Default Hey Anime fans

I'd like your recommendations. I'm sort of an anime noob so I'm not up to date on what's worth watching but I really do like series like Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Afro Samurai. I don't really like "kiddyish" stuff like Naruto (No offense) and would prefer more grown up oriented stuff.

But I'm not really too picky so give me some recommendations and maybe a line or two of what the basic gist of it is. Thanks in advance.

The only real anime's I've really lked were Rurouni Kenshin, and FullMetal Alchemist, both are regarded as more mature.

Dragonball Z was so-so, it was just annoying how it could take 5 episodes to have the bad guy get a scratch on his left thumb.

Reasons why I like Kenshin?
It's about a legendary assassin who has sworn to never kill again after he has fulfilled his goal; after 10 years of wandering, he decides to settle in a small dojo where he makes some friends for the first time in his life. The first episodes of the first series are more of an introduction to the main protagonists, and the latter episodes are even fillers, all more of a happy-happy-joy-joy affair.

But the second series really gets interesting. The 'successor' of Kenshin is trying to take down the government, and the government itself is asking Kenshin to stop before the country finds itself again in a state of chaos.
From that point on, it's action and flashbacks to give antagonists a background.
The main problem is not the other assassins trying to kill Kenshin, but himself: he had vowed to never kill a human creature again (he uses a reverse blade sword), and the tougher the fight gets, the more he reverts to his 'manslayer' state.
So he's constantly fighting to not change back to the murderer he once was.
Quite alot of gore as well, yet nothing really extreme.

FullMetal Alchemist is a bit more humorous, but I enjoyed seeing the few episodes I managed to catch. 2 brothers who can use Alchemy to change the form and substance of stuff they touch, and their eventual goal is the Philosopher's Stone, which should be able to give their bodies back (one lost his body, so his soul is trapped in an old armor, the other one had lost his arm and leg; they tried to resurrect their dead mother using alchemy and utterly failed)

Not really a line or 2, but I like to be (more-or-less) complete

You should check out both the first and second series of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. They both follow a futuristic anti-terror sorta group and are pretty cool.

if its Samurai anime your after then Bleach is one of the best . Also Naruto isn't for kids there's blood and violence in it , swearing and let's not forget good old perverted Japanese humor. There's a reason its the best anime around
Also Full Metal Alchemist and Wolf's Rain are great animes too.

Naruto dubbed (anime with english voices) = for kids
Naruto subbed (anime with english subtitles and japanese voices) = for most age groups.

Some good animes.. hmm

Shakugan no shana.
One peice (subtitled, NOT i repeat NOT the fricken dubbed version.. damn 4kids..)
Death note. Very spooky clever type of anime. watch it. you won't regret it.
Neon genesis evangelion. you'll like it.
The samurai x OVA's: (rurouni kenshins full story apart from the anime series )
Hellsing (very good and gorey, funny also, try and watch the OVA's as well)

I have more but.. well i dunno if you'd like them or not.

Black Lagoon is also pretty good.
Trinity Blood
Do not forget about Outlaw Star... It is Classic.

Theres also Ergo Proxy which is pretty good. (currently being released ~slowly~ on dvd in the United States. Not sure how the dubbing is so just go with the subtitled.)

I forgot to mention an anime that I've gotten into lately. Hajime no Ippo (Fighting Spirit in English) is pretty good. It's about boxing and it doesn't get too unrealistic so I find it cool to watch. I'd have to say its a bit hit or miss as to whether or not you'll like it though.

Since you seem to like Sunrise Studios, I'd suggest Vision of Escaflowne (the series, NOT the movie). It's old, but classic and well done. It's a fusion between fantasy and mecha with plenty of swordfighting.

Togashi Yoshihiro's stuff, i.e. Yu Yu Hakusho & Hunter X Hunter, is fairly good if you like a lot of fighting. If you want to watch Hunter X Hunter, the order to watch is: Hunter X Hunter general series (eps 1-62), OVA 1, OVA 2, Greed Island OVA, Greed Island OVA Final. The storylines *are* continuous, so you'll probably get confused if you watch them out of order. For more simplicity, just read the manga, there's only 1. :P

Juuni Kokki (Chronicles of 12 Kingdoms) is very good, although I'm not sure if you'll like it. It has a lot to do with character development although it does have lots of fighting and wars.

Note about Rurouni Kenshin: one of the major problems with this anime is the fact that (in Japanese) Kenshin's voice actor is a woman, and it's VERY VERY OBVIOUS. Yes, there are reasons why his voice should be slightly feminine, but they overdid it. You could try watching this in English, but dubbing always has its own set of problems, in this case, their tendency to say "reverse-blade samurai sword" every other sentence because they can't think up a shorter way to refer to it. If you want to fully appreciate Kenshin, go read the manga.

Elfen Lied. It's about a chick who can like...cut people in half with her mind. Lots of blood and some nudity. But the real reason it's for adults is because it deals with a lot of adult themes like child abuse, sin & forgivness, and wether society can be blamed for a persons crimes or not. This is IMO the best anime of all time.

Gunslinger Girl. Not many people have seen this one, but almost everyone who does, likes it. It's an espionage drama, kinda like Alias, Le Femme Nikita, or Leon the professional. It's about a division of the italian govornment that is using little girls for espionage work. It is very serious and somber themed, with realistic action.

I am 35, and those are the two most adult themed anime that I can remember seeing. Some other ones that I really liked were...

Full Metal Panic, and the spin off series Fumuffu.
Hellsing
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Gantz
Gilgamesh
