I know what you mean..i went to Sport Clips today at lunch to get my hair cut, and the soccer game was on...after about 10 minutes of viewing the mind numbing horror of boredom that is soccer I was willing to pay to have the channel changed.

First of all: I don't really care about whether GW would do some special ingame event for sporting events, though if they would ever do something like that then I think the Olympics are a better occasion then the superbowl or the Worldcup soccer.
That having said: the WC is a much bigger and much more global event then both the superbowl OR halloween are. I can only speak for Belgium but halloween is diddly squat down here and the superbowl is non-existant. Halloween afaik is an American holiday event only. For most belgians Halloween is just an excuse shops have for trying to sell us more crap. Up untill two years ago I had never ever seen any halloween decoration in Belgium ever.
I don't blame Anet for stuff like that though (although thanksgiving WOULD be an inapropriate event to organise imo). There aren't really that much global hollidays that I know off. Even christmas isn't all world-wide. Heck, at least organising events on holidays I don't have enables me to get the ingame items. Otherwise I'd actually be partying with friends and family.

Twenty two players on the field.
Goals the size of a house.
Ninety minutes of play.
Games that end 0-0.
Could anything be any less exciting?
I watched a game once. Within 30 secoinds I had the overwhelming desire to paint a wall and watch it dry just liven things up.

Halloween is bigger in Mexico than it is in the USA - though they call it Dia De Los Muertos and celebrate it a little differently - it is the same holiday nonetheless.
Its origins are European, even if it has fallen out of favor there.
'Thanksgiving' Is however, the American celebration of conquest.
Though as post 87 notes, these are holidays, and the World Cup is just a sporting event.
While it may be a major world sporting event, it is of no importance in America, and you'll have to find a channel if you happen to be a fan stuck here when it happens.
In the USA, 'soccer' is a children's game. You stop playing it at the same age you stop playing hide and seek or watching saturday morning cartoons (and being willing to admit it).
Given that between a third to two thirds of the GW fanbase are Americans, a World Cup event in GW might be either somewhat vacant, or full of people just there to do 'female elementalist line dancing' (ie: having no clue about what's going on and not caring one bit about that).

Soccer is much more enjoyable to watch than Baseball
Soccer players are also hell of a lot more IN SHAPE than baseball players

They didn't do anything for the Olympics too, and why would they?
And soccer is boring.
EDIT: Who has time for soccer anyway with the Stanley Cup Finals going on?

Anything less exciting? well try American Football (Rugby with padding) with its seemingly endless stop/starts - how can an hour game be stretched out to 4 hours and still remain interesting? bores me too tears, although I do find the calling of the Superbowl winners 'World Champions' rather funny seeing as no other countries can enter (same goes for World Series Baseball (played rounders at primary school though - fun to playing, mind numbinmg to watch for that matter - another borefest). Just because a football match can end 0-0 does not make it boring and just because a sport has high scores all the time does not make them exciting (think of cricket) - what makes football exciting is near constant action rather than stops every few minutes for a break or video replay etc, plus IIRC football is the most popular sport in the world and the World Cup the largest sporting event, yes even than the Olympics as more people watch it and more countries enter it (182 countries enter the World Cup I believe).
Back on topic: As a football lover (note FOOTBALL not soccer), I shall be watching every match I can, and cheering on England, but I don't think it should be included in GW - stick with just Christmas and Halloween as they make a nice diversion.

If I had to choose between golf or soccer, I'd choose... spontaneous combustion. So boring, yeesh.
If they put in an event for the World Cup, then they'd have to put one in for the Super Bowl, World Series, and the Stanley Cup, not to mention the Olympic Games... no just no. ;p

the problem with this guys saying football is boring is never actually playing it, I dont blame them... you only get to see how exciting football by playing it and enjoying it. While watching the WC, we got something to compare to.
Its awsome too see all those great players playing together with amazing individual talents and team work.
I never understood whats so great about baseball and that weird football where they never use theire feet (!), but then again, I never played those.

I'm American and I love soccer, even though I call it football. I love football too (J-E-T-S!). Of course I'm cheering on America in the World Cup. I'm also cheering on my family's country, Trinidad. Sucks that they got bracketed with Sweden AND England, but who knows? Like the commercial says... One game can change everything!
If GW were to do something for the World Cup, because for every zone besides the American zones it's a big deal, I'd say just have pennants from the winning nation hanging in the PvP areas for a day or so.

I'm sorry, have you ever taken a Spanish class? El Dia de Los Muertos and Halloween aren't similar in any way other than decorations and masks. DDM, as I'll call it, is to honor the dead, Halloween is a way for us Americans to pretend to care about anything and get free candy. I have never once heard of any special church services for Halloween, I can't say the same for Mexico and DDM, though.
The above is in no way a flame, and was not meant to be read in a disrespectul manner, it was simply an imformative comment. Also, ask some real Mexicans if Halloween is anything like El Dia de Los Muertos, they won't be happy that you compared the two

I don't see why they would have to do any event at all.
They could choose Boxing Day, the Chinese New year, Czech independance, Fencing world championship, and the NFAA archery Indoor Nationals and it would be good. Even had they done a Superbowl celebration doesn't mean they *have* to do a world cup one.
There should be none they *have* to do, nor is leaving out your favorite (even if celebrated by 100% of the worlds population) event a smite at you.
Personally I find the NFAA or FITA championships (US and European archery) MUCH more exciting that the world cup - in fact I didn't even know the world cup is going on right now. No reason to gripe that they didn't have a ranger competition to coincide with one of the largest archery tournaments of the year. That even has a good tie in with the game.
Maybe they don't watch soccer, maybe they didn't really think about it, maybe they are busy with some patches, maybe they are on vacation too much right now, maybe they didn't get it done in time, maybe they don't want to do sporting events, maybe all sorts of things.
Of course, feel free to ragequit over it. I would suggest you only play games you have fun at.
