I work for Sony Hawaii as a temp. The PS3 is worth the price tag. Currently it is $499 for the lower end and $599 for the high end. They just lowered it another 100 dollars in late Septemberish. That's anywhere from $200 to $400 dollars that Sony is eating on each unit depending on who you believe.
Lets look at the stats...
Official specs: http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/specs.html
The blue ray drive alone is $900 dollars.
Sure you can find it cheaper off the website but it will be near that. And yes you can go HDDVD instead of Blueray but take a look for yourself.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blueray
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDDVD
Not to mention for all of Sony's faults in the music/movie industry they have more support for the Blueray then Toshiba does for the HDDVD currently.
But all that is mute.
You get a Cell Processor...I mean you're getting to try almost cutting edge technology here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_processor
Sure the Xbox360 was running something new as well
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360
but again well...decide for yourself.
You finally get Wifi , Memory stick and HDTV support...
Sure it's more then the Wii coming out but how long before you get tired of pratically the same graphics as the current gen consoles...then all you get is what they keep telling us is supposed to be an innovative controler.
And no there are no delays expected on the ship date for the PS3...that's inside the company too...I may not be high up but we're in tight quarters.
Sony is having it's Hawaii expo on November 2-4 or so, I'll be working around the PS3 display. I'll get some nice big images to post and tell you guys how it actually feels...and maybe if we're fast enough me and a couple of coworkers can get one out the back and onto ebay before anyone notices...

Come on, a good laptop cost 3x as much. A PC 2x as much or at least as much to upgrade a current one. Assuming you can even find what's in the PS3.

As for graphic, i have to agree it doesn't make the system popular. Rather it's the games and the gameplay features that attract players.
|
And the PS3 would still have the better Processor & GPU and questionably the better games....Final Fantasy anyone? It was the main reason I purchased the PS2 in the first place.

Well I hate to tell you but DVDs suck now...not really but they are not in HD. If you have to choose between $599 for a Blueray player + game system or $999 for a Blueray player which would you use? And even the HDDVD is $400+ if you go that route.

These are my opinions, and everyone can have their own, but its simply not worth it to pay that much for a console.

What it really means is those lame ass consoles are evolving into actual computers. Yes sometimes computers cost $3000 dollars. Why companies like Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft don't just release acutal computers is a mystery to me... Why should I have to wait 2 years to have Jade Empire. DAMN YOU XBOX!!!

That is not why Sony is doing this. They simply cannot eat all those cost in a large enough quantity to satisfy projected demand...and what happens if their projections are off. Basicly Sony needs all that money coming in from the early adoptors to make the next batch...

Manic Smile, nicely done there. I think Playstation 3 might regain the top of videogame kingdom after a while but they'll have competitions such as Nintendo Wii and the already popular Xbox360. Funny thing, i was looking on different forum board and see someone who actually said that the PS3 will have less exclusives titles than Xbox360. What's even funnier, the poster even created a long list of games that is exclusive for the xbox360 while listing little amount for the PS3.
Hope you can take lot of pictures of the PS3 and maybe hijack one.. lol
Btw, i'm still reading on the cell processor.... anyone know how much power the Cell processor is .. i mean what kind of speed does it run on?

You don't think it's innovative? Of course not, you're on the payroll, you drink the Kool-Aid. The Wii will change the way you play games. The PS3 is more of the same, with tacked-on motion control that isn't even reviewing well. And the graphic level on the GameCube is fine with me, I have no problems. I would be perfectly happy if the graphic level stayed the same for the rest of all time, so long as good game design is there. See below.

I wasn't stating that the Wii specifically would provide better gameplay than the PS3. Of course there will be killer games on both systems...and there will be PS3 exclusives I would love to play...but not for that price. Graphics are not the be-all, end-all. I don't care what the graphics look like. You can't make a crap game better by giving it awesome graphics. That goes for any console.

That's just it...I don't have to make that choice, because I don't want and don't need a Blueray player. I don't care about HD. I'm not in the market for any of that stuff and probably won't be for many, many more years. I'm perfectly happy in DVD Land.

I don't want a computer. Already have one. I want a console. That plays games, period. If I want to work on a spreadsheet, I'll go to my PC.
Not one thing you've said has made any difference to my future purchases. I'm still not convinced I will ever need or want a PS3 at the current price. But I'm willing to pay to be a part of the Revolution.
How much is Sony paying you for these posts?

What? Have you never heard of Super Smash Brothers? I'm not going to have anywhere near the amount of funds necessary to buy all the Wii games I need (yes, need, not want...need).

As long as we're looking at a 2d screen I could care less if there's a new controller, some funky laser gun or even some new pad. Personnaly I wish the PS3 controller would have just stayed the same as the PS2 and not wasted all that time and money that could have been spent in other places...like getting the PS3 out sooner and with more initial quantity. I mean really Dual Shock? That was what all the crap was over? Who cares? What I want is well made(writing/scripting), well displayed(good graphics for the time, I still love Fallout), games that imerse me into the play be it RPG, FPS or RTS. Perhaps I have a hang up when I play newer games that cost me 50+ dollars and look like stuff I can get for ~30 dollars now, and yes if the gameplay is otherwise good I'll take it anyway but why put out a lower end graphic system to beging with?

Fair enough but many are, and I think most people would be suprised with the quality difference, even if they wouldn't notice unless they had the images side by side.

And this is the very reason I have to play watered down games on my PC and wait for 2 years for games like Jade Empire to port. HELLO!! Your console IS A PC. It's a pretty crappy one with very little support but it's a PC. The emulators I run all the time to play everything pre PS2 proves it. You can even rig most game controllers into you computer and have both visual and the physical be the same...

That's fine. I wasn't trying to really convince anyone. I simply knew a bit about this, seeing as I talk about it constantly with friends/coworkers/customers and wanted to share.

People will always play what is FUN more.
Is looking at intense graphic fun? Or is it swinging that remote more fun? Or is it the story that matter?
I will be playing whatever that is more fun. I have both PS2 and GCN. I loved games like metal gear solid 3, but super smash bro melee is something I still play even today.
Oh... and I can't wait to try shooting game on wii... Metroid Prime is going to be a must get for me on Wii.
GCN had already satisfy my graphic need to an extend, which is already to a level that you can't make too much complain about. Wii has 2x-3x the power of GC, and that sounds like plenty enough graphic for me.
I heard alot of people are buying PS3 for the blueray player. With that price, you are talking about a cheap blueray player + a game system, which is actually a good trade; so I heard, as I am not familiar with blueray, not am I too into watching movie (whenever I watch movie, I always go "wtf is the guy thinking? he could have done this and that!" hence, I only watch a very few selected).
If blueray movie get popular really quick, PS3 might get boost a bit, however if high definition TV can't match... PS3 going to miss the shot. While if I was sony, I will make sure PS3 price will always be cheaper than buying a seperate console and blueray player; hoping yet not hoping blueray price drop too fast.
In my view, Sony's plan is too complicated this time. If something screw up, they will screw everything else up. A good strategy is a simple one (strategy that can be carried out with as little complication as possible).

Alot of peoples are saying that if the blue-ray format somehow lose it's popularity and become a failed format such as the UMD movies disc. Than we might see a decline in blue-ray movies made.
Funny how Sony tried to hyped up UMD but it still failed since watching movies on a 6-inch screen isn't that great.

I think the Big Company gaming consoles are going into uncharted territory and hoping people grab into it. While Nintendo are hoping to keep a group of gamers based on a "classic but innovative" approach.
Sony and to a lesser extent Microsoft are advertising and selling these systems not as "Gaming" rigs, but Multi-media devices that handle playing your videos - Your Music - and taking on functions of a computer. While Nintendo offers what, yes, is just a gaming machine that doesnt have the LEETSUACE PWNZOR SPECS that the others have, but it is promising a classic gaming experience with new and exciting ways of playing without making the box a gaming machine/music player/Movie player/Computer/Toaster/Bread Slicer that the others are going into.
Sony is hoping to bring in alot more of its favorite demographic, the 18-25 dipstick that lives with his parents and works part time to blow all the money on games and rims for his 10 yr old car, and they are probably going to succeed there and make alot of money as that time comes, at the small expense of alienating and leaving behind all the other fans of the system.

Imagine if PC system has this much hype as their console rival and not only that but with wide variety of games available. Most of the PC games out there are either RTS genre or FPS. I wonder if it's easier to create game for PC instead doing on the console systems.
