There is no event planned for the world cup because not every country views the world cup as important. In Brazil, its almost a national holiday, where as in america, its pretty much 80% could care less.
Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. are National holidays not just in America, but in other countries as well. Thus the reason for holiday events there. my guess is that there might be one for 4th of july, but prob not as it only celebrates american independance.

Are you guys saying you've never seen Lion's Arch United play Shing Jea Wanderers? They use a Naga head as a football, it's a sight to behold.
Seriously, I'm glad there's nothing in GW remotely to do with the World Cup. There's enough of it on tv and in the papers.

Ok then so were doing an event for the world cup, why didnt we do one for the goodwill games? or the Baseball world classic? simple answer, because its not considered a holiday. Thus the reasoning behind naming them "HOLIDAY EVENTS"

Was that aimed at me? Cause if it was I have to inform you that I'd have no interest in the World Cup whether Scotland qualified or not. But then again, maybe that's because I'm female and not because I'm Scottish
(before anyone flames, I know a lot of girls like football too, I just don't happen to know any that do)

Used to play "soccer" as a kid, son plays it, Fiance is a big fan and used to play it. Our favourite team plays at noon EST (GO GERMANY!). As to all the hoopla in the news about the World Cup, well.. it is THE World Cup. There is no other international competition that compares barring the Olympics, and like the Olympics it only happens once every 4 years. That kinda makes it a big deal in the sporting world, at least the part that cares about Football.
It has nothing to do with Guild Wars, but neither does Christmas or Hallowe'en. I don't see any reason why there couldn't or shouldn't be GW events based around competitive sports, as it is a competitive environment. The Snowball Fight was awesome, a Football game or other sporting event in GW would be equally as fun, and probably enjoyed immensly by a lot of people. That's not to say I think the events should be specifically related to things like the World Cup, Stanley Cup, Superbowl, or whatnot.. just that it'd be fun and interesting, especially if they operated kinda like the ladders or challenge missions.
This is an idea with merit, imho.

I know LOL, but I have not lived here my whole life. I grew up in Chicago area, I've been around the world and have acquantainces from all over. None of them give a damn about soccer.
Besides, it'd be kind of silly for me to flame, as then I'd have to report myself, which would add email to my inbox, then I'd have to mod myself, perhaps even turn myself in to Lasareth's judgement...

Based solely on personal observation of the majority of Guild Wars players, I would have to say that if there was ever a sporting event honored it should not be the world cup of soccer.

Having an occasion for the World Cup (which, I should add, I will not be watching) is a bit like having an occasion for the Olympics, or for Wimbledon, or for the Superbowl, or for the Commonwealth Games, or for any other world sporting event you'd care to mention, i.e. silly.

It'd be a nice distraction from all the killing though And you can guarantee there'd be no shortage of streakers.
