, sometimes I wake up early and have time before I leave to work so I login to GW just to chech who is on and what are the prices, if I had to wait to login then ... I would not be pleased.

i played a 14 day trial of wow too , only login 3 days tho , my first experience was kind of hard cose i went exploring before doind anyleveling , i end up dieing 30 times in the ocean , i decide to delete that char and make a new one. did some quests " kill 10 stuffs , give to npc , kill 12 stuff give to npc , then i fell alone .. i want to chat , noone talks , i found it odd ... second day i login with a friend that is playing for some time now , he show me the subway system and flying the bird thing .. nice .. but nothing like guilwars ... where you log in and can be chating , questing , doind a mission with a complete stranger in minutes ... not to talk about CA where in less then 1 min you are teamed up and fighting.
wow is nice , but guildwars is the best game on planet.

WoW is a totally different game...But it can be compaired to GW in ways. I mean...remember you are compairing a grind game to a pvp game.
Keep a non biased viewpoint
(monthly fees are bad)
oh and playing anygame for 7 months is going to make it old and boring...take a break

I agree, ive never played WoW, but i hear some horror stories about it. Why waste a few months leveling to 60, when i could spend a total of 48 or less hours maxing out a GW char. Im not rich(in game), i just have nothing better to do. i hear though, that WoW has much larger maps...Which is what would draw me in.

hello all,
well got to say for YEARS I was keeping up with process on WOW, then along came EQ2, I was playing EQ1 and well when WOW didnt ship for months later and EQ2 did, I got it and played it for 6 months. I like the game grafics I belive in EQ2 to be compaired to GW. story was good and sound much better than the WOW area. One main thing I didnt like, was the process to level in your sub classes IE, cooking, crafting or whatever JOB you decided you wanted to do. I would spend at least 2 days a week doing NOTHING but cooking, food used for health regen and drinks for mana- eng regen. higher the lvl the better it worked for you. I was in a good guild and they brough me all kinds of stuff so i could sit and cook, and then sell to them at a lower rate. but this type of GAME becomes EXTREAMLY boring very fast. Watched to progress on GW and when it came out I knew it was made by ex-Diablo folks, and well if any of you have ever played one or 2, it is a very fun easy to play game, that just looks good, so knowing what they have done in the past, well had to try this free monhtly play game out, needless to say, I have the Platnum edition of EQ and EQ2 for sale, say 20.00 for both, plus shipping, they have been kept in the box since i purcsahed GW.
game play and story line is why I play GW, it is my live movie or book. have just enough reading in it to say book, and enough action to call it my live movie. so no more movies hehe, unless it is really good.
nutshell, thanks Guild Wars Gods for makin this game !!
Queen out

I bought WoW the other day to play with some of my friends at college, but it doesn't compare to the fun I have playing Guild Wars. GW tends to be instant gratification. Playing equals having fun.
WoW is delayed gratification - if it ever arrives at all. Playing equals preparing to have fun, ad nauseum. I'm probably still going to play both, but I know where my true gaming heart is.

1. You're 100% right on this one. WOW is all about grinding, most players just grind dungeons or certain for up to 1000 hours (seriously) just to get one specific item, 1000 hours is about as much as most of you've played GW in total. WOW is all about grinding, do a quest and it's grinding a certain type of monster most of the time, if you don't feel like questing, you're probably just grinding a certain type of place for a huge amount of hours.
2. I myself think the GW story is crappy, it's not unique at all, but who cares about the story? I played this game because I like to play this game, not to hear the story. And about WOW not having a story, you're very right on that point. WOW messed up the whole story of the Warcraft series, which have a story that's way better then the GW story.
3. I agree, Guild Halls are a very nice place to meet, and since you know most of your guild members, you can chat about everything you want. Who needs IRC, MSN, ICQ etc. when you've got a Guild Hall?
4. The graphics are totally different styles. The Warcraft series have always had a cartoony look, which shouldn't be changed ever. If they'd replaced the WOW looks with the GW looks it would really suck, since it's simply not "Wacraftish". Also, WOW has cities with hundreds, or even thousands of people in it, and you can't have spectacular looks when you're facing so many people, there's no computer that wouldn't crash. And I'm a big fan of the WOW graphics, and I like them more then the GW graphics to be very honest.
5. Yep, this is very lame. I've played WOW for 2 months, and several times I couldn't log in at all, couldn't get on my character or just got lagged to death while logged in. Most certainly not worth the 10 dollars each month when it comes to lag, since I haven't experienced lag besides during the big updates (Sorrow's Furnace and Chapter 2 preview) because of the many people downloading files, but that's 2 times in 7 (?) months of playing.
6. Yep, during the first 2 weeks of playing, I was in a just newly added server, though, during the 2 month of playing, the lag got so much worse, it took long before I could actually control my character because of the terrible lag.

I have tried WoW once, and I was not liking that. Even though theoretically its should have been way better than the game I was playing at the time, RS. In graphics, game play and what not. But RS and WoW have one thing in common that sets GW apart, playing time, I've been playing for a month and I have 2 level 15's, and thats with alot of farting around. ArenaNet did a very good job with that. The only flaw I see in GW, is there is no cash reward in combat. RS has the Duel Arena and the Wilderness where one could go and kill for profit. But thats ok... World of Warcraft < Runescape < Guild Wars.

Yes, I agree.
But the only thing that is better with WoW is all the fun raid bosses. (40 people vs. (in GW terms) a level 50 boss) and that the map is way bigger.

Some of you guys should check out D&D online.
I myself have played GW for about 7 months and will be picking up the new content when it arrives, but got a bit burned out on it so noticed D&D.
I'ts kind of like GW where there are "instanced" dungeons, however the real time combat a lot of fun and tons of very cool spells and classes. I personally don't like PvP and I think that's why GW was getting stale for me as it seems more focused on that, however there is none in D&D so some folks may not like it.
Never played WoW myself because of some of the negative things I've heard about it.
I still play GW at least a couple of times a week, but sometimes something new is good every now and then.

I downloaded WoW and installed for for a "Two Week Trial Period." All I needed was 24 hours. IMHO, it can't hold a candle to GW.

I have a feeling FF XI has a lot of the same flaws as WoW does compared to GW. I just got a beta for the Xbox 360 version, spent a good hour or so downloading the 5-gig file to my hard drive, filled out more information that I would care to remember (Xbox 360 - USB Keyboard compatibility FTW!), then finally got to sit down and play. I played for maybe 20 minutes, and became dissapointed to the point of not wanting to play anymore, and gave up. Here is my reasoning:
1) The characters run reeeeeeeeaaaaaally slow
2) you select from 6? 5/6 races let you choose from male or female, then you select from 6 faces and two haircuts...that's it. Not even close to GW character customization.
3) The whole time I played, I ran through a huge city with a relatively small amount of NPCs sprinkled around that by in large were useless.
4) The only quests like things I got were to collect some random items that I was not told where to collect.
5) The HUD map system was so terrible, I gave up before I could find my way out of town.
6) There was no initial direction or tutorial to get me on my feet whatsoever. I was basically thrown into a world, given a gentle tap on the butt with a cheap slooooooooow cutscene that was entirely text based and explained nothing, then let loose.
I'm sure the game gets better after you play enough, but it just wasn't worth it to me. I turned of my 360 then got on GW...
