Default % of married couples lowering

Kind of odd considering the amount of people is going up...

To some people it's actually better to not get married. If you take in the fact that when you marry, and say you divorce, each spouse is entitled to half of the assets you attained during marriage. A lot of people now don't get married for that reason. Also, if it doesn't happen to work out....You just leave.

To be honest, i'm not suprised.. i mean to find a good, honest, companion is hard for both sexes, i mean of all the girls i've met in my life, i've only seen one that i REALLY like.. and i assume the same can be said of females looking for guys.. not only is it hard to find someone, its hard to ask them questions such as that, rather than it is to ask people for a simple one night stand, oh well, people are idiots at times

People just don't want to work hard at it. They don't want to put the time and energy in that it takes to make a marriage work. I don't like my husband all the time but no one ever promised me a bed of roses. No one ever said that love was a warm fluffy feeling ALL the time. Love is an ACTION. This whole subject pisses me off. grrrrrrrr.

I always thought that love was a feeling...that warm fluffy feeling that you described. How can you make love an action, I'm curious? I love my husband to death, and nobody promised me a bed of roses either. But we make it work. Sure we don't get along all the time. Believe it or not fighting is part of a healthy relationship. The "make-up" part to me is the best anyway....To make the love (feeling) work, you have to make it (actions) work. You can love somebody and not like them very much too. Of course if you both don't work to make it last, then what's the point anymore?

I just think in this time of age, people are more prone to have pre marital sex. Plus the fact that being divorce today isnt as much of a taboo in the older generations. People are sex fiends, and dont want it from the same person over and over, simple as that lol Of course im still an angel, so it doesnt apply to everyone lol 0=)~

It's self propagating, really.

American pop-culture is becoming more and more obscessed with sex. Somehow people are under the impression from all that bullshit that sex is the ultimate expression of love and thus the ultimate fufillment in a relationship, i.e. there's not really much to do afterwards. Why get married if it's just about the sex? This of course reflects on popular culture, and we become more desensitized to sex.

Pretty soon we'll be pulling an Ancient Rome and having orgies in the streets, which is when I leave.

i object people who say that marrige is falling because people don't want to work hard, or its because we have all become more sexualy promiscious or that they can't handle a potential divorce settlement,
personaly i think that it is because people don't feel to declare there love with a church service. also, at least here in the Uk, if a couple spilts up, it basically counts as divorce so both partys get settlements despite not being married.

Object all you want but your argument doesn't make sense. Marriage is a legally binding action regardless of religion. There's not much ceremony that NEEDS to be involved.

The issue is about the depth of a relationship, with marriage being a very involved level. People simply don't want to get to that level anymore because they see no reason to.

In response to the title - Duh, don't tell me this is actually news to you.

I'm not sure if they do it everywhere, but they talk about this in my old school in some classes, can't remeber if it was part of a class or an intresting fact. Anywho, this is no new statistic, marriage has been going down the crapper for quite some time. Then again, I guess I just know this because I know a bunch of people who's parents have split up, including myself.

People just seem to be living together as partners more and splitting expenses without getting married. My 28 yr old brother has been living with his girlfriend for about 4 years and never plans on marrying.

I agree with what others have said though.. it's hard enough finding someone compatible, but you have those "50% of all marriages end in divorce" statistics staring you down as well. It can be intimidating to basically trust someone else with your life and future, if marrying that person.

Me and my wife dated and lived together for a long time before finally deciding to tie the knot. Nothing much changed other than her getting a big rock

Lived with my husband for many years before we 'tied the knot'.....nothing changed except taxes were easier and getting insurance was simple.
My sister decided not to get married, but owns a house with the guy she has been dating for the last 10years----sounds pretty committed to me; and they dont see the need for the certificate........thats the way it is now.
