I was standing in the hall ways waiting for Science 8 to start, when I got in there my teacher said something bad was going down, of course we had no clue what the real story was at the time so we just had our normal class. I didn't find out what happend until I got home. I watched it for maybe 10 minutes before I decided it was better to do homework than to watch war break out.
The only thing people really talked about in my area was "I hear Toronto or Vancouver could be the next target." Not much focus was put on the actual event itself as most of us feel watching and taking about it over and over again is not the way to make people feel better. Now-a-days it is never even brought up, it is on the tv sometimes, but never the main focus of any conversation.

A friend of mine and I were out eating breakfast. Oddly enough, although we hadn't yet heard what happened, we were in a philosophical discussion about what constitutes a genocide versus a mass murder. We were both in a state of irony and awe when we went home to see the news.
We had caught the broadcast minutes before the second tower went down. So we actually figured that we must have been discussing that right as it was all happening. Very scary, indeed.
My heart goes out to all the families who lost loved ones that day, and in the aftermath that followed.

I still remember the 9/11/01 as if it was yesterday.
I work for a big world international bank in the UK, at the time I worked in the banking department. We had a problem with a transfer on one of our USD accounts so I called the New York in the World Trade Centre at 8am NY time. I spoke to a staff member there and after 15 minutes we sorted the problem. About half an hour later we had a news buttin on our desktop screens from Blomberg saying a plane was heading to the World Trade centre, we all thought it was a joke, but as soon as we saw it hit the first tower 10 minutes after it happened the horror hit us all in the UK office. I tried calling back the NY office but never got through. Sadly the member of staff I spoke to that day no longer works for our bank and I never found out what happened to them.
That day will stay in my mind forever.

I think most schools kept the news from the kids because they knew, in the days ahead that everyone's lives would be changed, forever. They probably wanted that one last day of innocence.
Thank you to everyone who posted and to the admins, who kept the small minded out of the thread.

Living in the UK, I had no first-hand link to 9/11. Just that of shock at the events of the day. I first heard about it after it was mentioned at school, and then saw what was unfolding on the TV when I got home.
incidentally, there's a well- written song called 'believe' by Yellowcard (one of my favourite bands) that always reminds me of 9/11. The lyrics are pretty moving.
'Think about the love inside the strength of heart
Think about the heroes saving life in the dark
Climbing higher through the fire
Time was running out
Never knowing you weren't going to be coming down alive'
'And you still came back for me
You were strong and you believed'

Sadly that is true. The school i was in when this all happened made the teachers or actually teacher turn off the TV. I was one of 20 kids in that school to actually see the second tower get hit and to watch it all on TV. The other teachers did not have cable and couldnt watch it, i just happened to be in history class, which had cable, and our teacher let us watch it. We were the only class who got to watch it, at the end of the period the principal came in and told her to shut it off, to many parents complained about exposing their kids to it. Sadly it was all we could talk about the rest of the day.

Because of me living in Europe, I found out what had happened quite late. I came home, started playing Championship Manager and turned on the television. All channels were showing the planes smashing into the towers. Over and over again. I just sat there and watched in horror. When seeing the people who jumped out from the building I turned off the television, as I had no desire to watch it anymore. I remember when I went to soccer practice the same day, we hardly played any soccer, but spent more time talking about it.
I doubt that I, as well as the rest of the world, will ever forget what happened that day.

I was in 6th grade. I don't know where I was when it happened because the staff never told us. They kept it from us to prevent things from getting too hectic. I overheard a rumor about it in the halls, but didn't find out the full details until I got home.
This is our generations' kennedy assassination. I honestly wonder if we will think so highly of it 50+ years down the line. Time will tell. I also think that something bigger is inevitably in store. Something...nuclear. I'll stay away from new york and D.c. in the meantime.
