My Grandmother is 85 years old, has alzheimers, and sometimes forgets how to turn the ignition but she still drives.

I said to myself "Wtf? A short-looking old lady speeding in her crappy car?". She was going at least 160-170kmh (100-110mph) which is really fast for a highway since the limit here is 100kmh (60mph).

It's either old people drive too fast, too slow, swirve a lot, or don't use their damn flashers when turning.

There should be a law where people over 70 can't drive (or 75 actually, 70 isn't THAT old).

I know I speed sometimes myself, but I'm better than the average driver. I've been to special driving schools which costed over 8 grand Canadian dollars (I'm 18 btw). But I don't think some old granny can handle all that speed lol. It surprised me.
I live in Florida and the BIG TRAFFIC JOKE here is the Canadians when they come down for the winter, the way they drive while they are here they should be forced to leave the cars at the boarder.
I would rather have 100 blue haired 80 year old little lady's driving than 1 canadian Snowbird. And statistics show that more accidents are caused by drivers under the age off 24 then any other age group. So no one under the age of 24 should be allowed to drive.

Incidently, saying you're a better driver and what others shouldn't do, because you went to some expensive driving lessons? Didn't they teach you not to break the law?
They teach you how to drive, they don't talk about the law much really. Also 130 KMH is not even fast. Sometimes I'll go over the 100kmh speed limit along with 70% of drivers on the road. To get a ticket, you need to go over 119 KMH, if you go under that usually the cops don't care. But if you're going 120+ they'll give you a fine. It's OK to speed a little bit sometimes (as long as it's reasonable of course...) as long as you know what you're doing. Just because I'm 18 doesn't mean I don't know how to drive, but most people my age don't know how. I didn't spend thousands on those special courses for nothing, they've turned me into a better driver. I'm also considering being a cop soon, and to be a cop they make you take another driving course, which is again an advanced driving course. Once I take that I'll for sure pass it with flying colors.

Not going to happen. Most people under that age do suck at driving but that's not my problem. Driving is my life, since the age of 16 I've driven over 35,000 KM (I've went to work with my dad almost everyday so I could get some experience, and he runs a delivery company.)

I know that in at least one European country old drivers after ~65 IIRC have to re-take their test every year or every few years to make sure they are still capable.

Young people need to demonstrate more experience before getting a license and should need a test every couple of years at the beginning IMHO just to catch any bad habbits forming.

Aren't you contradicting yourself there?

"People over 75 shouldn't be allowed to drive because they are more hazardous than younger", but "People below 24 should be allowed to drive because.. I'm below 24 and I know how to drive! Not my problem others can't drive!"

Or is that generalization, 'unno

Anyways, even if there is a granny driving 200km/h at some road, doesn't mean every granny out there drives at 200km/h or is danger to the others. Same as it is with the young drivers, even if there are 'tards who have no clue how to drive, doesn't mean that every "young driver" should be classified as such.

My gf is an optician. _Every day_ they get elderly people, often sent by social services, coming in who have driven there even though they can barely see the hand in front of them. Typically they refuse to buy new glasses, because the ones they've had (since the fifties) "are good enough".

And here's the kicker: opticians can't take the driving license from a driver, no matter how unsuitable, and are not allowed to alert the authorities.

So the next time you're wondering why an elderly driver is driving 30 below the speed limit and is oblivious to traffic, wonder no more: he/she doesn't just have two second reaction time, but can probably not see beyond the bonnet of the car.

I'm not for setting an absolute age where driving license should be revoked, but there should be regular check-ups - every five years say - after 65.

In Belgium we kinda solved the problem: Free public transport for elderly. ( 65+ )

Problem is, youngsters, who normally should stand up for elder people, and give them their seat, now have more ground to stand on: They paid for their seat, and the elderly got on the bus for free...I believe the youngsters are right though...

I belive the elderly have paid their fair through taxes and fee's many times over by the time they reach 65. And any desent youngster should give up their seat to an elderly or pregnent person. Being polite, does it ring a bell?
