gears of war: the movie
With games being a prime target of film studio execs for source material, it was only a matter of time before Epic Games' Xbox 360 hit Gears of War began its walk down the road to becoming a movie.
Variety is reporting today that New Line Cinema has acquired the movie rights to Gears of War. Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey will produce the film, which is being written by Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Collateral). No more details of the movie have been released, including crew and release date.
Gears of War, published by Microsoft Game Studios, has won several Game of the Year awards since its release last November. As of mid-January, the game had sold more than 3 million units worldwide.
The next task for the film is to actually get made. Several high-profile movies based on games are still in limbo but slowly moving forward, with Sony working on bringing Metal Gear Solid to the big screen, Jerry Bruckheimer bringing his brand of action to Prince of Persia, and Warner Bros. affiliate Legendary Pictures working on a World of Warcraft movie. Others, such as the big-budget endeavor to bring Halo to the cineplex, have stalled completely.
[UPDATE] Since the announcement, GameSpot has confirmed the report with Epic Games vice president Mark Rein and more details have surfaced. New Line is targeting a summer 2009 release for the game, and Variety predicts that a Gears of War sequel will be timed with the release of the movie.

Sigh I hope this movie doesn't ruin the game. I have been playing Gears now for about 2 months and I love the game. Just recently picked it up myself for my brand new 360. It is an amazing game, graphics are great and the storyline is well done. Unfortunetly movies that are made after video games seem to fail horribly and sometimes even ruin the games. If the movie keeps to the story line of GoW then I will defiantly have to go check it out. Hopefully more information will be released soon.

I already said the same thing on Hellgate guru, but they need to stop making all these video game/comic book movies. Has American society degraded so much we can no longer think up original ideas for movies?

I also heard that God of War is getting a movie deal too and the script is already finished. As for Gears of War, I played the game. If I had Xbox360, I would get this game in a heart-beat.

I heard about that and I am not to sure if it will be intresting or not as Gear of War is a total shoot'em up kinda game I dont get how they can make a plot for that any good. Hal o is not more deserving then Gears btw because if you havent noticed Gears of War has been one of the best sellings games for 360 and is a main reason why Halo 3 does not have a release date, they want people to get a little bored of Gears before they release another game. In other words they are seeing how much money they can juice out of gears since it is a awsome game before they release halo 3.

Umm isn't Halo 3 being released on November 17 of this year? I pretty sure that is what i saw. Either way if they make a Gears movie it better follow the game closely.

its one of the best selling games for the 360 because most of the other games suck, its really that simple. not saying gears is bad game but it doesn't have much cometition.

Depending on what kind of games you like is what decides if the games suck or not. If you like FPS's then the XBox is probably for you. I got mine just for the FPS's. Gears, Halo, Rainbow Six Vegas, all are great FPS's and are very popular. There are plenty of other popular games on the XBox but they just don't have the sucess that Halo and Gears are having. This doesn't mean all the games suck. People enjoy different types of games, just because one type of game is more dominant then the other doesn't mean that all the other games suck.
