Give Nightwish a try. The album Century Child is brilliant.

Well yes "today's bands" are icky. I don't like them. But you can't get away from the fact that synths and such are going to be used. It's more of a matter of who uses them well and with creativity. You also have to realize that NIN has been described as industrial and at times techno. So ya know, synth is kind of what those genres are about.

As i lay dying, It dies today, wicked wisdom, soilent green, nailbomb, morbid angel, taproot, six feet under, burzum. I could go on and on. So many bands that ive grew to love but I would have to disagree with an earlier post. Cannibal corpse with chris barns was one of the founding fathers of underground death metal.

Soylent Green IS people!
Couldn't resist.
Unlike 99% of the population, I enjoy all of Metallica's albums up to but not including St. Anger.
Sure, they completely switched genres at least once, but that doesn't change the phenominal talent that they have. And if you think about it... most of their playing styles have changed with the members that have left/died.
Their first three albums were amazing (Kill em all, RTL, MoP). They are a genre of their own.
Next two (...And Justice for All, 'Black' Album) started changing things a bit, with Justice being an outstanding piece of art IMO.
Load and Reload tried some stuff out. The band decided to try something new. Hey... I enjoyed it. You can't deny the brilliance in Unforgiven II, Low Man's Lyric, Bleeding Me, King Nothing, etc...
Garage Inc. was an album full of covers. Some are awesome. Some leave a lot to be desired. One disc is new recordings, and the other is from their garage days. People often simply forget about this album because its ZOMG new.
S&M = Covers of their own stuff. Good if you can appreciate the Symphony.
St. Anger is just garbage. I'll agree with anyone on that one.
Sorry... I've been a Metallica fan since I was 5.

New? That album is old as hell lol... and one of my favs. Somewhere around here I have a special edition that also included a bunch of killer live tracks.
