I am just getting old?
I remember when I was growing up...attending high school, my dad would have comments about the music was listening to. "what the hell are you listening to??? This aint rock music, this aint even music!" Naturally, I shrugged him off. But now, over the past few years, i have noticed a steady decline in the quality of today's music. To me, it's 95% crap that they play on the radio. The 5% of good stuff is when they play yesteryears music that I was accustomed to.
So my question... is it that I'm just being like my father and am just accustomed to the music I grew up to or is todays music just that sh!tty?

Partly it is that hearing the music you enjoyed as a teen provides a comfort zone. I even prefer listening to the Beatles (whom I never liked) than to today's popular music.
And partly it's the fact that there are no musicians anymore, just chanters. Do you realize that all decent bands are at least in their 50s. No one came along to replace them.
We have some new decent singers, but no musicians.

I'd say it's a combination of both, today's music is mostly just downright bad.

Well, a lot of today's music is really really really bad. But it all depends where you're getting the music from. I live in Australia, and there's basically three major radio stations. Triple J plays all the good rock and Alt rock type stuff, only occasionally going into the hip hop and rap genres. B105 plays mostly pop and hip hop. Then there's 97.3, which plays pop, hip hop, and that crappy form of techno where it's just a bit of bass played over and over.
To be honest, some of my favourite bands are very recent ones... Eskimo Joe, Snow Patrol, Muse, the Killers, Kaiser Chiefs. Bands like that are just great. I recommend anyone into the rock/alt rock genres who have not heard these bands to check them out. And if you don't like them, that's okay. I like them, so I'm gonna spread the word. You've also got your old classics, like Smashing Pumpkins, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc.
I mostly listen to the music for the lyrics. I'm a vocalist kind of guy. Snow Patrol has some of the best lyrics I have ever heard. There's something about some of the new bands that the old ones just don't compare to in this respect. Old bands have good lyrics, yes, but there's something different... Something less sophisticated and thought out about them.
So anyway, I apologise for this long post. It's 12:21 AM, and I've only had nine hours sleep in the past three days, and I always like writing when I'm tired. But the point I was trying to make is, don't feel old if you don't like the "popular" music of today. You'll actually find that most of the music that is considered popular isn't really that popular at all. I mean, I have never spoken to anyone who has liked Britney Spears, but she's still considered popular. Listen to the stuff you like, and try and find some newer stuff of the same genre, and you'll probably soon be surprised to find you've got a new favourite band.

There are good new songs out there for any taste, its just that if you listen to the radio you hear a lot of stuff you dont like because of how the radio works anymore.
I'm just lucky that I live near Chicago and get a good choice of stations to listen to.

Radio = crap music IMO as well..... same with most of MTV and such.... I live near Houston, and there's maybe 1 station that is good, the rest I constantly flip thru trying to catch the one or two good songs that play. I talk with alot of musicians and go to alot of shows, and yeah, there is still alot of good new music, just that most of the "mainstream" stuff is lousy. I agree Fallout Boy is rubbish, but guess it's personal opinion.
I still listen to music that drives my parents crazy.... hardcore FTW! But I've also always (even when really young) been one to like a huge array of music. I can go from chilling to some Norah Jones to listening to Underoath or heavier music.

No, I'm 18 and I hate half the crap I hear on the radio now-a-days. I am stuck in time with music I listened to 3 years ago. Occasionally a new song will come out that i enjoy, but its rare.

I like pretty much any sort of music except for emo and metal( they both sound pretty much the same to me), but I'd go for dance above anything else. And to the OP; music isn't any better or worse than it was ten or twenty years ago, people will just generally go for the sort of music they grew up with.

Rock and Roll from the years of 1950-1979 are what I listen to, some lucky songs from the 80's make my list, but most of the 80's was hair metal, a truly sad moment in musical history.

todays punk and emo music is all the same. its these kids singing about how their life sucks, their trouble in relationships, and how they are fighting through troubles when they are actually (most of them) overpriveledged and rich off their keesters. same with rap, i like old rap like public enemy and tupac cause they actually had a message to tell, unlike todays rap about making money and going to strip clubs. so i just listen to 70's and 80's rock and rap, cause the old stuff is the most genuine (im only 15)
