For the kind of technology you get, it seems like the PS3 is only for "hardcore" gamers and Sony enthusiasts. I wonder whether doubling the price of the 360 will hurt their sales; not everyone is willing to blow 700+ on a decent gaming system. I'd much rather get a videocard overhaul.

Why again would anyone buy that over a computer? Seriously, the only reason their are consols is because they are a cheap way to play games, not anymore though.

Top of the line computers will still run you over 2 grand. That said, 500 bucks is pretty expensive.

Lets not forget now, to truely enjoy the graphics you need a HD TV. I dont have one, nor do I plan on buying, but think about it...$500+ for the PS 3 then you still need a HD TV, cost unknown to me. No sense in buying a 360 or PS 3 if you dont have HD. So all in all, itll be more than a grand before I can play the 5-10 titles that will come out in the first 6 months. Im thinking Ill just upgrade the PC.

Eh...I would still buy one at full price .... /dreading the breaking the bank part...
the graphics and technology alone would be worth the price. You guys say that you can get a computer for that price...well, yea, but not for a top of the line computer (unless it is built by you). My computer cost me like $400 bucks and trust me, it's been upgraded, making it cost just a little more.
Guess I'll be knocking on GameStops door as it comes out!!! Along with the new Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy XII
P.S. To comment about the HDTV, it's all about the quality of the graphics...I'm not sure (really cannot remember) if HDTV is required for the new PS3. But most homes now do have HD already...getting harder to find the 'old fashioned' TV's now-a-days...

For the same price, you will likely be able to get a 360 and a Wii. (I say likely because the official price for Wii is still secret.) This would then give you better motion sensing in the controllers of the Wii, the same HD support from the 360, and access to the exclusive games of 2 consoles instead of just one.
Since the games division was the only thing keeping Sony afloat, I think they may have just committed corporate seppuku.

Makes you wonder... for the cost of the PS 3, I can update my computer so that it will be by far better than the PS 3, and there are already a ton of games ready to push my PC to the limit. Sony will always have to update its console and it will never be as good as a PC. Somebody said almost all homes have HD, well dont almost all homes have a PC as well? If yes is the answer, why buy a PS 3 when you have the ultimate gaming machine on your desk. BTW, I dont have HD, am I behind?

Fast CD changers cost less than a third as much as new DVD players, multiple CD-ROM drives only cost about $60 each

Its true that alot of people are buying "HDtvs" now the real question is, do they know what they are getting? I had an article that took a servay of how many people had an HDtv, why they thought they should get one, are they even signing up for an "HD-Broadcast" (I remeber hearing a remark in the article that "the show said it was broadcasted in hd", yet they dont even know what "HDready tv's" or 'HDMI's" are, also most where content that the new tv made everthing look better and didnt think of paying for such a service)searching for that article atm, lost it when hdd crashed
here it is... http://www.doveconsulting.com/articl...HDTV_Nov03.pdf
Not every home has a PC, pretty close tho, and the only gamer adults are the "pentium" gen of adults who had parents in the business of computers(small percent) but now its usally the kids showing parents how a PC is able to "play games" (I know several guys/girls parents who have been converted to playing computer games over a console or arcade machines, I however preffer real pinball machines)
As for gaming in "HD" few pc games will look good in the wide 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio's, only consoles such as 360 and PS3 are made for these wide aspect ratio's... its almost extortion, but they are backward compatable to 4:3 ratio's.
long story short, new mediums always cost more untill they become widespread. But both the 360 and PS3 have failed me in terms of becoming a cheap soloution to becoming mediacenter...

As a sony fanboy... with a tons of ps1/ps2 games (150+)
I will be waiting for 2-3 hardware revisions...and the price HAS to be 400$ (for the nicer version) or lower to consider it..
On the side note with both game console's being too high imho... Nintendo may make some very nice gains this round of console wars.
As far as console vs pc game wars...
New Console's come out - there going to kick PC's butt..
1 year after the Console's come out - Pc's kicks console butt..
Repeast cycle

Umm, most people DON'T have High-def. I used to sell it.
If you only knew what it took to get them to buy it. Then it only looks good with High-Def and looks like ass with standadrd definition broadcasts or DVDs, etc.
Had to look at 80 of them almost every day for close to a year. I WON'T be buying an HDTV for a long, long time. They look like poo.
Not to mention I could build an LCD projector for a song and use that, for a bigger screen and better picture.
Now as to the cost, the Cell processor yields are almost laughable, which means large production costs. The drive in that is worth 300 by itself (I have a listing of what the upgrade drives for PCs will cost at launch), the graphics processor is the same one off the 7900 GT, and it has an Ageia PhysX processor that was just released, to the tune of 250 USD.
Tell me where that doesn't add up. That's not dealing with the uber-expensive XDR memory, the PCB, case, power supply, controllers, and the cost of recouping the R&D time AND the Dual Shock lawsuit.
It's a loss for Sony, a victory for consumers and not in the neighborhood of my PC. It's what we call a killer app. It drives Sony WEGA HDTV sales, broadband, and movie/game sales, which make the money. What they forfeit in console they will extort out of us later.
Oh, and Tempest, I can still play Oblivion with all the eye candy that had to be taken OUT of the 360 version cause it couldn't cope. Consoles will never touch some PCs.

Yeah I was thinking of having a pojector, or multi-projector setup for a monitor, CRT's are big and take up desk space, multi-CRT would take up toooo much space and have thick lines between em...
LCD's are slim and having a no dead pixel guarantee past a 19" is impossable(size limited) Multi-LCD monitors would also have lines, and 2 30" apple cenimatic monitor? I'd rather have a car...(too damn much for multiple LCD's or A big enough widescreen LCD that doesnt cost 700$ and still gets slow response timings)
a projector doesnt take up desk space, but does limit where you can set it up, multi-projector can squeeze the images next to eachother for a seemless look it too costs alot, but its better than a TV due to it WONT scretch images to the screen... a con is also its a pentium 4 type wattage, alot of juie is needed
projectors ftw. cmon find me a 1080p projector >.<
