Well, I don't have an iPod, but my friends certainly do! I'm pretty sure you can upload any mp3 format, seeing that all my friends are cheap bastards and refuse to pay for music.
How would the iPod reach it's popularity now if you had to pay for each song?
edit- actually, not just mp3 format, I think you can use...wav files too?

Bit of advice: Don't get an IPoD. Get an MP3 Player. You'll thank me later.

Yes. The iPod supports regular mp3 format, whether you rip it from CDs or acquire them through other means. The songs on the iTunes music store, of course, contains digital rights management protection and that limits the shareability of these songs. But, all commercial music download service have some sort of DRM protection.
Thing is, if you're only concerning yourself with mp3s, then no problem -- no DRM protection issues there and there's really no limit to the shareability of a song. But, if you choose to buy your song, the iPod will not play songs downloaded from commercial download services other than the iTunes Music Store (i.e., you can't play songs purchased or subscribed to from Napster, for example). And vice versa, you can't play iTunes purchased songs on other non-iPod mp3 players. That's just the nature of the industry.
In sum however, Apple has the dominant market share in both players (iPod) and in download service (iTunes), and the pricing and selection is fair. If you want an iPod, get an iPod. Do not get a random mp3 player (whether from Dell, Creative, Sandisk, etc.). I say this, again, because the iPod is the best selling music player on the market -- almost everyone has one. Consequently, there's a big market for third party accessories that just doesn't exist, say, with the Dell Jukebox. And trust me, you will eventually want accessories -- or at least the availability of accessories when the time comes.
Sorry Stalker, when the generic mp3 player makers leave the market because they can't compete or go belly up altogether, Apple will still be selling iPods in the millions. Where will Kinroan be with his generic mp3 player then?

You can also hold M4A movies and other data in them, just only works with Apple stuff best though (if connected via PC you can get your other data to/off it as every other device, I have proved this with a few other HDD players as well)
I'm getting one for my birthday. Can't wait!
EDIT ~ .m4a is the format on the new type of iPods only. Previous iPods Won't work with that type unless connected to a PC. iPod Nanos don't seem to currently support .m4a files yet

My MP3 player has 30 gigabytes of storage, what's your point? There are other non-iPod mp3players with 2gb+ flash memory as well.
iAudio X5L. 30gig miniHD, some odd 30+ hours of playback. Plays MP3, OGG, WAV, WMA, FLAC, videos, displays text files, works as an USB hub for cameras (can download the pictures from camera onto the player) and then even view the images. FM radio and stuff.
Not the smallest unit, but it's still smaller than my cellphone, lovin' it.

Its true there are other ones that are just as good at memory as an iPod. I personally am getting a refurbished 20gb iPod. To the question about limewire, you can use it as long as you transfer the songs over to iTunes. If you dont know how to do that, go to the library, then click explore, it should bring up a folder where your music is sent to once you download it, left click on the song you want then select open with, and then select iTunes. this will transfer the song into your library for iTunes.

I've got a creative zen sleek photo, and I'm very happy about it. It's got 20 gigs of disk space, great battery capacity, nice touchpad etc.
I've heard a lot of bad stuff about the hardships you need to go through to put songs on an iPod. Those of my friends who have it complained about this. Every single one of them. Even my sister, who is pretty competent with computer software etc., was yelling and cursing at the computer for a good 3 hours before she managed to put some songs on it. With my Creative, I spent ~10 minutes installing the software. Once the programme was launched, it took me about 10 seconds to figure out how to upload songs and pics.

hmm, Media Player 11 is shaping to be OK, but you got to MANUALLY sort the albums that are in your music out otherwise you may have loads of ones twos and threes there... I had that problem with an ATB album... :/
Edit: I think iTunes has a much more complicated way of putting MP3s into the media files as well, took me a bit to fully understand too... :\
