This one's simply an extension of those older experiments of the same nature where people believe they're shocking real people in another room, and they see how far people will go when goaded. As it turns out, along with the study on costumes and the nature of roles, people will go quite far when pressed, some even believing they're administering fatal levels of electricity to the other person.
