Welcome to Progressive music. Sometimes you will have to get past the vocals until they start to grow on you. I know I hated the growl back when I was 12.
Everyone I have introduced Agalloch to have fallen in love, and you will too. I can upload more songs if you wish.
You can't go wrong with Opeth either =D
Harvest

If I remember correctly, that song should have no growls at all.

I knew your name sounded familiar, I've heard some of Opeth's music. Just didnt really give it a good listen I guess.

Boo!
If you like softer music, I would definitely recommend purchasing/downloading Opeth's Damnation album and give it a good listen. I don't recall Akerfeldt giving a death metal roar in that album as of now.

There's so much stuff out there, but if I'm going to listen to rock of any sort, give me metal or give me death! Amon Amarth FTW! Er...sorry lol. Actually on song that I could almost listen to forever (at least for a few hours straight anyway) is Party Hard by Andrew WK. I don't think it's possible for me not to dance to that song.

Amon Amarth is a fun listen. I just got one of their albums in my inbox a few days ago =/
edit - I have their new album (With Oden On Our Side) in a rapidshare link if you're interested. To be released on September 25th =D

I saw Tool live and they were pretty good but I think they are a little overrated IMHO.

And I feel that they are extremely overrated. Now we both wait for the fanboys to come and beat us up with their Maynard masks.

I would recommend Avenge Sevenfold, Audioslave, Shinedown... thats a few that havnt been mentioned i think. The new venged Sevenfold album is awsome, especially if you like some nice guitar.

Fastest way to get either killed or praised is:
Post Monster Magnet in a Rock Thread :P
Here is an example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2boMoMx9dgw
Monster Magnet - Spacelord
It's hard to tell which type of Rock Monster Magnet is playing as they seem to change their style with each album. The older things are mostly Stoner Rock, the new ones are more of straight rock. *Shrugs* Like it or hate it.

*lawl* A7X. I honestly don't like their new album. There are one or two decent songs, but the vocals really ruined it for me. They are slowly hitting the whiney crap that I hate.
The album with "trumpets" in the title will remain Avenged's best CD, methinks.

I liked some songs on their new album too. I also liked a few on the album before that.
