If you are interested in the numbers of female and male players and the age of the ppl playing, and the question if that influences motivation for certain games or what matters for them in the games they play, you should read this article: http://m-plabs.com/mmogarticles/MMO_...otivations.pdf
It's an academic project so I consider it quite valid information. Nick Yee did this to give insight into the gaming community for game developers.
Now what is certainly interesting about the article is that it's about MMORPG's only and he got his data only from these players, over 35,000 in total. It states that 8% to 18% (depending on the MMORPG) are female players.
This would make the suggestion stated by posters before, that a lot of the female online players (as stated in the article the TopicStarter quoted: 64%) are actually playing very different games like cardgames, highly assumable.
Well that was my little part in this topic

Really now?
Most players are male no doubt, most of the female society are the pretty-girl type, doll up, go out, hang out with guys who are meatheads, etc. I enjoy playing with girl gamers too. They're sure smarter than your typical male PUG that's for sure, not immature either. Very respectable field of gamers.
Plus I guess it helps them if you hear a sexy voice asking for something rather than a 40 year old guy... lol

I am male but I make mainly female characters because I'd rather look at them than a guy's a-s-s!
Also, some seem to think that being a male and playing a female character is making a female representation of yourself - ummm no! LOL It can be for some, but for others ITS A CHARACTER - THAT YOU CONTROL - IN A GAME. Please quit reading Freud, he was a nonce and that's been known for a long time now.

Most of the people that I talk to in game aren't men. I'm not either. Most of the girls I talk to have guy chars. I do also.
It's like Erik Fox said.. a lot of the times you just don't want to tell anyone, for one reason for another. It's nice to have guy characters to fall back to so that people don't assume things about you.
