I recently, (about a week ago) made a post questioning all the in-game-slang. I know what most of them are, but the weird ones like "zomg" and "haxorz" made me wonder. I also said in the post that I've never heard someone use in-game-slang in real life....that being true, until today. I work at the front desk at a gym, and this kid came up to me and wanted to talk. He started asking me questions about various machines, and how he just ran a mile on the treadmill. His exact words being; "Yeah, I just ran like a mile on that treadmill. I'm UBER out of shape."

Yes, he said Uber...

At first I was taken back, then I thought he might have said "Super", and it might have come out wrong because he was tired. Being dazed and almost astonished at the fact that someone would actually use that language in person, I was speechless. I sort of laughed and felt sorry for him at the same time.

Please, tell me none of you actually say stuff like this in real life...if so, I'd recommend that you stop.

Languages evolve, new words are taken in and old ones get in lesser use, it's perfectly normal. Internet is playing a major role nowadays, and internet slang is getting into normal speech.

Tho, there's a lot of "words" that just sound stupid in reality, like someone saying 'lol'. Pretty sure I use internet-learned words in real life as well, mostly among friends where the 'joke' is undestood.

Yeah, people use those words outside of online games..
Uber is used a lot at school and a couple of select people at my school use ZOMG. I can't stand them.
I also can't stand people who use W T F (not what the f***, but w t f-- they say the letters!!!) in face to face conversations. Die haxors. =P

And??? People in my year and other years at school say the word 'uber' regularly now...I guess it's quite new but maybe it's not the same everywhere.
Also, with so many people using MSN and becoming familiar with such things as 'omg' 'wtf' 'lol' 'thx' 'np' sometimes people either accidentally say them or say them as a joke, especially 'lol'. I don't know what's going to become of us but with so many things being shortened for ease of typing on computer/mobile phone it's starting to break through to our speech.

Yes, uber is a real (german) word, meaning Over or Above (to be uberl33t would mean to be higher than l33t, for example). From there it has become known to many internet users to mean something along the lines of 'super' or 'mega'

While using 2 languages in 1 sentence isn't fully correct, being uber tired could, actually, have some semblance of a sane, noninternet meaning.

Uber has been used as a common slang term in Britain for more than a decade now amongst certain groups, so I suspect that it's use is just getting more widespread, probably accelerated by use on the web.

My main evidence for this is that I have been clubbing on the goth scene for about 12 years now (I feel old), and the term Uber-goth has been in common usage for all of that time, particularly stemming from the London scene. It just refers to someone who looks so extreme that it must have a major impact on their life outside of clubbing- hair, tattoos and body modification etc.

I suspect that in this case the translation may have gone the other way- common usage by a sub-culture which embraced the net early on has probably meant that the slang of that sub-culture has bled over.

In years to come scholars will probably spend many 'fun' hours analysing changes in language accelerated by the easy crossing over of sub-cultures facilitated by the web.

I know it's while speaking with other gamers, but a guildie has been trying to pronounce "PWN" lately...keeps coming out poned or something to that effect. I just don't have the heart to tell him how lame it all sounds.

Well 'pwn' is a typo stemming from 'own', there is no change in the pronounciation as it is not a seperate word. It should still be pronounced 'own'.

Plus, saying it with a P sounds idiotic.

Man you don't ever want to go to Germany, they quite often use this word in day to day speech, even the ones who've never used a computer before. Uber isn't so bad away from the pc. Saying 'lol' is an extremely bad habit, and one that can be eradicated by forcing yourself to type 'hehe' or 'hahaha' ingame. 'Noob' is a pretty poor thing to say in real life too.

The problem stems from the fact that use of gaming terms is usually acceptable on Teamspeak, but once 'FTW' 'Prawned!' etc etc start coming out of your mouth in informal conversation it's only a matter of time before they start popping out in other situations. It's not the hardest habit to break, if once you realise how foolish you sound.

Should people be more offended by a series of F-Bombs and all of the trimmings, or, "OMG WTF PWNED! ROFFLE"? In short, that's why I've mostly stopped caring anymore about how other people speak.
We've survived a generation of, "Like, well, I was totally like", and numerous localized slang unique to various regions; I think we'll live through this too, regardless of whether or not it's aesthetically pleasing.

On a professional level, if people know better than to go into corporate job interviews and businesses dropping F-Bombs every 4th word, I think they can manage to avoid the use of internet slang where it would not be looked favourable upon.
